Despite being given far more freedom to think and act independently of his new creator, Geras ''chooses'' to follow Liu Kang's designs because he genuinely believes in them.
* AdaptationalNiceGuy: Geras in ''11'' was a ruthless, loyal, implacable servant of the Keeper of Time. Here he's a willing ally of Liu Kang with the latter considering him a friend. Geras shows himself to be surprisingly concerned for Liu Kang by [[spoiler:storing Liu Kang's Keeper of Time powers in a safe location without telling him so he might not feel pressured to abandon his role as protector of Earthrealm, which Geras sees Liu Kang enjoys. Liu Kang points out that Geras could have at any time made himself the Keeper of Time, but Geras replies he believes in Liu Kang's design for the timeline and thus never felt the temptation.
