* DrowningMySorrows: Implied when he first shows up drunk to meet his would-be-protectors, still guzzling down a bottle of alcohol. Given that he was half expecting Gatō's assassins to come and murder him before reaching Konoha, let alone that previously-stated bodyguards wouldn't be up to the task, plus remembering how Kaiza was executed for his resistance, one can't entirely blame him.
* ExpectingSomeoneTaller: At first, he isn't impressed upon meeting Team 7, seeing that most of his bodyguards are fresh-faced genin barely out of the academy. Plus he singles out Naruto for being the shortest of the three, quickly getting them both off on the wrong foot. He quickly changes his mind after seeing Naruto and Sasuke stand up to Zabuza.

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He may pick on Naruto and lie about missions, but he's a genuinely good guy just trying to help his country.
* ManipulativeBastard: After his deception is revealed, he has no qualms using the thought of his family mourning his death to emotionally manipulate Team 7 into protecting him.

* ManipulativeBastard: After his deception is revealed, he has no qualms using the thought of his family mourning his death to emotionally manipulate Team 7 into protecting him. [[PlayedForLaughs He muses to himself that he won after it works.]] Though judging from what Kakashi mentions to him later about Konoha's sense of justice, it is likely they would've continued the mission regardless.

* TookALevelInKindness: To begin with, he was harsh towards Naruto in particular due to the latter's overexcitement and reckless use of ninja tools, but his views begin to soften once he sees the kid stand his ground against Zabuza despite being physically outclassed.

* {{Bowlderize}}: Her threatening to bite off her tongue was changed to "doing anything" for Gatō's bodyguards if they leave Inari alone in the dub (even the uncut version).

* ReusedCharacterDesign: A pair of Kirigakure shinobi resembling these two can be seen in Guy's taijutsu team during the Fourth Shinobi World War. Earlier, someone with Waraji's design can be seen standing behind Tenzen Daikoku in a flashback that shows the crime boss taking Zabuza's Executioner's Blade. Whether it's meant to be Waraji or not is unknown since he didn't appear with his partner in that episode.

Added DiffLines:

* ArrogantKungFuGuy: Shigure is noted in the databooks to be arrogant and presumptuous. Given his performance against Gaara, that would be pretty accurate.
* [[AssholeVictim Asshole Victims]]: Gaara's killing of Team Shigure was horrifying and a little over the top, but given how jerkish they seemed to be (made more clear in the databook), it is doubtful anyone shed tears for them.

Added DiffLines:

* GoodScarsEvilScars: Shigure has two of the right of his face, blinding him in that eye.

Added DiffLines:

* {{Jerkass}}: Midare is noted to be a spiteful and selfish S.O.B. in the databook, but then again, his teammates don't appear to be much better. Team Oboro is pretty spiteful themselves, as they all relish the pain they inflict on Team 7 and Kabuto a little too much. They're very eager to get another shot during the Land of Tea filler.
* KnowWhenToFoldEm: Baiu (Midare in the anime) quickly surrenders their scroll to the Sand Siblings after Shigure is brutally killed and begs them to let them go. Gaara doesn't care and proceeds to murder the two anyway for "looking at him the wrong way" in the same manner as their leader...[[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking and Kankurō claims the scroll after the fact.]]

Added DiffLines:

* PintSizedPowerhouse: Baiu is a taijutsu specialist despite his tiny frame. [[InformedAbiliy Not that we see]] [[AllThereInTheManual him demonstrate it.]]

Added DiffLines:

* TheStrategist: Midare is said to be the brains of Team Shigure...according to the databook.

Added DiffLines:

* SmugSnake: Both teams show shades of it, especially Team Shigure who act pompous and arrogant towards Gaara at first before the Sand jinchuuriki shows them just how out of their league they are. Baiu and Midare beg Gaara to spare them in exchange for their earth scroll but their pleas fall on death ears before they are killed horribly and bloodily.

Added DiffLines:

* UngratefulBastard: Baiu is stated to be one in the databook.

Ajisai only appeared as a nameless corpse in the Manga, but her character and role are vastly expanded upon in the anime during the Second Chunin Exam Arc, where Konan trusts her enough to not only send her and her team to the Chunin exams to gather intel on the various foreign shinobi and any potential Jinchuriki, but also capture the Jinchuriki if possible. Additionally, Konan trusts her to complete an S-rank mission right upon promotion. Ajisai herself seems to fully believe in Pain’s [[MiseryBuildsCharacter doctrines]] and seeks to bring peace to the world through [[WellIntentionedExtremist exposing the larger villages to the pain the smaller ones feel]]. She is shown to be both determined, opportunistic (wanting to capture a giant ant to be her summon) and proud, refusing to even accept water from a foreign ninja while they were in a desert.

