Kirie lived in Himuro Mansion and was chosen to become the next sacrifice for the Strangling Ritual. Part of the preparation for this ritual meant having her separated from other people, to avoid having her form emotional bonds with anyone. But she met a young man visiting Himuro Mansion, and his stories about the outside world fascinated her, and she fell in love with him.\\

A samurai serving the Himuro Family Master, he fell in love with one of the Rope Shrine Maidens and tried to stop her from taking part in the ritual, but was stopped and ordered to commit {{Seppuku}} for disgracing his duty as a protector. His restless spirit, believing breaking the seal on the Hell Gate would reunite him with his lover, appeared to Kirie in her dreams and instructed her to fail the ritual on purpose. While it did fail, he was never reunited with his beloved.

* BonusBoss: Appears at the Abyss when playing on ''Fatal'' difficulty, and actually has to be defeated to allow the player to save on the final night for that difficulty. He behaves similarly to Lord Himuro, but cannot be pushed back by critical shots, and continuously approaches the player. Since Tokitada is invisible, the player must pay closer attention to hearing him, and has a small timeframe of him being visible and susceptible to being damaged by the Camera Obscura.
* TheHeavy: Implied to be among the causes of the Calamity occuring because his spirit wanted the Holy Mirror and the seal on the Hellgate to be broken, believing it would release his lover's spirit. ----
* ApocalypticLog: Priest's Writings.
* AttackItsWeakPoint: All four can only be targeted and damaged when their heads become visible.
* BodyHorror: The four of them were beheaded, so their ghosts have necks that vanish into thin air until their heads appear.
* TheDragon: All four to the Family Master.
* FourIsDeath: The Strangling Ritual demands that four priests join the family master in using the Rope Altar to kill the maiden tied to it.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: The priest fought at the Cherry Atrium has two swords going through his torso.
* PlayingWithFire: The priest at the Backyard area can throw ethereal fireballs.
* TeleportSpam: All of them tend to do this during battle in different ways each. The Abyss and Square Garden priests do it in ways that make it even trickier to dodge them, with the former moving skyward out of camera view before appearing right on top of you, and the latter "burying" himself on the ground to appear at Miku's feet.

----
* AttackItsWeakPoint: Her head is the only spot that can be photographed for damage, meaning the player has to wait for her to turn around to take shots at her.
* BodyHorror: ''Her neck is snapped '''all the way backwards!'''''
* JumpScare: In battle, she'll float closer to the viewfinder then suddenly turn her face around to the camera.
** There's also a possibility your camera's sensor light will flash and her music will begin playing, but you won't see her anywhere, not even as a distortion. Pull up viewfinder mode and ''she'll slide into view right at your face''.
* {{Mook}}: Apart from one mandatory instance (right after the vanishing ghost encounter showing her death), she's one of the ghosts that can be encountered at random in the first game as Miku explores the mansion.

[[folder:Former Rope Shrine Maiden]]

The ghost of a Rope Shrine Maiden before Kirie whose ritual was successful. Appears first during Night 3 as a random encounter ghost before being dealt with in the Final Night at the Rope Hallway.
----
* CameBackWrong: Since her ritual was successful, her spirit was supposed to be at rest or holding the Hell Gate from opening. But when Kirie's ritual failed, she returned as a vengeful ghost.
* TheDragon: To Kirie, as the final normal ghost fought by the player and being right outside the Hell Gate.
* HalfTheManHeUsedToBe: All she has is her upper body.
* HellIsThatNoise: Her appearance is accompanied by the cracks and stretching noises of ropes and the Rope Altar's wheels.
* TheNameless: Who this Rope Shrine Maiden is was never revealed, with fan speculation ranging from this being Long Arms' daughter to Tokitada Kyuki's lover. Made worst by the fact that "''Fatal Frame III: The Tormented''" introduced Kizuna Himuro, herself a Rope Shrine Maiden fought regularly in that game that looks rather similar to the one fought in this game (albeit more detailed and with her arms and head floating apart from her body). And with the vague timeline placement for Kizuna's ritual, she could be either one or even ''both''.
* VaryingTacticsBoss: Up until the Rope Altar in the Final Night, her strategy is just to stay planted on the ground and try to reach for Miku when she gets close, occasionally teleporting behind her for a surprise attack, but even then she moves rather slowly. Leave the Altar, though, and she reappears for the final round, changing from a MightyGlacier to a GlassCannon, chasing after Miku by crawling incredibly fast towards her with even more healthy and able to cause serious damage.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Miscellaneous Ghosts]]

* AncientEvil: Quite a few of the "fodder" ghosts apply. The Floating Face, for example, is so ancient that it lost its original form through time until it was merely an amorphous cloud of vapor with a screaming face in it.
* CameBackWrong: Supposedly the case with the Long Hair Woman. A Hidden Ghost entry in the Spirit List has the same name as the hostile version, and states she used to be a woman with beautiful hair that wanted everyone to see it, but succumbed to the Malice. The hostile ghost's entry, meanwhile, states that she's a demon that came out of the Hell Gate and wants to drag others to Hell with her. If they ''are'' the same, then her death caused her to be corrupted by the Malice and attack any living passerby she encounters.
* FloatingLimbs: Hand from Floor.
* FlyingFace: The Female Head and the [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin Floating Face]] ghosts.
* TheGoomba: Bound Man, the first ghost to ever be fought in the series. His health is low every time, and all he does is rush at you. Female Head also applies, since all it ''can'' do is rush at you.
* HumanoidAbomination: Wandering Man and Floating Woman, both of which are described as ancient spirits that spewed out of the Hell Gate during the Calamity, trying to drag people down into Hell.
** The Long Hair Woman might also apply, depending on if the Hidden Ghost bearing the same name truly ''is'' her.
* LosingYourHead: Female Head is the floating decapitated head of a woman killed by Lord Himuro.
* RandomEncounter: Most of the other ghosts in the mansion are merely optional fights, appearing whenever you explore for too long. Occasionally, however, you ''will'' be forced to fight at least one of them, especially at the Final Night where most of them are sealed for good by the Camera Obscura.
** Depending on what you do, Female Head can be fought in two pre-set situations, once at the Stairway in Night 1 and then in the Attic at the Final Night if you examine a peephole;
** Wandering Man and Floating Woman are fought simultaneously at the Hell Bridge on the way to the Rope Altar.
** You can have a fight with the Long Hair Woman at the Grand Hall during Night 2, which even begins with a cutscene;
** You ''begin'' Night 3 by leaving the Banned Path while fighting the People Killed;
** Returning to the Corridor during Night 3 has you fight the Floating Face at least once.
* SinisterMinister: The Wandering Monk, a monk who traveled to Himuro Mansion to exorcise the evil within it, but ended up dying and becoming one of the hauntings instead.
* TheSwarm: People Killed, who always appear in threes.
* UniqueEnemy: Hand from Floor. It only appears during Night 1 after defeating Takamine but without taking the Buddha statue, heading back to the Abyss, defeating 13 other ghosts, saving your game and waiting for the background music to kick in (even then, this method isn't precise and it shares its music with the Bound Man). It cannot be tracked by the Camera Obscura and it will only become visible when you're right up close to it... [[JokeCharacter And then it does pathetic damage and dies in one shot.]] And it's not even registered in the Spirit List.
* ZergRush: People Killed will sometimes do this if all three are still active, launching themselves at you one after another.

