As a result of his determination to conform to 11th division philosophy, he would rather die than publicly display his true strength. * WorthyOpponent: He loves to fight but struggles to find someone strong enough to give him the kind of battle he craves. When he does find one, he latches onto them as someone he can return to time and again for his idea of "fun". His very first, and most idolised, worthy opponent was a woman called Yachiru whom he named his lieutenant after. After his failure to defeat Ichigo in battle when they first met, he has become obsessed with Ichigo's strength as well. He is so afraid of ending a fight before he's had a chance to enjoy it that he deliberately de-powers himself so that he fights below par. As a result, it takes a very long time for him to achieve his full potential.

* HornedHumanoid: According to the [[AllThereInTheManual databooks]], he's an individual who, just as Mayuri himself has done, will experiment on himself ForScience although what the purpose was of experiment he created horns for isn't revealed.

* LaughablyEvil: His audacious, trollish, even sadistic behavior was played often for comedy and comedic sociopathy during the Hueco Mundo arc. He's mostly calmed down on it, though, following his appearances in the final arc, and he's firmly

* BargainWithHeaven: He should have died at the age of three due to an incurable lung disease. However, his superstitious parents went to the outskirts of the East Rukongai to pray to being that they believed was a god. Mimihagi-sama did not cure Ukitake completely, but did give him both life and the opportunity to become a Soul Reaper. Mimihagi-sama is the right arm of the Soul King, which fell from the sky aeons ago, and who agreed to save Ukitake on the understanding that it would ask for that life back one day. When the Soul King dies, Ukitake summons Mimihagi-sama to complete the bargain; his life is consumed to transform him into the Soul King's Right Hand and stop Soul Society from collapsing.

* ItWasWithYouAllAlong: Most of his goal through the series is to unlock the true power of his Zanpakuto but can never seem to get it to respond or reveal itself to him. In the final arc, he find out it was Yuchiru the entire time who was waiting until he was strong and focused enough to finally wield her power, even at the expense of losing her corporal form. Indeed in the final chapters, he's shown to accept this, knowing she'll be (literally) right be his side forever.

Hikone then begins to panic as he repeatedly gives Hisagi fatal injuries, with each one immediately repairing itself, with Shuhei eventually giving him a short lecture before activating his bankai]].

* EldritchLocation: The realm where his zanpakutou spirit resides is revealed to be one. It's described as having a windmill, under which the grass is perpetually growing healthy and then withering away as the various spokes of the windmill pass above. His Zanpakutou, finally ready to lend Shuhei the full extent of his power, allows him to access the full breadth of his shikai. Suddenly, Shuhei is revived without injuries, and has become nigh-impossible to kill]].
