->A small, but tough and street-smart [[OurOrcsAreDifferen Lutin]] who works as a PrivateDetective and gets involved in some ''weird'' cases. He's pretty much an archetypal DeadpanSnarker HardboiledDetective, except for being short and green.

* LemonyNarrator: He narrates his stories like a ''proper'' HardboiledDetective, complete with StrangeSimilies and UnusualEuphemisms.

That said, there are differences: Artax is much grouchier and snarkier, but with a stronger moral, than the polite, AffablyEvil ''Spells 'R' Us'' wizard, and he's also a more obviously complex character with a life of his own beyond selling magical items, as this setting treats the store and the character type a lot more seriously.

The truth is... [[HiddenDepths more complicated than that.]]

* GrumpyOldMan: Definitely has traits of this; he often gets impatient with others and has no ends of sarcasms, insults and {{Cool And Unusual Punishment}}s for those who annoy him, but he's ultimately good-hearted and helpful towards those who really need it.

-> A gifted [[{{Seer}} esper]], artist, and member of the Psi Collective who was Daniel Sharabi's high school sweetheart, and who still harbored deep feelings for him even after she was made one of the wives in the Sommers' breeding cell.

* {{Seer}}: She has limited control over her visions, but they are always accurate, and her friends and family have learned to take them very seriously.

-> A young elven woman who worked as a medical researcher before she ended up on the wrong side of Malcolm ard'Valos and eventually became his blood thrall. She's later given to Miriam Baktavar to be her blood thrall.

* HiddenDepths: ...though she turns out to not be ''entirely'' broken, and Miriam's kindness to her makes her regain some of her former strength and life spark.
* [[MrExposition Miss Exposition]]: Provides Miriam (and the audience) with a lot of information about the Vampire Syndicate and how they work.

!! Seralina Greyhaven

* SplitPersonality: A variant. The male and female halves of the character, Evan and Eva, refer to each other as if they were two different people, and have slight differences in tastes and preferences, but they share memories, experiences and have very similar personalities.

* TheSociopath: Almost a textbook example, he's one of the few characters in the series with [[CompleteMonster no real redeeming or even likeable qualities.]]

* IHateYouVampireDad: Tends to invoke this feeling in the vampires he sires, [[CompleteMonster and with good reason]] -- but since the vampires in this universe have strong compulsions that makes them incapable of harming or disobeying their sire, the feeling is generally where it stops.

* KnightInSourArmor: [[YourMileageMayVary Depending on who you ask,]] he might sometimes border on KnightTemplar or WellIntentionedExtremist.

* XanatosGambit: Pulls one off in ''Making the Cut.''

* EmbarrassingNickname: His family call him "Jamie," which is one of two reasons why he prefers going by "Will." (The other rason is that he thinks "Will" sounds more like a writer's name.)

-> A massage therapist, low-powered pyrokinetic and non-telepathic member of the Psi Collective, he is one of the many male psionics who gets maginalized by the Collective because he doesn't have any strong powers to pass on to future generations. It doesn't help that he's gay, either.

* TheArthurDent: In a series where the other viewpoint characters are psionisists, wizards, androgynes or non-human in some way, Will is described as "really a pretty normal kid" with no magic, psionics or supernatural abilities. In a city like Metamor, it makes him a bit of a FishOutOfWater.

* VillainWithGoodPublicity: Sometimes bordering on DevilInPlainSight. Everyone ''knows'' he's a ruthless vmpire price, but officially he remains a law-obiding businessman.

* MasterOfYourDomain: And a highly skilled one at that, [[spoiler:to the point where she can use them after becoming a vampire, to make herself appear as a living, breathing human.]]

* LesbianVampire: Well... like so many other examples of the trope (and like so many other characters in the series) she is really bisexual, [[AnythingThatMoves not really caring whether it's a man or a woman she's hitting on, and in fact has a distinct taste for the "exotic."]]
