* NotSoDifferent: Hatchin comments that Michiko is just like Pepe Lima. However, Michiko later disagrees heavily to Pepe about that resemblance, Michiko citing their key difference as being that Michiko will never give up on her friends while Pepe feels that she can't rely on anyone. Ironically, when Pepe asks Michiko to help her look for [[spoiler:Lulu, Michiko refuses, letting Pepe go to her death, before cursing herself for not helping the woman in need]].

* MementoMacGuffin: Hatchin's tattoo on her stomach, which is the same as Michiko's.

* AwwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther: In the finale, [[spoiler: after Michiko leaves Hatchin with Hiroshi and goes off to complete her prison time lawfully, Hatchin breaks down in tears, screaming for Michiko to come back.]] Despite all her irritation with her often immature and thoughtless mother-figure, Hatchin has truly grown to love her and doesn't want to be without her.

* AngryCollarGrab: Does this with Elis after finding out [[spoiler: Hiroshi had been sleeping with her.]]
* BadassBiker: In a world where the [[DirtyCop the police tend to be crooked]] and [[WretchedHive most towns are ruled by the cartel]], it is according that the heroine would be able to save the day on her scooter. Michiko even kicks off the series by pulling Hatchin out of her [[OrphanageOfFear hellish foster family]] by crashing through the window with her damn scooter. As the series goes on, it's shown that this isn't a one-time thing as Michiko continues to take out mobsters, high-end hitmen, and dirty cops with the tricks she can pull on her scooter.
* BarehandedBladeBlock: In the bullfight episode.

* BikerBabe: Michiko is this with a scooter.
* BookDumb: She's not really sharp when it comes to doubting fantasy stuff, struggles with simple subtraction and judging by a note she wrote to her former caretaker, never learned to properly read and write. All that being said, Michiko is a highly tactical fighter who can swiftly take out a squad of armed officers without a weapon.

* CombatStilettos: Even high heels don't stop her from being a KickChick!

* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Immature and flighty? Yes. A badass who can take a massive amount of punishment and still kick ass? Yes.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Raised in an orphanage by an abusive caretaker. Got involved in organized crime and was sent to jail after having a child young, with a man who's no longer around.

** When trying to save Hatchin from a corrupt circus which sells children into slavery, Michiko pursues them even as they attempt to escape in a hot air balloon in a coastal rainstorm. Michiko is so devoted to getting Hatchin back that she climbs the rope in the storm, shrugging off multiple tranquilizer bullets and still refusing to let go. It's not until Hatchin has subdued her kidnappers that Michiko finally lets go.
** This woman is really hard to kill, and she even nearly fell off from the end of an iron beam multiple stories high by being completely bound and tied to Nei Feng-Yi. She hangs onto the edge of the beam and uses her ''teeth'' to hold him from falling down to his death. Even the guys who had kidnapped her were utterly speechless when she managed to pull Nei back in time.
* DudeMagnet: Many men have noted Michiko on her good looks; she's frequently hit on, often in the middle of her trying to accomplish something else. Sometimes she enjoys the attention and other times seems annoyed she's being bothered.
* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: The first time they meet, Elis gives Michiko [[TheBigDamnKiss a huge kiss]] and gropes her. There's also the [[AmbiguouslyGay implications]] that Atsuko has romantic feelings for her.
* EveryoneHasStandards: In spite of her negative traits, she's ''pissed'' when Hatchin's foster father tries to murder his foster daughter just to get the money from her death.
* GroinAttack: Used rather liberally by Michiko whenever male law officials are taking her on (i.e. pretty much every officer in the show who's not Atsuko). She only tends to use it as a [[CombatPragmatist pragmatic defense tactic]], [[TruthInTelevision which it is]], rather than just to be malicious.
* HairContrastDuo: The rebellious ne'er do-well Michiko has dark hair, while her law-abiding, MoralityPet daughter Hatchin has dirty blonde hair.
* HairTriggerTemper: Not only is Michiko ready to throw punches and yell at people over the slightest upset, it's anyone's guess what will set her off on any given day.
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: Despite several clues that [[spoiler: Hiroshi is not the thoughtful and good person she thinks he is, Michiko still believes he's still in love with her]]. Most of the other characters see right through him.
* HotBlooded: Michiko takes a very impulsive approach to just about everything she does. Before knowing anything about Hatchin's foster family she decides the best way to enter would be by crashing her scooter through the window.
* {{Hypocrite}}: Michiko goes into a ballistic rage when she finds out the Hiroshi had been in a relationship with Elis, but tried to justify her having an affair with a married man.