Mafuyu headed into Himuro Mansion because his professor and some colleagues of his went missing there. While exploring the mansion, he ran into Kirie's spirit and ended up disappearing himself, causing Miku to come in after him.\\
\\
Mafuyu can be glimpsed repeatedly throughout the game, but not interacted with. [[folder: Kirie]]

!!!Voiced by: Yoko Yamamoto (Japanese), Leene Hardt (English)
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kirie_1.png]]

The antagonist of ''Fatal Frame I''.

Kirie lived in Himuro Mansion and was raised to become the sacrifice of the Rope ritual. Preparations for this began during her childhood and she was kept separate from people, to avoid her forming emotional attachments.

However, a few days before the ritual was to be performed, she happened to meet a young man and fell in love with him. The conflict that rose in her mind caused her ritual to fail and the Hellgate was thrown wide open, unleashing the Malice. She now haunts the halls as a malevolent spirit that kills anyone who crosses it, while a second spirit of hers is more benevolent towards humans.

Kirie reappears in ''Fatal Frame III'' as a very strong ghost, with a high chance of appearing during the later hours of the game.
----
* ApocalypticLog: Her diary can be found, depicting her last days.
* BarrierMaiden: She was to hold the Hellgate closed.
* BreakTheCutie: She was isolated from the outside world and the only people she came in contact with wore masks, to prevent her from forming an emotional bond with anyone. When she was old enough to perform the ritual, she was killed.
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: Ropes tied to her extremities tore her apart.
* DemonicPossession: The Malice corrupted her spirit into becoming hostile.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: She didn't kill Mafuyu because he looked very similar to her lover.
* HealThyself: She can regenerate some of her lost health when teleporting to a different location.
* HesitantSacrifice: Falling in love made her hesitant to do the ritual.
* HumanoidAbomination: The Malice behind her, which is a blurry blob of body parts.
* InSeriesNickname: White Kimono or Girl in White.
* LiteralSplitPersonality: The vengeful spirit of Kirie that was corrupted by the Malice and intends to kill anyone who crosses her and her younger, innocent self that is trying to get the former to calm down and allow her to fulfill her duty.
* LoveHurts: Falling in love caused her to become conflicted between her duty as a shrine maiden and her human desire of being with her beloved. It was the main reason why her ritual failed.
* MightyGlacier: One touch of hers spells instant death, but she is very slow and easy to dodge. Though she does have an annoying tendency to teleport rather quickly, to compensate.
* {{Miko}}: The Rope Shrine Maiden.
* MysteriousWaif: The Girl in White.
* OneHitKill: One touch and Miku is killed instantly, even with a Stone Mirror.
* PowerFloats: The embodiment of the Malice keeps her afloat.
* PsychicPowers: She had the strongest psychic powers and was the last child to be caught during the Demon Tag ritual, which is why she was considered the perfect sacrifice for the Rope ritual.
* StarCrossedLovers: She and her unnamed lover. He was a mere visitor and had no chance to stay, while she wasn't supposed to form emotional bonds with anyone for the sake of the ritual. The priests killed him to protect her.
* StringyHairedGhostGirl: A typical example.
* TogetherInDeath: With Mafuyu staying behind. [[spoiler:The Photograph ending has Kirie and her lover's spirit reunite.]]
* ViolationOfCommonSense: Kirie appears as an unbeatable ghost at the end of each night. Going against the idea of the game (which is to ''avoid or fight hostile ghosts'' to prevent your character from being damaged), the player must let her touch Miku, in order to proceed.
* VirginSacrifice: For the Rope ritual.
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: Her corrupted, malevolent spirit wants everyone to experience her suffering.
* WomanInWhite: Both of her halves wear white kimono.

[[quoteright:227:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yaeffii.jpg]]

Miku and Mafuyu's great-grandmother. She moved into Himuro Mansion with her family several decades before the events of the first game take place. While her husband was studying the mansion's history and rituals, she helped him with the use of the Camera Obscura. She began to be driven insane by what the Camera Obscura was showing her. Yae's daughter ended up spirited away and Yae committed suicide.

Yae reappears in ''Fatal Frame II'' and is reintroduced as Yae Kurosawa, the twin sister of Sae. She and Sae were originally planned to take part in the Strangling ritual, but the two decided to escape the village beforehand. Their escape failed and the Repentance took place.
----
* AngstySurvivingTwin: Averted, she has repressed her memories of a twin sister.
* ApocalypticLog: Lady's Diary in I and Butterfly Diary in II.
* BreakTheCutie: Yae lost her entire village in a disaster that she indirectly caused, repressed those memories, and tried to have a normal life. Then she began to be driven insane what the Camera Obscura showed and, to top things off, her only child was taken by spirits.
* DrivenToSuicide: She hung herself after Mikoto's disappearance.
* GoMadFromTheRevelation: What she saw through the camera confused and scared her.
* IdenticalGranddaughter: Miyuki looks identical to Yae, which causes Miku to remember her mother's death upon seeing Yae's spirit hanging from a tree.
* IllGirl: She was mentioned to have been ill as an adult.
* InSeriesNickname: Hanged Woman in I.
* IronicEcho: Yae died from strangulation, just as Sae did years ago.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: She lost her memories of Minakami Village as a coping mechanism.
* LateToTheTragedy: When she noticed that Sae was gone, Yae went off to look for her. However, she got lost in the forest and only made it back to Minakami Village after the Repentance had occured.
* PosthumousCharacter: She has been dead for decades before the game starts.
* PsychicPowers: It's unknown how long she's had them and how strong they were. They were amplified through usage of the Camera Obscura, though, and began to drive her insane. Her great-grandchildren inherit her powers.
* SoleSurvivor: Of the Repentance that struck her village.
* SurvivorsGuilt: Yae tried to avoid this fate by escaping Minakami Village and not going through with the Strangling ritual. But Sae ended up captured and died, leaving Yae to suffer this fate anyway.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: Her running away from the village and getting separated from Sae was the beginning that allowed the Repentance to occur with no interference.
* VirginSacrifice: Was intended to be one for the Strangling ritual.
* WomanInWhite: In ''Fatal Frame II'', she is always wearing a white kimono.

