* IdenticalGrandson: Heiji has dark brown skin which he claims is inherited from his grandfather.

** She also is a foil to Momiji Ooka, Heiji's SelfProclaimedLoveInterest. Kazuha is a middle-class ActionGirl with long hair in a ponytail, a dark-blue SailorFuku, rather tomboyish behavior and looks, who doesn't aim to be an AmateurSleuth, who can go from TsunDere to TongueTied regarding Heiji, ''and'' worries a lot for his sake and safety; Momiji, on the other hand, is a [[TheOjou very rich girl]] with shorter hair and no HairDecorations, a white and gray SailorFuku, very GirlyGirl-like mannerisms (i.e. she paints her nails in rather elaborate patterns and wears small earrings), is implied to be an AmateurSleuth, is very vocal about her feelings for Heiji and holds an unyielding faith in his skills and strength. [[spoiler: And both of them know Heiji since childhood.]]

* FinishingEachOthersSentences: With Shinichi/Conan -- whenever they work together in a case they will often finish each other's deductions, demonstrating not only abilities as detectives, but also their familiarity with each other.

** The trailer for the 21th movie shows that Kazuha is proficient in ''[[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uta-garuta hyakunin issha garuta]]'', good enough join school competitions. [[spoiler: Just like her potential love rival, Momiji Ooka.]]

* IdenticalStranger: Downplayed. It's very clear on how to tell him and Shinichi apart due to their different skin colors, hairstyles, and speech patterns. But given the [[OnlySixFaces art style]], they bare a resemblance. And when Heiji attempted to alleive Ran's suspicions of him being Conan by disguisng as Shinichi via putting on make-up, changing his hairstyle and voice pattern, they do look a lot alike; see [[http://www.detectiveconanworld.com/wiki/File:190_heiji_as_shinichi.JPG here]].

* IdiotHero: {{Zig Zagged}}. Heiji has one of the sharpest minds in the series, but he's also HotBlooded and barely conceals Shinichi's secret.

* LovableJock: {{Downplayed}}. He's on his high school's kendo team and is the captain. However, while he's nowhere near being a JerkJock, his arrogant and hot-tempered attitude makes it hard to see his "lovable" side.

* NoSocialSkills: Possibly even worse than Shinichi/Conan's. He once got excited over the prospect of someone being ''dead'', without taking into account the potential feelings of the victims's loved oned or just the proper decency to show someone who has just been ''murdered''.

* ObliviousToLove: Heiji is apparently utterly incapable of realizing his feelings for Kazuha or vice versa; even going so far as to believe the jealousy he felt when she flirted with a magician was just a leader's ''concern'' for his follower. Till the ''Drug Trading Case'', anyway.

* {{Pride}}: As a detective and when talking about Osaka.

* RedBaron: Known as "The Detective of the West".

* TrademarkFavoriteFood: One of the [=OVAs=] shows Heiji really enjoys Okonomiyaki.

* ChivalrousPervert: {{Downplayed}}. Heiji is able to deduct what kind of swimsuits girls are wearing, but that's about as far it goes. He's nowhere near as bad as [[LovableSexManiac Kogoro]].

* CrazyJealousGuy: Like how [[{{Foil}} Shinichi acts towards Ran]], Heiji ''really'' doesn't like it when a guy looks like he has an interest in Kazuha. When this happens, Heiji is unable to concentrate on the case at hand. His jealousy is even worse than [[ClingyJealousGirl Kazuha's jealous moments]]. He doesn't even like it when she talks about another guy (i.e. Kazuha calling Shinichi Kudo "really smart").

* GreenEyedEpiphany: Downplayed. The biggest moments where Heiji expresses concern over Kazuha that isn't platonic is when she is seen with another guy. However, it's still unknown exactly ''how'' Heiji realized his feelings for Kazuha weren't platonic; the seventh movie is a ''possible'' interpretation, but can be considered non-canon.

* MinoredInAssKicking: {{Downplayed}}. He is more hotheaded than the other high school detectives (a fact remarked upon in the series), but he always keeps using his brains, confronting armed killers with his logical conclusions rather than just knocking them out and calling the police. Attack him or his friends, though, and you'll find out just who can beat the entire police kendo club of Oosaka. Or stop a sword with a ''cell phone''.

* SingleTargetSexuality: [[{{Foil}} In a reverse situation from Shinichi and Ran]], it took Heiji a while to realize his romantic feelings for Kazuha. However, even before coming to realize his feelings, Heiji has never shown interest in any other girl.

* TrademarkFavoriteFood: One of the {{OVA}}s shows Heiji really enjoys Okonomiyaki.

* WellDoneSonGuy: {{Implied}}. While their relationship isn't thoroughly explored, Heiji wants to be a detective like his father.

** His relationship with Shinichi/Conan from his end. In Heiji's first appearance has him traveling all the way to Tokyo to challenge Shinichi Kudo to a deduction battle so he could win and show he was the superior detective of the two. After Shinichi solves the case (which included correcting Heiji's wrong assumptions), the Tokyoite detective then gives a short speech to the Osakan that there's no such thing as the superior or inferior detective, only the truth; these words were such an impact on Heiji, he is left both speechless and amazed. Throughout his subsequent appearances (which involved deducing "Conan's" real identity), Heiji may have kept his competitiveness, but he now considers Shinichi/Conan to be his partner and best friend, willing to do anything to ensure his happiness and safety.

* AmateurSleuth: He's even called "The Detective of the West".

* CharacterDevelopment: During the "Bond of Fire" case, Heiji questions Conan if they were right in stopping the culprit from committing suicide, leading to the latter responding that if a detective ''knows'' a criminal is about to commit suicide and does nothing to stop it, then the detective is no better than a murderer. Heiji takes this heart, as evidenced by him stopping the serial murderer in the "Stabbed Wallet" case from committing suicide.
* CharacterTics: He usually wears his cap with its visor pointed backward, but if he feels challenged, he turns the visor forward.

** With Heiji -- Both are 17-year-old TeenGenius {{Amateur Sleuth}}s who have received recognition because of their ability at solving complicated cases [[AwesomenessByAnalysis by using the smallest details from said cases that don't add to the crime scene]]. Both have been known to have an [[InsufferableGenius unpleasant personality]], but [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold also have a srong sense of justice with a heart of gold]]. And partially because of their fame, they have become {{Chick Magnet}}s but [[SingleTargetSexuality only have eyes for]] [[ChildhoodFriendRomance their childhood best friend]]. Other similarities include having an AmbiguousDisorder, and icon of some kind (IconicOutfit for Shinichi as Conan, IconicItem for Heiji), and [[ChronicHeroSyndrome will do anything in their power to stop a murder or suicide from happening]], and funnily enough, their own fathers being faster at deduction than them.

However, there's no denying his strong love for protecting those closest to him and his strong sense of justice is on par with [[TheHero Shinichi/Conan.]]

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Of the {{defrosting ice queen}} variety; she was cold and snippy towards Ran because she thought that the other girl had an interest in Heiji. It's only after Ran, in her own way, explains she has no feelings beyond friendship for Heiji that Kazuha realizes her mistake.

* NiceGirl: Kazuha shows her friendlier and kinder side after her defrosting.

* RunningGag: Cases with Heiji usually involve falling corpses, stock horror monsters (not real ones) or a combination of the two.
* ScarsAreForever:
** Heiji has a scar on the back of his hand where his would-be girlfriend Kazuha [[spoiler:stabbed him with a pen when they were hanging off a cliff, in a desperate attempt to make him let go of her hand... so as to make it more likely he'd make it to the top without the extra weight.
