* JapaneseDelinquents: Though the army are actually Chinese adults and the setting takes place during the Warring States period, the general aesthetic of the Huan Yi army is highly reminiscent of tropes of delinquents in other Animanga. Bonus points for the commanders being leaders of delinquent clans before following Huan Yi after being defeated by him.

* Foil / EvilCounterpart: To Xin. Both came from a lowly background with no real military training, and personally gathered a highly personalized and unorthodox army. Both act like friends rather than bosses to their subordinates, and display a casual and irreverent attitude to authority structures. They are also highly unorthodox yet immensely successful, as shown when they both got honorable achievements in Shanyang for their feats (slaying a Heavenly King each and being decisive to victory). And like Xin who lost Piao, Huan Yi hints at a great tragedy driving him to warfare. However, while Xin is a compassionate, righteous individual who seeks to unite China to end war, Huan Yi is a ruthless psychopath who believes uniting China is a farce and simply an excuse for the ultimate slaughter. Where Xin is merciful and opposes brutal treatment of victims and prisoners, risking his position for his ideals in Shanyang/Sanyou, Huan Yi brutally tortures, murders and rapes anyone from the opposing side.

Making a new page for the Huan Yi/Kan Ki Army for Kingdom, as part of my large-scale changes to the character pages.

Added DiffLines:

Back to the Manga/Kingdom characters page.

Qin's pet monster. Huan Yi's army consists entirely of mighty bandit clans, and back in their day as criminals they defeated every Qin army that attempted to stop them. After Meng Ao recruits them into his army, they remain...very much the same really, only arguably worse as their newfound military authority allows them to commit ghastly atrocities across the entire country.

Despite their war crimes standing against everything Zheng hopes to achieve, the strength of Huan Yi and his army, rumored to rival the Qin Six, make him effectively indispensable. In fact, many of Qin's great victories rest on the back of Huan Yi's monstrous acts.

* ArmyOfThievesAndWhores: An army of bandits, mountain men and other criminals.
* DefeatEqualsFriendship: Many of the clans under Huan Yi's wing were defeated by him and then made his subordinates.
* EvilCounterpart: To the Fei Xin Unit, as an entirely personalized unit who joined their leader out of DefeatEqualsFriendship or respect, featuring varied and quirky men of various talents. Of course, in Huan Yi's case his army comes with a mild caveat of being the vilest in Qin.
* KillItWithFire: 'If all else fails, set it on fire' seems to be how the Huan Yi army rolls. Wu Fengming could tell you one thing or two about it.
* MildlyMilitary: The Huan Yi Army doesn't really observe military protocol, with Huan Yi treating his subordinates more as casual friends. The main draw of his army, according to Na Gui, is the level of freedom it provides.
* Rape, Pillage and Burn: Their defining trait. Unlike Wan Ji, whom the Zhao keep around precisely because of his penchant for doing this, the Huan Yi army is allowed to abuse civilians not as their goal, but as their price. Sure, this is certainly useful (as this particular habit of theirs was what won Heiyang/Kokuyou, if you think about it), but it is Huan Yi who is the grand prize for the Qin military. They know he's a WildCard of sorts and cannot risk letting him go to their enemies, and thus turn a blind eye to the absolutely horrific things he and his men enjoy doing so much. As long as he remains a useful attack dog for the government, Huan Yi and his men can do pretty much whatever they want, and no one will bat an eyelash. And he knows it. That's why he's so calm even when : if someone in the Qin military ever flips out and kills him for good, they are screwed.
* TokenEvilTeammate: Probably the only army in the entire country to be populated entirely by evil, sociopathic bastards.

!!Huan Yi
!!!Japanese Pronunciation: Kan Ki

A former bandit leader before he was recruited by the Qin army.