Miku and Mafuyu's great-grandfather. Decades before the events of the game, he moved his family into Himuro Mansion, so he could read up on the secret rituals of the family. While his research brought fruition, it came at the cost of his daughter being spirited away and Yae's suicide.

Ryozo is reintroduced in ''Fatal Frame II'' as a student of Seijiro Makabe's. Makabe headed to Minakami Village to research the traditions of the place and Ryozo tried to find out what happened to his childhood friends, Itsuki and Mutsuki Tachibana. Following the instructions of Itsuki's letter, he helped Yae escape from the village.
----

* ChildhoodFriends: Of Itsuki and Mutsuki Tachibana in II.
* CuriosityKilledTheCast: His interest in researching the secret rituals of the Himuro Mansion led Mikoto to be kidnapped by spirits and his wife committing suicide. By the time he noticed what was going on, he had little time left himself.
* InSeriesNickname: Folklorist.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: After his wife died, Ryozo regretted moving to Himuro Mansion.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: He played a minor role in it, but his intent on helping Yae and Sae escape from Minakami Village allowed the Repentance to occur. In a similar vein, his moving to Himuro Mansion destroyed his family.

She was supposed to pick the next Demon Tag and Rope Shrine Maiden, but died before she could fulfill that duty.
----

* BodyHorror: He's balding and crawls around on the floor, hunched over with his abnormally long arms.
* ChildEater: He kidnaps children, having taken and killed Mikoto's friend while they were playing tag.
* CreepilyLongArms: His defining feature. It's never mentioned why they are so long.

[[folder: Tokitada Kyuki]]

The bonus boss of the game and a ghost that only appears when playing on ''Fatal'' difficulty. His ghost entry calls him Armored Warrior's Spirit, though his name and background gets mentioned in the notes of the headless priests.
----
* BonusBoss: Appears at the Abyss when playing on ''Fatal'' difficulty, and actually has to be defeated to allow the player to save on the final night for that difficulty.
He appeared in Kirie's dreams and encouraged her to break the Holy Mirror, leading to her ritual failing.
* LoveAtFirstSight: With the Rope Shrine maiden whose ritual he observed.
* NoNameGiven: Goes by Armored Warrior's Spirit, with his name mentioned in the notes of the headless priests.
* {{Seppuku}}: Forced to commit it when his attempt at freeing the Rope Shrine maiden failed, as he had brought dishonor upon himself.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Tokitada might be a mistranslation, since the kanji for his name 時定 is usually read as Toki'''s'''ada.
* StarCrossedLovers: Was in love with a previous Rope Shrine maiden and tried to free her before going through with the ritual. He was unsuccessful and she ended up being killed, with him being forced to commit suicide. He wanted to break the seal on the Hellgate to free her spirit and be reunited with her, but he never saw the woman's spirit again.

!!!Voiced by: Jun'ichi Kanemura (Japanese), Dominic Allen (English)
[[quoteright:150:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mafuyu_5.png]]

The initial protagonist of Fatal Frame I and Miku's older brother.

Mafuyu heads off to Himuro Mansion in hopes of finding, and hopefully managing to save, his professor and colleagues. However, he disappeared into the mansion himself some time ago, which led to Miku coming after him. Mafuyu can be glimpsed repeatedly throughout the course of the game, but not interacted with until the end.
----
* ApocalypticLog: He leaves some notes for Miku in the mansion.
* BigBrotherInstinct: He shows a strong desire to protect other people.
* DecoyProtagonist: He is only playable in the intro, before focus turns to Miku.
* HeroicSpirit: His only reason for heading into the mansion was to find his professor's team.
* IChooseToStay: Mafuyu decides to remain with Kirie at the Hellgate instead of escaping.
* IdenticalStranger: He looks remarkably similar to Kirie's unnamed lover, to the point that Miku mistakes the two when she sees Kirie's memories. His similarity is what prevented him from being instantly killed by Kirie's spirit.
* MissingMom: His mother committed suicide some time ago.
* NiceGuy: Miku described him as being sweet and kind.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: His intention on remaining with Kirie to appease her loneliness was self-sacrificial, but it led to more problems than solutions. His staying caused Miku a lot of grief and guilt, to the point that she willingly followed his spirit in the Manor of Sleep [[spoiler:and getting herself spiritually married to him]].
* PromotionToParent: He took on the role, after his mother committed suicide.
* PsychicPowers: He possesses a strong sixth sense, just like Miku.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: His main purpose in Fatal Frame I is to eventually remain with Kirie and die. But this has a longlasting effect on Miku, whose plot in III revolves around her desire to be with Mafuyu again and some of her actions in the fifth game.
* TogetherInDeath: With Kirie, since he chose to stay behind. [[spoiler:Also with Miku in V.]]

[[folder: Kirie]]

!!!Voiced by: Yoko Yamamoto (Japanese), Leene Hardt (English)
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kirie_1.png]]

The antagonist of Fatal Frame I.

Kirie reappears in Fatal Frame III as a very strong ghost, with a high chance of appearing during the later hours of the game.
----
* ApocalypticLog: Her diary can be found, depicting her last days.
* StringyHairedGhostGirl: A typical example.

[[folder: Yae Munakata]]

!!!Voiced by: Creator/AkemiKanda (Japanese, FFII), Bianca Allen (FFI), Creator/KariWahlgren (FFII), Daphne Alexander (DCB)

Yae reappears in Fatal Frame II and is reintroduced as Yae Kurosawa, the twin sister of Sae.
* BreakTheCutie: Yae lost her entire village in a disaster that she indirectly caused, repressed those memories and tried to have a normal life.
* WomanInWhite: In Fatal Frame II, she is always wearing a white kimono.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Ryozo Munakata]]

[[quoteright:154:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/munakata.png]]

Miku and Mafuyu's great-grandfather. Decades before the events of the game, he moved his family into Himuro Mansion, so he could read up on the secret rituals of the family. While his research brought fruition, it came at the cost of his daughter being spirited away and Yae's suicide.

