* ManicPixieDreamGirl: To the brooding and mysterious Jem, Hetty is a breath of fresh air and pulls him out of his 'boring' ways. However, Hetty herself does not reciprocate Jem's advances, so the trope is averted more than anything.

This is made especially painful when Hetty actually becomes self-aware of her ''own''previous idolisation of Jem when cracks start to show in her own feelings for him, which results in a painful BrokenPedestal moment for her.

* LovingAShadow: Jem loves the wife and caregiver Hetty but not the stubborn, rude and impulsive side of her. Jem doesn't understand that Hetty has needs and dreams she needs to fulfil on her own and is still working out who she is, and isn't ''ready'' to settle down and live in a domestic setting. This contributes to Hetty becoming Jem's own ManicPixieDreamGirl, who exists contingently on his view of her. However, he does acknowledge their incompatibility in order to comfort Hetty in that she wasn't 'abandoning' him necessarily at the end of ''Emerald Star'', but this leads to an AesopAmnesia moment for Jem by ''Little Stars'', as he proposes running away before his wedding with her.

* RunawayFiance: Defied. [[spoiler: Jem attempts to persuade Hetty to runaway with him, but ultimately the marriage happens anyway when Hetty brings him back to reality by reminding him of the consequences.]]