->Stats: Strength |93|, Leadership |92|, Knowledge |95|, Cruelty 99 Eyeballs|
----
* AllOrNothing: His style of warfare involves taking huge risks that could mean either complete victory or defeat depending on enemy response. This is implied to be his weakness, but it has also worked every single time.
* AlmightyJanitor: Serves as Meng Ao's deputy despite being more than capable enough to be his superior. Even after Meng Ao's death and winning the highly important Battle of Heiyang with amazing results, he was not promoted to Great General. This is implied to be because of his brutal and cruel nature. He is eventually promoted to Great General
* BatmanGambit: During the Heiyang Hills campaign, he [[spoiler: gives up the strategically important central hill, but exploits Ji Hui's love for his hometown by massacring civilians and sending their mutilated bodies to the enemy commander. Ji Hui leaves the hill to chase Huan Yi, allowing Xin and his unit to claim the hill. Huan Yi's plan rested entirely on whether Ji Hui's emotions would outweigh his responsibilities as a Zhao general, something that according to Diao, even Li Mu or Lord Changping would not have attempted.]]
* BecauseImGoodAtIt: His entire reason for being a General. He's a prodigy in warfare and no one has been able to beat him, even when he was a bandit.
* BenevolentBoss: Sort of. He reassures his men before embarking on a dangerous mission, and allows them a high degree of autonomy. His unorthodox tendencies are also good at reducing casualties in battle.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: He is an ex-bandit who massacres every POW in his custody. Everyone looks the other way because he is just that good.
* CurbstompBattle: The Battle of Heiyang wounds up being this in his favour, with Diao realising with shock that Qin won so thoroughly and with less than half the expected casualties.
* CombatPragmatist: Has no concept of 'playing fair'. Guerilla warfare and psychological scare tactics are standard procedure for him.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Implied. A member of the Sha Gui clan that has known him for a long time says that Huan Yi's motivation is rage. It's not that hard to imagine that his penchant for cruelty and brutality is a way of giving back what he received.
* DarkIsEvil: He (and his army) are mostly seen dressed in dark armor. He's also the closest thing to a completely irredeemable bastard that this military series based around the Qin conquest of Ancient China has. Think about this for a second.
* DeadGuyOnDisplay: spoiler:That village they've pillaged recently? Huan Yi made a giant arc from dismembered corpses of elderly and children and showed it to Ji Hui, promising to do the same with his hometown nearby. The panic cost Zhao the hill and the Heiyang Campaign with it.
* DudeWheresMyRespect: One can think that this is why he respects Meng Ao so much. Huan Yi doesn't give two fucks about military honor, protocol or what have you; he's in the game because he likes it. And yet, he remained at kind, grandfatherly Meng Ao's side for years. He even claims to sympathize with Xin at first because they both understand how it is to be at the bottom of the social ladder. Maybe he has such a high degree of respect for Meng Ao because he treated him with respect when no one else would.
* TheDragon: He serves as Vice-General to Meng Ao and is one of the reasons for his successes. Surprisingly, his respect for Meng Ao appears genuine.
* TheDreaded: Is greatly feared by other states not just because of his ability but his sheer cruelty. Fear of what Huan Yi will do to Liyan alone is enough to cause Ji Hui to give up the Battle of Heiyang.
* EnfantTerrible: The flashback of him shows that he's been like...this since he was thirteen. At the latest.
* FatalFlaw: Li Mu and Gohoumei believe they have found his weakness, which is implied to be his tendency towards all-or-nothing gambles.
** They naturally come to an ideological clash at the climax of Heiyang after Huan Yi slaughters an entire village and turns them into artwork just to frighten Ji Hui. It can be argued that while Xin is Zheng's sword who will carry out his dream if he becomes one of the Six Great Generals, Huan Yi being allowed to war freely would be the opposite and represent the death of Zheng's ideals to the rest of China.
* HiddenDepths: Zhang Tang notes that despite his quirks and criminal background, Huan Yi is a brave man and entrusts protecting Qin to him before his death.
* HiddenInPlainSight: Pulls this off during the and it allows him and Zhang Tang to get close and slay the enemy commander and quickly retreats before anyone notices.
* ItAmusedMe: Apparently, that's why Wu Yi Hu is kept around.
-->Mo Lun: Boss... I've wanted to ask for a while now... Why did you make that guy a 1000-man commander?
-->Huan Yi: 'Cause it's funny, obviously.
* ItsPersonal: Implied. When Na Gui joins the Fei Xin unit, he explains that the only insight he has into Huan Yi is that a member of the Sha Gui clan once told him that the core of what motivates him is 'rage', though against who and what wasn't made clear. Given Huan Yi's indiscriminate and painful slaughter of both soldiers and civilians, it's implied to be anger against the world itself that he takes out on anybody unfortunate enough to cross his path.
* KillItWithFire: 'If all else fails, burn it' is his army's modus operandi.
* NervesOfSteel: Disguises himself as an enemy soldier and wades through 150,000 enemies to assassinate their commander during the . He even shouts encouragement to the enemy archers as he's passing by.
* PerpetualSmiler: Even when mad at Zhang Tang, his smile doesn't go away.
* PsychoticSmirk: His default expression. And it's a damn scary one.
* PurpleIsPowerful: It's the color of his armor.
* RapePillageAndBurn: As a former bandit, he has no problems with attacking surrounding villages. He was doing it even before joining the military; it's why he joined it, actually.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Delivers one to Xin of all people. He reminds Xin that his goal of unifying China would involve bloodshed and conquest on a massive scale, making Xin just as much of an evil murderer as Huan Yi himself.
* ThisIsReality: Lampshaded in universe when he tells Xin his actions only reflect the reality of war, and that they are both murderers. However, it rings completely hollow as Huan Yi's actions are excessively and pointlessly cruel.
* RedBaron: Huan Yi the Beheader.
* SmarterThanYouLook: Anyone who meets Huan Yi for the first time thinks he's just a barbarian who relies on brute strength of his disorganized bandits. Not only has he polished the tactics with his troops into his own style, he's a CombatPragmatist and a master of psychological warfare, every bit of excessive cruelty is just a part of his multiple-step plan.
* SmugSmiler: Smiles a lot.
** SmugSuper: He's a stellar general, and he knows it.
* StepfordSmiler: Despite his permanent grin, a member of the Sha Gui clan who has known Huan Yi for a long time implies he is actually motivated by rage.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: With Zhang Tang, and later Xin.
* TokenEvilTeammate: While Wang Jian is distrustful, he hasn't shown any ill intent or cruelty, only selfish pragmatism. Meng Wu may have been allied with Lu Buwei, but was only really doing so in name. Huan Yi on the other hand, commits horribly cruel and elaborate deaths for those he meets either as enemies or civilians, and is generally considered to be one of the worst generals to meet in a battle because of how much he will make his enemies suffer before their deaths. He even makes a point to extend this to civilians in the area if he can, for no reason than to try and hurt as many people as he can during war.
* Troll: While it was part of a larger scheme, he clearly enjoys betraying the expectations of both his enemies and allies when he chooses to sit around and have a massage during a decisive moment of the Battle of Heiyang. He describes his warfare as simply doing whatever he feels will make people angry...which he is very good at.
* UndyingLoyalty: In spite of what his personality might suggest, Huan Yi seems to be very loyal to Meng Ao. When he passes away, Huan Yi honors him in his own, albeit twisted way by burning some captured soldiers alive as an offering to him.
* TheUnfettered: Continues to lecture and mock Xin even as Qiang Lei has a blade to his neck.
* Wrath: When Na Gui joins the Fei Xin unit, he gives his insight into Huan Yi and his brutal strategies throughout the conflict, explaining that even those close to him like Lei Tu have little to no idea what drives him. The only clue he has is from a member of the Sha Gui clan, who have been with Huan Yi the longest, who told him that the core of what drives Huan Yi is rage, though against whom or what was never elaborated. This informs Huan Yi's willingness to commit war crimes without batting an eye, implying that underneath his usual appearance, he is constantly simmering with anger.
* WouldHurtAChild: He has no problem slaughtering children.