Ryozo is reintroduced in Fatal Frame II as a student of Seijiro Makabe's. Makabe headed to Minakami Village to research the traditions of the place and Ryozo tried to find out what happened to his childhood friends, Itsuki and Mutsuki Tachibana. Following the instructions of Itsuki's letter, he helped Yae escape from the village.
----
* ApocalypticLog: Research Notes in I and the Green Diary in II.
* InSeriesNickname: Folklorist.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Mikoto Munakata]]

[[quoteright:216:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mikoto_0.png]]

The daughter of Ryozo and Yae Munakata, and grandmother of Miku and Mafuyu Hinasaki.
----
* GuardianEntity: The young version of Kirie acted as one for her, protecting her from the hostile spirits and leading her to safety after the curse began killing her friends and family.
* NotSoImaginaryFriend: She befriended the "Girl in the White Kimono", who her parents assumed was an imaginary friend.
* SoleSurvivor: The only known case of someone escaping Himuro Mansion's curse, prior to Miku breaking it.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: She found the Camera Obscura, and gave it to her parents... causing her mother to go insane, and the Hinasaki family to be burdened with the cursed camera and powerful psychic abilities.

* CruelAndUnusualDeath: Torn apart on the Shinto shrine's ceiling.
* CuriosityKilledTheCast: He purposefully headed into a mansion that was connected with a terrible massacre and a family that disappeared while living there, all for the sake of book research.

Due to her weak spirit powers, she was still influenced by the spirits in the house and suffered from visions. Tomoe was killed before she could warn Takamine and tell him how Kirie's benevolent spirit taught her how to break the curse.
----
* ApocalypticLog: The Red Notebooks and Red Tape.
* ColorCodedForYourConvenience: Red, used for her tapes and clothes.

The protagonist of Fatal Frame II and Mayu's younger twinsister. Mio is very protective of her sister, because she feels responsible for her leg injury, and looks after her every day. After both get lost in Minakami Village, Mio checked out the Osaka house. Mayu runs off deeper into the village and Mio vows to go after her and get her home.

Mio returns in Fatal Frame III, but she is not a playable character. After losing her twin sister, Mio gets lured into the Manor of Sleep and becomes afflicted with the Tatoo Curse. Her uncle, Kei Amakura, enters the manor and tries to rescue her.
----
* AngstySurvivingTwin: In Fatal Frame III.
* BalefulPolymorph: In the Frozen Butterfly ending[[spoiler:, it's implied that the red butterfly is Mio's spirit, after Mayu strangled her]].
* TheCaretaker: Towards Mayu.
* CreepyDoll: In the Frozen Butterfly ending, [[spoiler:Mayu can be seen putting make up on Mio's corpse]].
* EyeScream: The Hellish Abyss ending [[spoiler:has Mio learn why one isn't supposed to look into it]].
* TheHero: Gets to be one in the happier endings of Fatal Frame II.
* HeroicBSOD: Suffers one upon relaizing that she [[spoiler:killed Mayu]].
* IdenticalTwinIDTag: Her fringe has a gap on her right side and is swept aside, laying outward. Her clothes invoke a feeling of her being a more active person, with her wearing leggings under her skirt.
* InelegantBlubbering: Falls into this in the canon ending.
* KilledOffscreen: In the Frozen Butterfly ending, [[spoiler:the camera cuts away shortly after Mayu puts her hands over Mio's throat. Upon cutting back, Mio is staring unblinkingly towards the camera]].
* [[KnightTemplarBigBrother Knight Templar Little Sister]]: There's nothing she wouldn't do to keep her sister safe.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Stares at her hands after [[spoiler:killing Mayu]].
* MySisterIsOffLimits: Subverted, as a rare female example.
* {{Protectorate}}: Mayu to her. In the Hellish Abyss ending, it's reversed.
* PsychicPowers: Mio's powers are weaker than her sister's, which makes her less perceptive to ghosts. As she proceeds through the village and searches for Mayu, her powers grow stronger.
* SkirtOverSlacks: Wears black leggings under her white skirt.
* SuddenSequelDeathSyndrome: In the non-canon ending of Fatal Frame III.
* ThinkNothingOfIt: Her attitude towards protecting Mayu.
* TogetherInDeath: The Shadow Festival ending, with Mayu.
* TraumaCongaLine: Type C. Mio feels guilty over the knee injury that Mayu sustained during childhood and vowed to protect her. She loses sight of her in Minakami Village and searches for her, while fighting off spirits. In the end, she is forced to [[spoiler:kill her twin sister]] and spends the sequel revisiting and dealing that trauma.

[[folder: Mayu Amakura]]

[[quoteright:164:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mayuamakura.png]]

The older of the Amakura twins and is more calm and reserved than Mio. She has a permanent limp from a bad knee injury that she sustained as a child. Mayu gets pulled away by the spirits in Minakami Village and becomes possessed by Sae's spirit. Now she wants to complete the once-failed ritual with Mio.
----
* BitchInSheepsClothing: She comes across as weak and sweet, but there is more under the surface.
* IdenticalTwinIDTag: Her fringe is straight and her clothes are more demure.
* IfICantHaveYou: In the Frozen Butterfly ending[[spoiler:, she murders Mio in frustration, since her twin is refusing to go through the Strangling ritual with her]].
* KubrickStare: Paying attention, she stares creepily at the camera at times.
* TheLoad: Unfortunately, her most noticeable feature. On the other hand, she makes an excellent target for ghosts and Zero Shots are easier to obtain, if they choose to attack her.
* LaughingMad: The Frozen Butterfly ending has her have a moment.
* ManipulativeBitch: The Japanese Fanbook and novelization reveals that [[spoiler:she purposefully fell and injured her knee badly as a child, in order to force Mio to never leave her again]]. It's mentioned in the background chatter of the battle against Sae, but the remake made this aspect of Mayu more obvious.
* MeaningfulName: Mayu means Cocoon, tying into the butterfly theme. [[spoiler:And she turns into a butterfly.]]
* MoreThanMindControl: It's unclear exactly how much of Mayu's {{Yandere}} tendencies towards Mio came from Sae's possession. Originally thought to be mostly Sae's doing, the remake makes it more ambiguous that Mayu was like this to begin with and Sae simply amplified it.
* PleaseDontLeaveMe: She calls out for Mio to not run too far ahead of her.
* {{Protectorate}}: Mio is fiercely protective of her. Switched around in the Hellish Abyss ending.
* PsychicPowers: Mayu has a strong sixth sense, making her susceptible to possession.
* TogetherInDeath: With Mio in the Shadow Festival ending.
* VideoGameCaringPotential: Her main purpose to the player.
* VirginSacrifice: [[spoiler:Sacrificed to end the curse on Minakami Village.]]
* {{Yandere}}: Her relationship with Mio, though she tries to hide it.
* YouAreWorthHell: Mio goes through it for Mayu's sake.

