The spirit of Music/DukeEllington living in the attic
of the ancient ages that accompany children going through puberty.Birch household, where he died. Andrew and Nick often go to him for advice, which he gives with convoluted and bizarre analogies to his life.

* AllegoricalCharacter: They're one for puberty as a whole, and represent the teenager's Id and most base instincts of fighting and screwing.
* AntiMentor: Pretty much every Hormone Monster depicted so far is one of these. While they encourage sexual activity, they also tend to try to push their kids to become juvenile delinquents. Nick, Andrew and Jessi in particular are prone to complain that their Hormone Monsters are more of a hindrance than a help.
* AnythingThatMoves: Most of them find everything sexual and seem to be attracted to all genders. Maurice openly acknowledge he finds tomatoes and sneezes sexy things.
* BigRedDevil: They've all got horns, cloven hooves, tower over the protagonists and a few have either barbed tails or Van Dyke beards. Their sexual appetites and penchant for tempting kids into mischief also add to their devilish natures.
* BlueAndOrangeMorality: Their mentality is driven purely by whatever gives them or their kids pleasure, regardless of the consequences.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Their whole purpose is to lead people to embrace their basic emotions, usually encouraging extreme selfishness and downright immoral behaviour in name of sex, violence or attention. Yet, even they have lines they won't cross, like porn addiction.
** Despite being the main source of gross humor, vulgar language and encouragement of unsavory things that have to do with masturbation, perversion and sex, even they can be grossed out by some things; it's just very hard according to Maurice.
---> '''Maury:''' (''after hearing Andrew's plan to arouse his cousin'') Ugh... I just got chills. You know how hard it is to gross out a hormone monster?
* FatBastard: Maurice and Connie both have noticeably big guts, although Mo's is more of a beer belly while Connie is just curvy.
* HornedHumanoid: Maurice has one horn on the top of his head, while Connie has two.
* InvisibleToAdults:
** Can only be seen by children and a few childlike adults like Coach Steve.
** An episode set in the future has Andrew watching his son talk to a monster that neither him nor the viewer can see.
** Maurie once had a long anti-homophobic rant at Matthew's mother then admitted she didn't hear a word of it.
* LongLived: Maury claims to have come into existence when life first developed on Earth and Connie mentioned they used to live on the ancient continent, Pangaea.
* NotSoImaginaryFriend: It varies, but they seem to be objectively real, or at least real to the ones they are dealing with, with Nick being able to talk with Maurice when he wants to be talked to. Maury is also Matthew's Hormone Monster, demonstrating that Maury works more than one "case" (like a social worker). Caleb is capable of seeing Maurice and Maury knows his name. Similarly, Lola at one point appears to answer to Connie's passionate RousingSpeech with an amen. Later, Connie also becomes Nick's Hormone Monstress in addition to working with Jessi, although she is apparently able to be visible to and interact with them separately even when they are in the same place.
* ThinkingUpPortals: Can open portals between Earth and their Human Resources dimension.
* ToxicFriendInfluence: Zigzagged. Sometimes, they are a grounding presence in the kids' lives, but they also often push them to embrace their nastier instincts, like their hedonistic tendencies, and in Jessi's case even shoplifting.
* UnresolvedSexualTension: If their make out on "Head Pusher" is anything to go by, they still have feelings for each other and are clearly attracted to each other despite their troublesome past. [[spoiler: As seen in the finale, Maurice still has a tattoo of Connie's name on his forearm.]]
* WorkingWithTheEx: Connie and Maurice dated back when Pangaea was still around, but broke up due to issues. They still have to work together as they have to deal with children who are involved with each other, specially in regards to Missy and Andrew's romance.