* PoorCommunicationKills: Justified and lampshaded. Kakashi says that by lying about the nature of the mission he gave them, he risked the lives of the whole team. Tazuna responds by pointing out that he had to say it was a "C" rank mission, because the Land of Waves was so poverty-stricken that he couldn't afford to pay the "A" rank fee.

* AscendedExtra: He's merely a one-note bully in the manga who only appears in a flashback to help establish how Inari and Kaiza met. The Konoha History arc shows that he continued to pick on Inari for a while afterward until a kidnapping incident with some of Gatō's former bodyguards caused him to see the errors of his ways. He and Inari are now friends and fellow carpenters working on restoring Konoha after the Invasion of Pain.

Adaptation Expansion is for when the story itself is extended. Use this trope for characters who get more screentime in the adaptation. Use All There In The Script instead of All There In The Manual when names are revealed in other material than the story proper.

* AdaptationExpansion: They are quickly beaten and tied up by Naruto in the manga and are then forgotten about, likely being arrested like the Demon Brothers or kicked out with the rest of Gatō's men. The History of Konoha filler shows in a flashback that they escaped and tried to cash in on Gatō's death by holding Inari ransom for Tazuna, only to be taken out by Naruto and Sasuke who were about to leave the land only to backtrack once Naruto found he was missing an Ichiraku coupon, [[SpannerInTheWorks of all things.]]
** In the present during Hebi's formation, Zōri appears briefly without Waraji and bumps into Sasuke and Suigetsu while they're looking for Zabuza's blade, the samurai letting them know that it has fallen into the hands of a crime boss with a grudge against the fallen Mist Swordsman.

* AllThereInTheManual: Their names are only shown in character boxes in the manga and are never said otherwise. The anime only shows them in the Japanese credits which most casual English-speaking fans would miss.

A pair of samurai bodyguards employed by Gatō. Zōri is calm and usually rational whereas Waraji is sadistic and eager to cut up everyone and anything in his way. While Team 7 is fighting Zabuza and Haku, Gatō sends these two to kidnap Tsunami, Tazuna's daughter, and use her as leverage against the bridge builder. They let Inari go at first, but the boy regains his courage just in time for Naruto to return and dispatch the samurai, leaving them tied up to be arrested later.

They let Inari go at first, but the boy regains his courage just in time for Naruto to return and dispatch the samurai, leaving them tied up to be arrested later. In the anime, they escaped briefly and took Inari, Akane, and two other kids hostage for ransom, but Akane's gang escaped and informed Naruto and Sasuke who wasted no time in tracking them down and defeating the thugs once more.

Later in the anime, Zōri appears on his own during the start of Sasuke's assembling of Hebi, where the Uchiha and Suigetsu pump him for information on the whereabouts of Zabuza's Kubikiribōchō.

* AllMenArePerverts: In the English dub, [[WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids even the edited version,]] due to Tsunami's tongue threat being removed, Waraji's line about wanting to cut her skin was replaced with him promising to [[RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil "treat her real good",]] which is arguably ''worse'' than the Japanese text.

* AxCrazy: Waraji, as noted below, is all too eager to cut up animals to blow off some steam and even tried to do so to Inari before Tsunami threatened to kill herself. As he and Zōri are taking her outside, the brute muses that he wants to cut her fine skin a little to see her bleed. Brr...!

* CurbStompBattle: On the receiving end from Naruto when they attempt to kill him and Inari. A sneak attack from a pair of Shadow Clones puts them down for the count.

* WouldHurtAChild: Waraji wants to kill Inari upon the boy making himself known, only to be talked out of it by Tsunami who threatens to bite her tongue if her son is harmed. This gets him and Zōri to back off, but all bets are off when the boy regains his spine and charges the two, at which they knock out Tsunami and would've killed Inari if not for [[BigDamnHeroes Naruto's arrival.]] They later still, in the anime, kidnap Inari and Akane's gang to hold them for ransom in exchange for a large sum and would have clearly killed the boys had Akane and his cronies not escaped and told Naruto and Sasuke about the incident.