!!!Voiced By: Creator/SoichiroHoshi (Japanese), Sam Saletta (English, FFII), Cameron Stewart (English, DCB)
[[quoteright:164:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/itsuki.png]]

A white-haired boy who is imprisoned in the storehouse. Mio encounters him while exploring the village and looking for Mayu. Itsuki tries to think of ways to help Mio and Mayu escape the village, though his words tend to confuse players.
----
* AngstySurvivingTwin: He feels dreadful over having killed his brother. And, since their ritual was a failure, it means that Mutsuki died for nothing.
* ApocalypticLog: The Bound Diaries and a Crystal Ore, which was labelled as Quartz Stone in the remake.
* DeadAllAlong: Unsurprisingly, Itsuki is nothing but a ghost.
* DrivenToSuicide: After having killed his brother, being imprisoned for trying to prevent Yae and Sae's ritual and feeling like he failed everyone, Itsuki hung himself.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: He's not the hero of the story, but Itsuki still suffered from this in the end.
* InSeriesNickname: Imprisoned Boy.
* LockedIntoStrangeness: His hair turned white, after he killed his brother.
* MrExposition: Talking to him has Itsuki explain things on what to do next.
* MyGreatestFailure: Having failed the ritual and unnecessarily killing his brother. Then there was the fiasco of Yae and Sae's escape, which was the last straw for him.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: His determination to prevent the ritual from happening again led to the destruction of his village.
* RedemptionEqualsDeath: His last diary entry has Itsuki wonder if trying to help Yae and Sae, as well as his suicide, would count as being forgiven by his brother's spirit.
* SelectiveObliviousness: He always refers to Mio and Mayu as Yae and Sae, respectively.
* VirginSacrifice: He performed the ritual with his brother.

[[folder: Sae Kurosawa]]

!!!Voiced By: Creator/AyakoKawasumi (Japanese), Creator/KimMaiGuest (English, FFII), Patricia Gannon (English, DCB)
[[quoteright:168:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sae17.png]]

The main antagonist of Fatal Frame II. She was a Twin Shrine Maiden and anxious to perform the ritual with her sister, Yae, but went along with trying to escape the village. However, Sae fell behind and was captured by the villagers. With Yae missing, Sae was forced to go through the ritual on her own, resulting in its failure and releasing the Repentance upon the village.
----
* AllLoveIsUnrequited: Sae was close to Itsuki, but because he is the Remaining twin and she was to be sacrificed, she knew nothing would come from it.
* ApocalypticLog: The Butterfly Diaries and Fluorite.
* AxCrazy: Upon unleashing the Repentance.
* BigBad: Of Fatal Frame II. She is also one of the more genuinely malevolent Big Bads given her past, though it's downplayed.
** BigBadDuumvirate: With the Kusabi, though she remains the main antagonist and has a more active role.
* BreakTheCutie: As tradition. She was raised to potentially go through the Strangling Ritual with Yae and even looked forward to it, only for Yae to decide to run away with her. Her own escape failed when she purposefully fell behind and was captured, only to realize that her sister was not coming back for her and then forced to do the ritual on her own.
* DeathGlare: A blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment in the Long Road Home Ending, the look Sae gives Mio is unsettling.
** TheFourthWallWillNotProtectYou: And since she's looking right at the camera, ''and you'', it doesn't help.
* DyingAlone: Hanged alone in an attempt to complete the ritual without Yae.
* DualBoss: One mission has the player fighting her and the Kusabi.
* EvilBrit: Has a strong, British accent in the remake.
* EvilLaugh: A particularly nightmareish one.
* FinalBoss: The original version had her only be fought on higher difficulties. In the remake, she becomes the final boss if certain conditions are met.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Of the four main antagonists, she is Sanguine.
* GigglingVillain: She mainly chuckles or giggles to herself.
* TheHyena: And sometimes she laughs out loud.
* IdenticalTwinIDTag: A small break in her bangs on her right was the only thing that distinguished her from Yae.
* InSeriesNickname: Bloody Kimono for her hostile form, White Kimono for the non-hostile one.
* LaughingMad: Constantly giggling or laughing.
* LightIsNotGood: The most vibrantly colored of the antagonists and the most psychotic.
* LightningBruiser: Contrast to [[MightyGlacier Kirie, who was rather slow to attack]], Sae teleports around a lot, has a shield to stop Mio's attacks, and as of the remake, has a OneHitKill.
* ManipulativeBitch: Sae fell behind ''on purpose'', in an attempt to force Yae to stop and help her, hopefully getting both captured. Unfortunately, Sae's plan backfired horribly.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: Bloody Kimono.
* OneHitKill: She originally didn't have one, but was much faster than Kirie. Played straight in the remake, where her touch is just as deadly as the Kusabi's.
* PerpetualSmiler: She always smiles. Creepily.
* PutTheLaughterInSlaughter: Laughing while having villagers killed is normal for her.
* SheWillComeForMe: Until her death, this was Sae's thought about Yae.
* SlasherSmile: When she isn't laughing, this is her default expression.
* SmokeOut: Generates a red mist around her during battle.
* TogetherInDeath: With Yae in the Promise Ending.
* TurnsRed: In the remake, she can enter Dark Return and glow with a purple aura, making her much faster and more dangerous.
* VirginSacrifice: Sacrificed in a ritual that failed, after her sister didn't return.
* WhiteShirtOfDeath: Dressed in a white kimono, with the cord tied to her left side.
* WomanInWhite: She's dressed in a white kimono, usually stained with blood.
* {{Yandere}}: She ''really, really'' loves her sister.

!!!Voiced By: Jun Hazumi (Japanese), Creator/MichaelBell (English), Nigel Carrington (English, DCB)
[[quoteright:208:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kusabi.png]]

A folklorist who happened to visit Minakami Village at a rather unfortunate time. Joined by his friend, Ryozo Munakata, the two studied the rituals and habits of the village.

