He takes on Rio in match to death just to prove if he is worthy of being his student, and since his strength is derived from ThePowerOfHate, his training for Rio proves so brutal that Rio fears for his well being.
** Rageku's initial training isn't any better. She poisons Rio and then states she is taking Mele as a student while forcing her to fight Sha Fu. As it turns out, the entire plan was done to make Rio jealous of Mele coming close to killing Sha Fu, so the envy would cause him to push himself to attack Rageku in spite of the poison killing him.