* ItsAllAboutMe: She is accused by several side characters that she is only taking Hatchin with her as a device to get close to Hiroshi, which she angrily denies. Eventually, she accepts that part of her wants to be with Hiroshi but that she is also reuniting the daughter and father for the girl's sake. In the finale, she subverts this and [[spoiler:goes back to prison, letting Hiroshi and Hatchin fly off to their new life together]].

* MamaBear: In spite of her frequent anger outbursts at Hatchin, Michiko genuinely cares for the young girl and will do ''anything'' to ensure her safety. In the finale, when the duo are faced down with an squad of armed officers, she [[spoiler:decimates the enemy with nothing but her body to defend Hatchin, as soon as the threat of bringing harm to her young companion is brought up]].

* MissingMom: It's somewhat hinted that Michiko is Hana's missing mother, with Michiko actually referring to her as her daughter when she goes to get her from her foster family but this is never brought up again and ultimately, [[spoiler:the truth about Hana's mother never comes to light]].

* MsFanservice: She's tall, thin, and curvy. Even with an UnlimitedWardrobe, her outfits often bare her [[AbsoluteCleavage cleavage]], [[BareYourMidriff naval]] and [[ShesGotLegs legs]], or [[{{Stripperiffic}} barely cover her butt]]. There are even scenes of her shirtless.

* ParentsAsPeople: Michiko is now taking care of child and she still lacks emotional maturity, as well as being selfish and reckless because that's how she always was.

* PinkySwear: Offers one to Hatchin in the last episode to [[spoiler: promise her surrendering herself to the cops isn't goodbye forever.]]

* SpicyLatina: Michiko takes the roll of the [[MsFanservice sexy]] Latina character with a [[HotBlooded headstrong, impulsive attitude]] and a [[{{Tsundere}} tough-seeming but ultimately sweet]] lady in this series. This can be seen from the [[{{Stripperific}} outfits she wears]], the amount of ass she kicks and the [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold way she treats Hatchin]].

* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: Because of [[spoiler: Michiko's actions against Fantasma]], Satoshi was able to launch his assault on Monstro Preto, eventually taking control and becoming the BigBad.

* WomanChild: Michiko's childish ways of handling things is one of the main reasons she and Hatchin don't initially get along. Her behavior throughout the series often leaves Hatchin in the lurch, and resentful that her mother-figure doesn't do a better job taking care of her. By the end of the series, she's matured somewhat, even [[spoiler: willingly going back to finish her prison sentence once she believes Hatchin is safe under Hiroshi's care.]]

A young nine-year old girl whose living conditions are a true OrphanageOfFear until her life changes (for better or worse) once Michiko comes into the picture. Her father is Hiroshi Morenos; a thief whom Michiko apparently dated and was loyal to.

* AmazinglyEmbarrassingParents: Often feels this way about Michiko, especially when Michiko is being particularly crass, ditzy, or when she's talking about sex and romance.

* BadassAdorable: At least after being taken by Michiko, Hatchin is a pretty good example. While she can often be overshadowed by Michiko in terms of badassness, Hatchin is nothing to sneeze at. Case in point, she knocked two adults unconscious by kicking the fat Michiko lady on her face.

* BornUnlucky: A hell lot of bad things happen to her, even outside her foster home. She gets injured, emotionally scarred, conned, threatened with death, almost sold through child slavery, mistreated by adults with rotten personalities, kidnapped, yelled at and slapped by Michiko on one of her many bad days, left at a car repair shop to [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking massage an old man's back]]...

* BrokenPedestal: Done rather subtly, but over the course of the series, Hatchin goes from having a desire to meet her father to slowly losing all interest as she starts to put the pieces together over what type of man he really is. She ends up becoming confused why both Michiko ''and'' later Satoshi [[WhatDoesSheSeeInHim hold him in such high regard]]. And by the end, after finally being reunited with Hiroshi, she's more devastated that it came at the price of [[spoiler: Michiko getting sent back to jail]].

* TheCynic: Doesn't really believe in tales like the Virgin Mary statue crying blood, or the claims of the fortune-teller Michiko employs in episode 3.