* AllegoricalCharacter: They're BaitAndSwitch: At one point, he tells Nick the hypothetical scenario of him firing someone from his band for puberty as a whole, being gay, leading the man to commit suicide. Nick is surprised and represent the teenager's Id and most base instincts of fighting and screwing.
* AntiMentor: Pretty much every Hormone Monster depicted so far
viewer is one of these. While led to believe that's something that Duke did. Duke however says it was all hypothetical, because he loved having gay bandmates, as they encourage sexual activity, they also tend attract women that Duke can then flirt with without competition.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Cookiness aside, Duke has proven
to try be a very helpful figure to push their kids Nick and Andrew.
* ConspiracyTheorist: According
to become juvenile delinquents. Nick, him Stevie Wonder faked his blindness and 9/11 was an conspiracy organized by Jews.
* ADayInTheLimelight: The season 3 episode "Duke" is all about how he lost his virginity and became a jazz musician.
* DemotedToExtra: He becomes less involved in season 2.
* {{Expy}}: A smooth black man who gives white boys advice while singing soulfully. Much like [[WesternAnimation/SouthPark Chef]].
* LargeHam: Being a person, or ghost for that matter, who often sings jazz will do that for you.
* MagicalNegro: Gives Nick and occasionally
Andrew guidance.
* TheObiWan: Serves a mentor to the kids.
* OutOfFocus: Gradually becomes this as the series progresses
and Jessi in particular are prone to complain that their the kids interact with an increasing number of Hormone Monsters are more of a hindrance than a help.
* AnythingThatMoves: Most of them find everything sexual
and seem to be attracted to all genders. Maurice openly acknowledge he finds tomatoes and sneezes sexy things.
* BigRedDevil: They've all got horns, cloven hooves, tower over
the protagonists and Shame Wizard, likely due to Jordan Peele's increasingly busy schedule.
* ThePollyanna: For
a few guy stuck in limbo, he's pretty cheerful. Given that he's not damned to haunt a single spot like ghosts in fiction normally do, he's probably not that inconvenienced. Plus he manages to have either barbed tails or Van Dyke beards. Their sexual appetites and penchant for tempting kids into mischief also add to their devilish natures.
* BlueAndOrangeMorality: Their mentality is driven purely by whatever gives them or their kids pleasure, regardless of the consequences.

Another hormone monster who becomes Jessi's guide through puberty. At the end of season 2, she becomes Nick's new hormone monster, despite Nick being a boy.
Missy's self-loathing.