!!Commanders

!!Lei Tu
!!!Japanese Pronunciation: Rai Do
The main offensive force of Huan Yi's army, Lei Tu is a brutish bandit leader of a certain low cunning, and generally portrayed as Huan Yi's second in command.
----
* BaldOfEvil: Well, balding of evil.
* ColdBloodedTorture: Is subjected to this by Hu Zhe's men.
* CoDragons: Alongside Mo Lun and Hei Ying. He is generally given field command if Huan Yi is not present, and is the most willing to stand up to him.
* CurbStompBattle: He stands no chance against Lian Po’s Heavenly King Jie Zi Fang once Huan Yi's HQ is discovered. Subverted as Huan Yi had abandoned defeating Jie Zi Fang by that point and decided to target Bai Guixi instead.
* DefeatEqualsFriendship: He joined Huan Yi's army after he was defeated by him, but apparently gave Huan Yi a considerable amount of difficulty before submitting.
* FatBastard: A rather fat, heavyset man, and a cruel JerkAss.
* HairTriggerTemper: Quick to anger, he even threatens to kill Mo Lun for mocking his intellect.
* JerkAss: He insults Xin and the Fei Xin Unit despite their critical role in winning the battle of Heiyang, mocking their intelligence and ability. And of course, he's a cruel and amoral bandit and murderer.
* PerpetualFrowner: Almost permanently grumpy and serious
** SlasherSmile: Barring one occasion where Xin punches him in the face, leading to an excited grin.
* TacticalWithdrawal: An interesting variant and subversion. Trapped in Qing She's web, Lei Tu sounds the 'Red Hare' with his whistle, which commands every bandit to make a mad dash to escape, with every man running for himself instead of a proper tactical retreat with a rear guard. This appears to be a completely desperate, pathetic move, but this tactic actually allows for the least casualties.
* TattooedCrook: A former bandit with a ring-shaped tattoo around his eye.
* UndyingLoyalty: Has more trust and faith in Huan Yi than any of his other lieutenants, though even he cannot fathom why Huan Yi would abandon the central Heiyang hill at such a critical point. The point is hammered home more when he refused to reveal Huan Yi's plan to Hu Zhe even under torture.