* EmbarrassingFirstName: She doesn't like being called Hana.

* ExtremeDoormat: Hana to her abusive foster family.
* {{Foil}}: The youthful, mature, realistic Hatchin is in direct contrast with her childish, feckless adult mother.

* IChooseToStay: She wanted to live her life with the Circus de Chocolate, until the point where she realized her superiors wanted to sell the talent-less circus children for money.
* IAmNotMyFather: Unlike Hiroshi, [[spoiler: who vanishes out of Hatchin's life again a few months after their reunion, Hatchin is determined to be a good mother to [[DistantFinale her son]].]]

* LadyLooksLikeADude: Is mistaken for a boy by several characters throughout the series due to her androgynous appearance once she cuts off her pigtails and ditches her dress.

* LittleMissBadass: Hatchin evolves over the story into a more mundane than average version of this. At one point near the climax, she faced off with a [[GangBangers former gang lord]]; throwing ''rocks'' at the guy with a high-powered handgun.

* OrphanageOfFear: ''Everyone'' in her foster family was a huge a-hole to her.

* ShorterMeansSmarter: the short, child-aged Hatchin is considerably more rational and observant than the hot-headed, impulsive Michiko, who is a tall adult.

* TheyReallyDoLoveEachOther: In the finale, [[spoiler: after Michiko leaves Hatchin with Hiroshi and goes off to complete her prison time lawfully, Hatchin breaks down in tears, screaming for Michiko to come back.]] Despite all her irritation with her often immature and thoughtless mother-figure, Hatchin has truly grown to love her and doesn't want to be without her.

* SympatheticInspectorAntagonist: For the most part, Atsuko's just trying to do her job--and Michiko's been on these escapes before. She knows her quarry well and that helps her in figuring out Michiko's logic. She even [[spoiler:allows Michiko to go free in one instance, in order for Michiko to rescue Hatchin from Satoshi.]]

* DisappearedDad: Believed to have died in a truck explosion accident, but Michiko thinks otherwise.
* {{Flashback}}: He appears only in flashbacks [[spoiler:until the end of the series.]]
* GangBangers: Was Satoshi's second-in-command for an unspecified amount of time before quitting the gang--directly after which Satoshi sent him on a fool's errand and he, ''shockingly'' ended up dead by bus explosion.
* JerkWithAHeartOfJerk: Lots of people have lots of good things to say about Hiroshi throughout the course of the series, and [[spoiler:when we finally see him in the last episode, he claims to be enthusiastic about taking care of Hatchin after Michiko leaves her in his custody. He runs off with another woman soon after and leaves his daughter to fend for herself.]]

A former friend of Hiroshi who took over his crime syndicate Monstro Preto.

* AsskickingEqualsAuthority: Satoshi got to be where he is now by ruthlessly removing any obstacle to him taking power. Shinsuke learns this the hard way when he brings a group of {{Mooks}} to kill Satoshi, whose combat abilities allow him to [[spoiler:decimate Shinsuke's forces and easily execute]] his former subordinate.

* HeroicSacrifice / RedemptionEqualsDeath: [[spoiler: Possibly. During his final confrontation with Juninho's gang, he jumps in front of Hatchin just in time to take a bullet for her, but the chaos of the scene makes it difficult to determine whether this is intentional.]]
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: Satoshi as well as Michiko is guilty of this concerning [[spoiler:Hiroshi]]. Even Hatchin, [[spoiler:who's never met Hiroshi up to that point, is able to get his personality better than his former best friend]].
* KarmicDeath: [[spoiler:Gets tortured and killed by a mobster that he previous tormented but gave CruelMercy. This is similar to the cycle he previously had with Manabe.]]

* NotSoDifferent: For all his talks of despising Michiko and wanting to kill her, he acts a lot like her. [[spoiler:During the brief period he kidnaps Hatchin, their dynamic is very similar to how antagonistic Hatchin's dynamic used to be with Michiko. He even remembers Hiroshi fondly just like Michiko does and treats Hatchin like a ReplacementGoldfish.]]
* PayEvilUntoEvil: He pays back Manabe, who brutally mistreated him as a child, by doing the exact same things to him as an adult. However, while he had some right to pay back to Manabe, Satoshi goes the extra mile and ''murders'' his innocent family.
* PetTheDog: As monstrous as he may be, [[spoiler:he could have treated Hatchin a ''lot'' worse than he did during the brief time they were together. Even when she refuses to tell him where Hiroshi is]], he doesn't even get upset.