* BigBeautifulWoman: Is noticeably curvaceous and, as the above-image shows, has a rather large butt.
* BridgeBunny: The ''Franchise/StarWars'' parody skit in ''"The Planned Parenthood Show"'' had her filling this role as a parody of Chewbacca.
* DidYouJustFlipOffCthulhu: Shows no fear over the Shame Wizard, shortly after Maurice was stumped by him.
* DramaticIrony: When she finds out Nick likes Jessi, Connie chooses [[spoiler: to leave Nick to only focus on Jessi's needs. But the way Connie handles breaking up with Nick leaves him in a far worse spot than before and almost leads to him being taken over by Nick Starr. Afterwards, Connie makes next-to-no progress with Jessi because of Tito and Depression Kitty, and it didn't get any better until Jessi got outside help. In the long term, Nick was the one who needed the most help, while Connie couldn't even do her job with Jessi properly despite letting go of Nick for it.]]
* ExpressiveHair: When pissed, her hair starts to float and behave like tentacles.
* FieryRedhead: She's extremely feisty and sassy, and more than often exerts this influence over girls, especially Jessi. And at worst, she can be very ill-tempered and impetuous.
* {{Gasshole}}: When she farts, it sounds like smooth jazz and smells (to her) like raw honey (although Nick finds it repulsive).
* GivenNameReveal: "Sugarbush" reveals that she has a surname: [=LaCienega=].
* GuyOnGuyIsHot: When Jessi makes a plan with Matthew to get Aiden and him alone on the former's room so they can make out in peace, Jessi tells him that she won't stay to watch, which prompts Connie to tell her to not negotiate against herself.
* LargeHam: While not as profane as Maurice, she strikes a lot of overly dramatic poses and speaks with the delivery of a fire-and-brimstone preacher.
* MamaBear: Connie shows this attitude to Jessi in season 2 when she gets antagonized by the Shame Wizard and the Depression Kitty. She also acts protective over Nick.
* MoreDeadlyThanTheMale: Her influence on Jessi is arguably more volatile than Maury's is on the boys. In her first appearance, Connie convinced Jessi to act like an unstable brat around her mother with zero provocation. Maury on the other hand hasn't tried to turn Nick and Andrew against their own parents. [[WordOfGod Nick Kroll]] describes Maury as horniness and anger, with Connie being more nuanced and emotional.
* TheNicknamer: Often calls Jessi nicknames. Particularly foods, including Gyoza (Japanese dumplings) and Pupusa (Salvadorian stuffed tortilla). She extends the same treatment to Nick, calling him tortellini (Italian ring-shaped pasta) after she's assigned to him.
* NonStandardCharacterDesign: A subtle one, but she's the only Hormone Monster that doesn't have a tail.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: In the valentine's special, she can only watch with an uncomfortable look as Andrew has a breakdown, calling it "weird-ass toxic masculinity"
* PrehensileHair: She can use her hair to grab and even lift Jessi and has total control over it.
* RousingSpeech:
** She gives one to Jessi in her Bat Mitzvah, when she freezes on the altar as she notices that [[spoiler:her mother is sleeping with her Cantor]]. Connie states that she is a woman now, and she can take what the world throws at her [[ItMakesSenseInContext in her boxy ass dress]].
** She does this again during the [=ASSEs=] when both Nick and Jessi are feeling overwhelmed by pressure during the last day of exams.
* SassyBlackWoman: Carries herself in this manner. Being voiced by Maya Rudolph helps.
* SkewedPriorities: Connie's main shortcoming as Jessi's Hormone Monstress is that she is so focused on encouraging general misbehavior that she doesn't consider whether or not it is actually puberty-related (e.g. shoplifting). This ultimately gets her temporarily taken off Jessi's case by Human Resources.
* SmellsSexy: Jessi mentions she smells great, to which she explains she doesn't use deodorant and only takes bubble baths (pronounced "bubba baffs").
* TookALevelInKindness: After influencing all kinds of bad behavior from Jessi in Season 2, Connie seems to have learned her lesson and starts to become more responsible during Season 3.
* ToxicFriendInfluence: She starts developing into one during Season 2 as Jessi starts to deal with the ramifications of her parents divorcing. This is deconstructed as her influence ends up making Jessi's situation even harder. Thankfully, she manages to get her act together and becomes more responsible in Season 3.
* {{Twincest}}: She was born 69ing her sister, Bonnie.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: In Season 4, Connie [[spoiler: leaves Nick to give her full attention Jessi, who needed her more in that moment. Unfortunately, her leaving Nick when he was dealing with intense anxiety fueled his fear of getting close to others and left him with Rick, who couldn't be any less helpful at the time. This leads Nick to making several poor decisions without proper guidance and almost allows Nick Starr to take over his body in the season finale.]]
* VerbalTic: The way she pronounces her B's, notably the way she says "bubble bath" (or, as some fans spell it, "bubba baff").

Then again, his signs of "age" might actually just come from a rougher life. One possible reason he's aged so badly is that he's been waiting 30 years for Coach Steve to lose his virginity.

** He is the one who manages to get Connie out of her sadness and make her go search for Jessie again. So he is smarter than he looks.

** He gives Steve some good advice and motivating words in occasions. Which is actually impressive.
* MysteriousPast: Not much is known about his past, or why he looks like he looks.
* NiceGuy: While like all hormone monsters he condones violence and perversion, he is overall a friendly, forgiving guy. When Nick tries to kill him, he acts like he is angry for 5 seconds until he says he loves him and does not have an issue with it.
* TookALevelInJerkass: Starts acting strangely menacing and aggressive in season 5, much to Nick's confusion. It's never really explained why, though it might be because Nick has now entered puberty in earnest.

[[caption-width-right:350:''"Now come with me, young man. [[BaitTheDog I'm taking you to that new mac and cheese restaurant.]]"'']]
->'''Voiced By:''' Creator/DavidThewlis

->''That's why I'm here to make it right\\
And to shine a naked light\\
On all the horrid things you do\\
And fill you with SHAME!''