Eventually, Seijiro was imprisoned and used as a sacrifice to the Hellish Abyss as part of the Cutting Ritual. When the Repentance occured, he returned as a fully-fledged Kusabi.
----
* ApocalypticLog: Folklorist's Notes and Lazulite stones.
* BadassBookworm: A scholar with the physical and mental strength to withstand the Cutting Ritual and returns as the deadliest ghost in the game.
* CameBackWrong: Partly due to the torture he endured before dying, his Kusabi form has barely any resemblance to how he looked in life.
* ColdBloodedTorture: He was submitted to the Cutting Ritual, which involved cutting and slicing him over and over, torturing him for as long as possible.
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: As part of the Cutting Ritual, Seijiro was thrown into the Hellish Abyss ''while still alive''.
* CuriosityKilledTheCast: His fascination with Minakami Village's hidden rituals brought him there and led to him being sacrificed.
* FinalBoss: He is the default one, except when playing on higher difficulties ([=XBox=]) or fulfilling certain requirements (Wii).
* HealingFactor: The Kusabi regenerates his health on every difficulty, except Easy.
* InSeriesNickname: Folklorist, Scholar, Prisoner or Rope Man.
* MightyGlacier: As the Kusabi, he's actually pretty slow. He moves much faster in III, however.
* NotAfraidToDie: By the time he realized he was going to be sacrificed, Seijiro was actually genuinely excited to be allowed to experience such a secretive ritual first-hand.
* OneHitKill: The Kusabi's touch is deadly. Averted in III, though he gains a new attack to compensate and moves much faster.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: He only has one visible eye, which is a creepy red color.

The Head of the Kurosawa family and Ceremony Master of Minakami Village. He was prepared to sacrifice his own daughters for the good of the village, but was killed by the Repentance when Sae's ritual failed.
----

* ApocalypticLog: Ceremony Master's Notes and Crysocolla stones.
* FlunkyBoss: He summons Priests during his boss battle.

* ApocalypticLog: Village Reports, Bloody Memo and the Sard/Carnellian stone.
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: The Kusabi left him covered in deep gashes and Masumi hid himself in a closet, slowly bleeding to death.
* CuriosityKilledTheCast: His investigation of the village allowed the Kusabi to kill him.
* InSeriesNickname: Unrest In Pieces, The Strangler and The Surveyor.
* KillTheOnesYouLove: His spirit was obsessed with meeting Miyako again, but he was hostile because of the village's curse and he ended up strangling her.

* ApocalypticLog: Lady's Notebook, Red Notebook and Aragonite stone.
* HopeSpot: She was delighted when Masumi returned, but it was nothing more than his cursed spirit and killed her.
* InSeriesNickname: Wanderer.

* ApocalypticLog: Violet Diary, Blue Crystal and Pale Purple Crystal.
* CreepyDoll: The Azami doll, which is lifesized and possessed by an evil spirit.

!!!Voiced by: Creator/JunkoMinagawa (Japanese), Creator/KimberlyBrooks (English)
[[quoteright:204:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/reikurosawa4.png]]

A professional photographer and the protagonist of Fatal Frame III. She lived together with Miku and her boyfriend, Yuu, until he died in a car accident caused by her. Because of this, she gets dragged into the Manor of Sleep, following his ghost.
----
* BeautyMark: She has one beneath her eye.
* ColorCodedForYourConvenience: Blue, the image color of the game and her tattoos.
* DeathSeeker: She repeatedly talks about wanting to be with Yuu, even knowing that following him further into the manor will kill her.
* InformedAttribute: Rei claims she's the opposite of Yuu who was quiet and gentle, but this doesn't really show. Justified; she's severely depressed due to her boyfriend's death.
* ItsAllMyFault: [[spoiler:It is. It was her irresponsible driving that got her boyfriend killed, after all.]]
* JackOfAllStats: Her Camera Obscura is able to equip most of the available lenses and functions, along with having a large capture circle and decent damage.
* MeaningfulName: One of the ways her given name can be read is "zero". The Japanese name for the ''Fatal Frame'' series is "Zero", and the European name for it is "Project Zero". It can also be read as "spirit".
* PleaseDontLeaveMe: [[spoiler:When Yuu's spirit is crossing the Rift with other spirits, she begs to take her with him. He declines, telling her that he'll live on through her.]]
* PsychicLink: With Miku and Kei, allowing her to see their dreams of the manor within her own. [[spoiler: However, as seen with what happens to the two, she has no influence on their decisions.]]
* PsychicPowers: Though they only awaken thanks to the Curse. [[AllThereInTheManual The fifth game]] suggests this is because she's a descendant of shrine maidens.
* ShowerOfAngst: She takes more than one, breaking down in tears.
* SurvivorGuilt: More than anyone.

[[folder: Kei Amakura]]

!!!Voiced by: Yusei Oda (Japanese), Creator/JoshKeaton (English)
[[quoteright:184:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/keiamakura.png]]

Mio's uncle, a non-fiction writer. He was also good friends with Yuu, and writes letter to him during the game which Rei receives. These help her unravel the mystery of the Manor of Sleep. The main reason he is investigating the manor is to save his niece Mio, who fell victim to the Tattoo Curse.
----
* ApocalypticLog: The Research Notes, and his letters to Yuu.
* BadassBookworm: Comes with being one of the series' folklorists who can actually fight off ghosts and not end up one of them. Even then, up until you play his chapters he had no Camera Obscura and had to hide often, hence his ability and special filament. Regardless of how weak his sixth sense is, the man's certainly something to have been sneaking around a haunted manor for so long (the extent of his tattoos show that he's been in the manor the longest out of the three).
** [[spoiler:In the good and [[WordOfGod apparently canon]] ending, he becomes the first male character to survive the game.]]
* CantCatchUp: In a somewhat different way than most examples. Being the only playable man in Fatal Frame III, he's stronger than the girls and so he can move heavy objects they can't. But his sixth sense is said to be weaker than theirs, which results in his attacks being overall inferior, and that's when he has a camera to begin with.
** GradualGrinder: His Camera Obscura though is best used to chip away at a spirit's health with rapid combos and bonuses, as he can't charge it to levels as high as Rei or Miku.
* ColorCodedForYourConvenience: Indigo, if his clothing and tattoos are to go by.
* HopeSpot: [[spoiler:He delivers this for Rei near the end.]]
* IdenticalStranger: To Akito Kashiwagi, Kyouka Kuze's missing lover. As the ghost Brushing Woman, she is not happy to see him. [[spoiler: He also resembles Reika's lover, who is Akito and Kyouka's son, Kaname. This, plus having the Echo Stone Earring in a second playthrough, saves him in the [[WordOfGod canon]] good ending.]]
* MrExposition: Subverted. His chapters are where you usually find the documents that explain the Kuze Family and their rituals, that which lead up to the existence of the Tattoo Curse and the Manor of Sleep.
* MeaningfulName: The character for his name means 'firefly', [[spoiler: referring to the light of hope he has for finding a way to end the curse. However, fireflies are also known for their brief lifespans.]]
* ParentalSubstitute: He's apparently this for Mio and Mayu.
* PocketProtector: [[spoiler: If you obtain Kyouka's Echo Stone Earring on a second playthrough or later, Reika will spare him at the end of Hour XII.]]
* PsychicPowers: He possesses ''very'' weak powers, especially in comparison to Rei and Miku.
* StoneWall: To compensate for his lower damage potential, he has the highest health out of the 3 playable characters.
* TalkingInYourSleep: [[spoiler:He does this when he's staying over at Rei's house, pleading for either his nieces or his close friends Mafuyu and Yuu not to leave him behind.]]