!!Mo Lun
!!!Japanese Pronunciation: Ma Ron
Another of Huan Yi's lieutenants and his main advisor, Mo Lun is a mustached crook with a gentlemanly demeanor unendingly, if often condescendingly polite in contrast with Lei Tu's brutishness.
----
* AffablyEvil: Extremely polite and courteous, to the point of being patronizing, even when delivering horrible threats.
* AndAnotherThing: As he begins to leave after civilly discussing strategy with the Fei Xin Unit, he tells "one more thing"...that if they were to fail again, the Sha Gui Clan would turn up and inflict upon them unimaginable agony.
* BeardOfEvil: He even twirls it to boot!
* CulturedBadass: A polite gentleman interested in the finer things in life but also a capable commander and strategist capable of fighting on par with generals. He even commands his troops with a handheld fan!
* CoDragons: Alongside Lei Tu and Hei Ying. He takes charge of conventional strategy and planning to support Huan Yi's gambits and wild schemes.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: Initially portrayed as an AudienceSurrogate who is always out of his depth with regards to Huan Yi's schemes. By the time the Heiyang arc comes along and Hara begins seriously developing the Huan Yi army, he is retconned into someone long familiar with Huan Yi's antics and a calm and cool individual defined by his patronizing politeness.
* DeclarativeFinger: Loves doing this while explaining the situation or pointing out a misunderstanding, notably to inform the Fei Xin Unit that the Sha Gui Clan would punish them if they screwed up again.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: While he still goes through with the plan,
* GentlemanSnarker: Gives this impression as he mocks Lei Tu and Hei Ying on various occasions while maintaining his air of politeness.
* PragmaticVillainy: Does nothing to help the Huan Yi Army when the Fei Xin Unit attack them for their horrific war crimes, even with Hei Ying and Huan Yi held at bladepoint, but only because he is aware he can't do anything to Qiang Lei.
* RealMenCook / ChefOfIron: Fitting with his gentlemanly persona, Mo Lun is a highly capable chef, cooking horse meat for the rest of the team after the first day of the Battle of Zhuhai/Shukai Plains.
* TheStrategist: In contrast to Huan Yi who 'does things to make people angry', he takes on the role of a more traditional strategist.
* TattooedCrook: A single streak-like on his cheek.
* WickedCultured: As much as a vicious bandit leader can be.
* TheUnfettered: Besides Huan Yi, he is the only member to show no concern as the Fei Xin Unit wreaks havoc, deciding he can't really do anything about it anyway.

!!Ze Nuo
!!!Japanese Pronunciation: Zen Ou
Ze Nuo is a giant of a man, towering over even Meng Wu. Resembling more monster than human, he leads an army of war-loving berserkers. Huan Yi's trump card and secret weapon, he is an unstoppable juggernaut in the battlefield.
----
* BadassArmy: Fittingly as its strongest warrior, Ze Nuo's subordinates are the strongest clan in the Huan Yi army. * BaldOfEvil
* TheBerserker: Him and his entire army.
* BloodKnight: He and his army and all bloodthirsty berserkers who worship war and combat.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: His strength is completely inhuman due to his massive size, allowing him to crush human heads with his bare hands like rotten fruit. Despite using a blunt instrument as a weapon, he is so strong striking fully armored soldiers that it blows them in two.
* TheBrute: Rare example where he truly is the strongest in the entire army and its greatest offensive force, being depicted as more of a trump card despite being outranked by Lei Tu, Mo Lun and Hei Ying.
* CoveredWithScars: His face alone has dozens of them. This trope applies to his entire clan to show how much of a BloodKnight they are.
* CurbStompBattle: Despite blindsiding him, Ji Hui is blown away by a single lazy swing from Ze Nuo which also bends his glaive like a cheap spoon, effectively ending the duel. Ji Hui's and Qing She's armies are similarly easily butchered by him.
* TheQuietOne: Rarely speaks, in contrast to his massive physical size and strength.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: His eyes are extremely bloodshot to denote his madness and bloodthirstiness.
* SpikesOfVillainy: A ring of what appears to be giant fangs around his neck.
* YourHeadAsplode: Because of his massive strength, taking a blow from Ze Nuo tends to end up like this.