Debuting in Season 2, the Shame Wizard makes teens feel guilty. Is effectively [[Literature/HarryPotter Severus Snape]] in appearance and mannerism.
----
* AntiVillain: By the end of season 2, Andrew admits that shame is a part of life all need to deal with and may teach them to be better people, which is the Wizard's goal. Once the Shame Wizard drops his more villainous traits, he is able to work together with Andrew.
* ArcVillain: He's the driving negative force of Season 2, and all characters start to have to deal with them as their actions call him forth.
* ArchEnemy: He serves as this to Andrew for Season 2. While he enjoy shaming all the kids in, Andrew is the first one that the Shame Wizard shames while Andrew is the one whose afraid of the Shame Wizard the most. Ironically Andrew is one of the first people to befriend The Shame Wizard when he sees his more sympathetic side.
* ArsonMurderAndJaywalking: On top of shaming all the kids over things they shouldn't be ashamed of and savouring the rifts between friends and couples, he also grows to a massive size and blocks the lunar eclipse they were all planning to watch.
* BigBadWannabe: While The Shame Wizard still lingers around inflicting shame on kids after his debut season, he doesn't really reach the menace he had previously as the kids are better prepared on how to handle him and shame
* BreakingTheFourthWall: He talks directly to the audience over the "to be continued" screen at the end of "Dark Side of the Boob".
* BrutalHonesty: While he's very harsh about it, he's not entirely wrong about some of the immoral behavior that he shames and reprimands the kids for, such as Jessi's rebellious streak that got her father in trouble and for Nick bragging about touching Gina's boob just so he could feel like grown up. He even considers himself as like a "harsh, judgmental friend".
* CastingAShadow: The Shame Wizard is able to teleport and manifest himself by using shadows in a given room.
* {{Catchphrase}}: ''"Shaaame..."''
* CollectorOfTheStrange: His hobby is collecting vintage Nazi dildos.
* ColorMotif: While he doesn't wear green, he's connected to the color. Many of his appearances, especially when he is at his most threatening, have the whole show tinted in a green shade. Even the trial he puts Andrew through is in an entirely green court.
* DarkIsEvil: Wears dark robes, has shadow-based abilities, and is the BigBad. Subverted as he turns out to be more of an AntiVillain then outright evil.
* DastardlyWhiplash: Has a pencil-thin moustache, large hooked nose, hunched posture and dark robes.
* DepravedHomosexual: He's a villain who tries to exploit the shame of children, and when Maury calls him out on this in Season 5, they end up making out. His relationship with Steve is also ambiguously romantic.
* DiscOneFinalBoss: Despite being the ArcVillain for most of Season 2, he gets defeated in the penultimate episode allowing Kitty to take over as the FinalBoss.
* DemotedToExtra: He goes from the ArcVillain for Season 2 to only appearing in one {{cameo}} per season in Season 3 and Season 4. He has more appearances in season 5 though.
* TheDreaded: His first appearance makes Maury cower in fear.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: He's a bit disturbed by the racist treatment of Missy's American Girl doll, Maddie, by the company that made her.
-->'''Maddie:''' I'm the only doll that doesn't come with a birthday!\\
'''Shame Wizard:''' What this company has done to you is not right.
* EvilBrit: He has a British accent and thrives off the insecurities of children.
* EvilLaugh: On occasion, he releases a pretty masterful one.
* ExoticEquipment: In Season 5, Maury gets a picture of his dick, which is curved and has a head resembling a wailing spirit. Downplayed, since it at least still resembles a human penis.
* {{Expy}}: Appears to be based on [[Literature/HarryPotter Severus Snape]].
* {{Foil}}:
** To the Hormone Monsters. While the Hormone Monsters represent the teenage Id, the Shame Wizard represents the teenage Superego.
** Coach Steve is this to ''him'', with Steve's utter ''lack'' of shame confounding the Shame Wizard.
* ForeheadOfDoom: He's got a weird eggplant-shaped head with a large amount of space between his hairline and eyebrows.
* FreudianExcuse: He says his obsession with order comes from having to deal with his mother's impossible standards.
* FriendlyEnemy: Despite being the antithesis to the hormone monsters, he's able to converse with them on a casual basis.