----
* ApocalypticLog: The Tattooed Diaries and the Mirror Shards.
* BarbieDollAnatomy: She's topless, but the tattoos hide any appearance of nipples.
* BreakTheCutie: [[spoiler:The final straw was Kaname being murdered right in front of her.]]
* ColdBloodedTorture: She ''lived'' enduring this until the day of her death...
* DisproportionateRetribution: ... And she unleashed it all back, not only at the Kuze Household, but also those who longed to see their lost loved ones like the worshipers.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Kaname, her lover in life. [[spoiler: Because of this, she spares IdenticalStranger Kei in the Good Ending]].
* FateWorseThanDeath: [[spoiler:For eternity, she must dream of the grief engraved on her so that they won't have to.]]
* FromNobodyToNightmare: Taken to literal extremes.
* InSeriesNickname: Tattooed Priestess.
* KickTheSonOfABitch: Once the reasons for the ritual are revealed, it's hard to feel sorry for her [[AssholeVictim initial victims]].
* LightningBruiser: In battle, she walks fairly fast, can divebomb you from above very quickly, and deals a lot of damage when she attacks.
* {{Miko}}: The priestess of the Kuze Shrine, the Tattooed Priestess.
* MementoMacGuffin: Her Echo Stone Earring, which was a gift from her childhood friend Kaname.
* OneHitKill: Hers is unique in that it becomes a LuckBasedMission where she ambushes you from a random spot. If you end up in front of her... [[GameOver Say good bye.]]
** However, she also has the traditional OneHitKill of the other antagonists in the previous chapters.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: She took her revenge on every single person in the manor, and continues to try to spread her suffering to others.
* SoleSurvivor: Of an avalanche that took out her village and family, hence why she was taken in by the Kuze Manor willingly.
* StoryboardBody: Her body is filled with tattoos, [[spoiler:each and every one of them for the pain of someone else.]]
* TattooedCrook: Literally every inch of her body is covered in tattoos, adding to her frightening appearance.
* TalkingToHerself: Creator/JunkoMinagawa (and Creator/KimberlyBrooks, for the English version) voices both her and Rei.
* TogetherInDeath: [[spoiler: An ugly version at first, with Kaname's corpse at her side while she was unable to look away. After her defeat, Rei breaks the Curse by sending Reika and Kaname to the Other Side together]].
* TraumaCongaLine: Dear lord! In order: She lost her family and village to an avalanche, adopted by another family and forced to endure ColdBloodedTorture until she died during which she finally found love, only to have that love brutally murdered in front of her. Would someone give this poor girl a hug?!
* VirginSacrifice: Sacrified as part of her role as the Tattooed Priestess.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: She's topless, though the tattoos conceal any details.
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: Being forced to watch her lover die, and unable to ever look away from his corpse, drove her to lash out with the Tattooed Curse.

* CantCatchUp: Averted. Unlike Kei, he's every bit as strong as Yuri and Miu, despite being a man.
* ColorCodedForYourConvenience: Black.
* [[DoesNotLikeMen Does Not Like Women]]: Ren is very uneasy when interacting with women, often unable to look them into their eyes while talking to them. The only exception to this is Rui.
* IdenticalGrandson: Ren looks practically identical to Kunihiko Asou.
* PsychicPowers: As part of the Asou family, Ren has inherited a sixth sense.
** {{Psychometry}}: He also has the ability to view a ghost's past, like Yuuri and Miu.
* UnwantedHarem: Ren finds himself desired by several women, both living and deceased. A vision at the House of Joining even includes all of the game's female characters dressed as brides and waiting for him.

The third protagonist of Fatal Frame V, who is desperately searching for her mother, Miku Hinasaki, who left when she was a young child. She was raised by a friend of Miku's. Miu never really knew the love of a parent and feels empty.

Miu heads to Mt Hikami, certain to have sensed her mother's presence.

* PsychicPowers: Inherited powers from her bloodline.

A {{Crossover}} playable character that can be unlocked after completing the main story.
----
* BadassNormal: Ironically, she is brought down to this. Since Ayane has no proper way of fighting the spirits due to her martial arts not working on them and the lack of a Camera Obscura, she is forced to rely on her ninja skills to sneak around and a stun gun to render them helpless for a short while.
* {{Crossover}}: She originates from the ''VideoGame/DeadOrAlive'' series.
* {{Hypocrite}}: She's glad that Tsumugi doesn't hate her sister, despite spending much of her time hating her own.
* InTheHood: Dons a black, short hoodie in her first chapter. Ditches it later.
* MsFanservice: As expected, her figure and [[OfCorsetsSexy clothing]] are rather sexy.
* PetTheDog: She's very kind to Tsumugi, and goes out of her way to save her.
* PowerTattoo: The Shadow Sigil. After failing her first attempt at finding Tsumugi, Ayane gets this so she can actually [[ISeeDeadPeople see the ghosts]] that grabbed her previously.
* SexyBacklessOutfit: The corset that she wears, which gives a glimpse of the spell written across her back.
* StealthBasedMission: Her chapters are mostly composed of this. Ayane merely has a flashlight that can temporarily stun spirits.
* StealthHiBye: Pulls this on Tsumugi during an early cutscene.
* StunGuns: What the Spirit Stone Flashlight essentially is.

[[folder: Ouse Kurosawa]]

!!!Voiced By: Creator/HoukoKuwashima (Japanese)
[[quoteright:187:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ouse.png]]

The main antagonist of Fatal Frame V.

After losing her family to a flood, she gained a strong sixth sense. Eventually, she was chosen to be a Great Pillar for the Black Lake, in order to appease the Shadowspring at Mt Hikami.

