History Characters / HettyFeather

Jem Cotton (b.1872) is a main character, introduced in the title book. Sweet and caring, he is endlessly patient to this ehe loves, particularly Hetty, making sure to write to her consistently when she is in service and in the Hospital. Son of Peg and john Cotton, his profession is farming, taking over his duties on the village farm when his father died in 'Emerald Star'.

Hetty is fiery and has an extremely short fuse, struggling with discipline and authority. She cares deeply for those she loves and tries her best to be kind, but is often narcissistic and self-entered. She unintentionally hurts those around her, particularly her foster brother Jem as we see later on in the series.

Hetty Feather (AKA Sapphire Battersea to her mother and Emerald Star on stage) is a spunky, intelligent foundling girl who wants to make her own way in the world. From finding and losing her birth mother, to becoming a music hall and circus success, it's fair to say she has lived a rather colourful life, often leaving devastation behind her. She is kind and wants the best for those around her, but can be extremely selfish and egotistical, particularly when comparing herself to others. She has a furious temper, and is stubborn to a T.

Throughout the series, she experiences moderate character development: her temper lessens, and becomes less self centred eventually, although she still finds herself unintentionally hurting those around her, especially her foster brother, Jem, on more than one occasion. Hetty ends up accidentally stringing him along for months when she returns to help take care of her sick foster mother and almost ruins his wedding and life by causing him to admit he's still madly in love with Hetty, not his fiancée.
