When her best friend Kevin turns out to be an Inhuman, she helps train him so they can one day fight crime together. However, he becomes overconfident and goes on a patrol by himself without telling Gwen. By the time Gwen finds out and catches up, Kevin has been murdered by a Kree villain, with Gwen being framed for the crime and now out to avenge him. The comics have Gwen initially use her powers for profit before hearing her father criticize her persona for wasting her talents, which pushes her to begin crime-fighting.