However, at the time of her ritual, she saw visions of her fellow shrine maidens being slaughtered and their final moments, along with her own desire to live alongside Asou instead of dying with him, weakened her resolve. Her Black Box opened, the ritual failed and the Black Water was released, leaving Ouse to keep falling within the Lake and becoming a vengeful spirit.
----
* ApocalypticLog: Water-Patterned Journal.
* BodyHorror: The curse has left her looking like a drowned woman with blueish skin, disheveled hair and red eyes.
* DeathSeeker: [[spoiler:Inverted. Ouse secretly desired to ''live'' with Asou, and not die with him, which was one of the reasons her ritual failed.]]
* DyingAlone: [[spoiler:In Yuuri's Good Ending, Ouse accepts it because Yuuri sympathized with her pain and suffering. Ouse manages to fulfill her duty and seal away the Black Water again.]]
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Even in her Cursed state, she shows [[IdenticalGrandson Ren]] kindness and never attempts to harm him.
* FlunkyBoss: During her actual battle.
** When fought underwater, she summons 5-6 Guardians around her, who disperse and attack separately if not defeated quickly. Fortunately said Guardians go down in one hit or two.
** When fought above water surface, she summons some {{Mook}}(s) you've encountered earlier in the story. And Guardian(s), if summoned, emerge out of water to grab you by the ankle before disappearing.
* HopelessBossFight: You ''have'' to escape when encountering her for the first and second time.
* LoveAtFirstSight: [[spoiler:With Kunihiko Asou.]]
* LoveHurts: Her feelings for [[spoiler:Kunihiko Asou]] were so strong that they frightened her and it hurt when he left the mountain. She describes those feelings as being a curse on her. [[spoiler:In one of Ren's endings, his taking a picture of her makes Ouse think that he has rejected her a second time.]]
* OneHitKill: Played straight, if Ouse manages to touch the player when she is chasing them. Averted during her actual battle.
* PsychicPowers: Had them as a shrine maiden, using them to ease the suffering of those committing suicide.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: If you can actually see her red eyes, she's probably close enough to kill you.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Ouse or Ose? The English translation went with Ose, though the Katakana reveal that it is Ouse.
* TogetherInDeath: Ouse's spirit is repeatedly heard calling out for someone to die with her, to ease her suffering as a pillar. [[spoiler:In Yuuri's Bad Ending, she and Yuuri jump off the cliff, appeasing each other's loneliness.]]
* VirginSacrifice: She was chosen to become a Great Pillar. However, her ritual failed and caused the Black Water to overflow and curse the mountain.
* WomanInWhite: In the past, her attire as a shrine maiden. [[spoiler:She reverts to this form in Yuuri's Good Ending.]]
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: She wanders the mountain, desperate to ease her loneliness and pain... but ultimately killing almost everyone she encounters.

----
* ApocalypticLog: Shiragiku's Notebooks.
* ChildhoodMarriagePromise: [[spoiler:Before her ritual, she gave Asou a braid of her hair as a form of promise to come back and become her Yuukon partner. He agreed, but her death traumatized him so badly that he repressed his memories of her.]]
* CreepyChild: Turns into this as a ghost.
* CreepyDoll: She summons these when battling you.

* ForgottenChildhoodFriend: [[spoiler:Of Kunihiko Asou's.]]
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: [[spoiler:In both of her endings, she realizes that she doesn't want Asou to be burdened with the same fate as hers and sends Ren, thinking he is Asou, away to live his life.]]
* IWillWaitForYou: She has been waiting for [[spoiler:Asou]] all this time.
* MysticalWhiteHair: Caused by her albinism, but is seen as a sign of her strong, spiritual powers.
* {{Unperson}}: She was told that she was not really alive or a real person, until she turned 7 years old. At which time, she was going to be turned into a pillar.
* VirginSacrifice: She was turned into a pillar at a young age.

* MentorOccupationalHazard: She goes missing early in the game. [[spoiler:Inverted, as Hisoka always survives.]]
* MyGreatestFailure: When she was looking for Ayumi and finally found the girl, Ayumi threw herself off a cliff. Hisoka feels like she failed her client, and the girl, and wonders if her search for Ayumi drove her to suicide.
* PsychicPowers: She makes a living using hers to help others find items or missing people.
** {{Psychometry}}: Calls it 'Shadow Reading' and teaches Yuuri how to do it.
* TakeMeInstead: Hisoka willingly entered a Black Box[[spoiler:, to protect Yuuri from being turned into a pillar]].

* {{Bifauxnen}}: Shiragiku asks if Rui is a boy or a girl when she first sees her.

* ShesAManInJapan: To an extent, as Rui is never stated to be male or female in Japan, but the English translation opted for female.

* VirginSacrifice: The spirits of the mountain try repeatedly to make her a pillar.

* AxCrazy: After reciprocating the shrine maiden's gaze, he went insane and killed every shrine maiden on the mountain. His spirit continues to kill anyone he encounters.

* TattooedCrook: He covered himself in spells before heading up the mountain.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: Kyozo didn't know that killing the shrine maidens was one of the factors that caused Ouse's ritual to fail, resulting in Mt Hikami being cursed. The fact that he killed the monks that were keeping the holy fire aflame which might at least have slowed down or locally restrict the curse certainly didn't help either.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: What he thought himself to be, when he killed his sister's lover in order to 'protect' her.

[[folder: Shrine Maidens]]

!! Emi, Inori and Honoka Mikomori

They were all slaughtered by Kururugi and their spirits now coax people to their deaths.

[[caption-width-right:296:Marriage and Funeral]]

A pair of old high priestesses that oversaw the rituals at Mt Hikami. One was in charge of performing the post-mortem marriages and the other oversaw the sinking of the boxes into the Shadowspring.

Their spirits continue to perform their duties, calling men to the mountain and marry them off to Ouse or by summoning women to become new Pillars.
----
* ApocalypticLog: Notebook with White Cover (Marriage Celebrant) and Notebook With Black Cover (Funeral Celebrant).
* DualBoss: Their last battle is fought together in the penultimate area.
* HypnotizeThePrincess: Both use mirrors that disorient and manipulate women into entering the Black Boxes as sacrifices.
* TheMatchmaker: The Marriage Celebrant, of course, who takes her duty very seriously. It is her job to find men to call to the mountain and perform a post-mortem marriage to the shrine maidens to be sacrificed. Any man that doesn't make the cut, especially for Ouse, is killed.
* MindControlDevice: The sacred Dark Sun mirrors they hold can hypnotize victims.
* NeverMessWithGranny: Both are very old and some of the most powerful spirits.
* VirginSacrifice: Both of their duties involve performing these on women.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: Their intentions are ultimately good, as the marriages can strengthen the Pillar and the sinking of the Black Box will ultimately purify the Black Lake. But how they get to that is... questionable.
* WomanInWhite: The Marriage Celebrant is dressed in white robes.