* SlasherSmile: Satoshi sports one.
* TookALevelInBadass: Flashbacks reveal that this extremely dangerous, ruthless, and cunning man was once a scared, all-talk-no-bark thug.
* VomitIndiscretionShot: Major one in episode 19 after his drink was spiked with an unknown drug.

* WouldHurtAChild: He murdered Manabe's young son but he didn't hurt Hatchin, only held her hostage.

* PsychoForHire: Shinsuke enjoys hurting people.

* FourEyesZeroSoul: All of them are nasty, awful people who wears glasses.

* KickTheDog: All of them do petty, spiteful things to Hatchin just because they want to. Maria steals Hatchin's clothes while she's in the shower and then cuts off the water, sprays her with cleaning fluid, and kicks her down the stairs, while Gabriel taunts and throws things at her regularly. Once Michiko has abducted Hatchin, and Pedro realizes he's going to lose her child support, he decides to [[spoiler: collect on her life insurance and ''tries to shoot her''.]]

Pepe is an exotic dancer. Lulu is her younger sister, whom Pepe cares deeply for and strives to protect. Pepe does everything she can to take them both out of poverty--including getting Lulu to steal Michiko's ID so they can afford to leave town. When this fails, Pepe desperately attempts to steal money from her boss...

And when a bartender reveals drugs are being sold on Monstro's turf by someone else, Satoshi abruptly smashes he is mug, mutilates the man's face, and shoots him dead after interrogating him.

* HookerWithAHeartOfGold: More specifically, Pepe's a stripper with a HiddenHeartOfGold.

* InelegantBlubbering: Played for drama[[spoiler:after Hatchin is kidnapped by Satoshi, Atsuko breaks down in tears once her feelings for Michiko reach a boiling point when she, for the last time, lets Michiko escape to pursue Satoshi.]]

She is deeply in love with Hiroshi who she claims a "good man"; the man she started the brief affair appeared to be genuinely concerned with her. [[spoiler:However, the ending reveals Hiroshi is a JerkWithAHeartOfJerk]], while the man she started a brief affair with also turned out to be a jerk. In other words, while Michiko wants a good man, she has bad luck in finding them.

* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Zigzagged. She's the gun-toting, punching, vulgar tomboy who often wears feminine clothing to Hatchin's quiet, polite, cooking girly girl who often wears boyish clothing.
* TookALevelInKindness: She grows to genuinely care for Hatchin. Case in point, [[spoiler:she willingly goes back to jail and have Hiroshi take care of Hatchin. And ''after'' spending her full sentence, she sends a message to a grown up Hatchin about where to meet her.]]

* WomanChild: {{Deconstructed|Trope}}. Michiko's childish ways of handling things is one of the main reasons she and Hatchin don't initially get along. Her behavior throughout the series often leaves Hatchin in the lurch, and resentful that her mother-figure doesn't do a better job taking care of her.

There's also the question of whether or not the dates of Hatchin's birth and Michiko's prison time match up to allow that Michiko ''could'' be her mother.

* StrongFamilyResemblance: After she cuts her pigtails, she greatly resembled Hiroshi in his youth, except he had a more boyish nose.

* WackyParentSeriousChild: The Serious Child to Michiko's Wacky Parent.

* KickTheDog: All of them do petty, spiteful things to Hatchin just because they want to. Maria steals Hatchin's clothes while she's in the shower and then cuts off the water, sprays her with cleaning fluid, and kicks her down the stairs, while Gabriel taunts and throws things at her regularly. * AbhorrentAdmirer: She has one who constantly keeps a close eye on her and (thinking she was a boy at first) Hatchin.

* {{Foil}}: Despite Hatchin not being black herself, she and Rita make a healthy friendship bond at a young age contrast the abusive one between Michiko and Atsuko.

* NiceGuy: After being confronted by Hatchin, it turns out that he's this. He even willingly helps her by cheering Michiko up. Pretty nice for someone who essentially got his apartment broken into.

* DarkAndTroubledPast: Unlike how Michiko was always rash and an overall fighter, Atsuko was usually the target of violence until she had enough of being with Michiko.