* Go-KartingWithBowser: In Season 5, although he still tries to induce shame into their kids, The Shame Wizard is actually on a lot better terms with Maury and Connie, to the point where they accept his presence at their Christmas Party, even if he does leave because of how sad it is.
** In fact, The Shame Wizard and Maury even make out at some point and it's clear that they have no real malice towards each other anymore.
* HiddenDepths: Likes Nazi dildos and did a cover of A Ha's "Take on Me".
* HumanoidAbomination: Not only does his appearance look slightly abnormal (elf ears and sharp teeth), but he can manifest through shadows and create countless doppelgangers of himself.
* InsaneTrollLogic: Much how shame actually works, the Shame Wizard finds ways for people to feel guilty about things they shouldn't or that don't even have any way to be blamed for, which includes making Jessi feel like she was the cause for Trump's election as she was not sufficiently aggressive as a Hillary supporter.
* KnightOfCerebus: The show never had an antagonist or an ArcVillain prior to him coming along, and it shows that the second season, in part thanks to his antics, is much darker.
* ManipulativeBastard: [[spoiler:As the embodiment of shame, he whispers in everyone's ears and makes everyone act against each other's, and their own, best interests.]]
* MismatchedEyes: He has one hazel eye and one blue eye. There is a large scar over the hazel eye, suggesting it may be a replacement.
* MommyIssues: He has a tense, troubled relationship with his mother.
* NecessarilyEvil: Sees himself as this, and is later agreed to be this. Yes, shame might be a bad feeling to have, but feeling shame will teach you to not do something again and without it, as he mentions in his song, humanity could revert to a depraved state of hedonism, which actually happens in the sleepover.
* NotAfraidOfYouAnymore: By the penultimate episode of Season 2, all the kids stand up to him loosing their fear of him in the process. Case in point when Andrew to person most afraid of the Shame Wizard is merely annoyed by The Shame Wizard in his subsequent appearances.
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: Season 5 proved that the Shame Wizard can still be a threat to the children where his body shaming causes many to multi-late their bodies.
* ParentalAbandonment: [[spoiler:His father abandoned him, leading to severe issues in his adult life.]]
* PetTheDog:
** He develops a friendship with Coach Steve, and keeps the drawing he made framed in his office.
** During his trial of Andrew, he allows a witness, [[ItMakesSenseInContext who is a sock]] to smoke on the stand out of sympathy for what it went through with Andrew.
** He also appears to have some sympathy for Jessi's father, though he uses it to make Jessi feel guilty about shoplifting.
* PoliticallyIncorrectVillain: He makes Matthew feel insecure about his sexuality by using petty gay slurs, though it's not clear if he's genuinely bigoted or just saying these things to push Matthew's buttons.
* PunchClockVillain: Yes, he exists to spread shame and guilt, but as pointed out in AntiVillain above, shame is a part of life that everyone deals with and can help teach people how to be better. When he isn't doing his job, he's actually on pretty friendly terms with the hormone monsters.
* SureLetsGoWithThat: In his sole appearance in season 3, he Spots Andrew at a MGTOW gathering and tries to shame him upon seeing his realization that they're not good people, but it's clear he was really there to buy Nazi dildos.
* TragicVillain: Actually, he is this. Despite him seeming harsh and unforgivable, he actually has a sweeter and nicer side. His worst traits come from a sad childhood, when his dad abandoned him and his mother made him feel weird about himself for something she asked him to do. He has a hard job, that is making people feel ashamed or guilty to make them be better and avoid catastrophic consequences of people without shame. He is also hushed by his co-workers, who fear his worst traits, which makes him feel sad and alone.
* VillainDecay: He went from being the BigBad feared by all for much of season 2 to being merely considered an annoying nuisance in season 2's finale and the beginning of season 3. He gets his mojo back in season 5.
* VillainHasAPoint: Although he takes things too far, he's right that an unrepentant human race devoid of guilt would not be a good thing. At the end of Season 5, [[spoiler:he makes Jessi feel an appropriate amount of shame for how rudely she treated Missy, which gets Jessi to apologize]].
* VillainSong: He gets a show-stopper in "Dark Side of the Boob". He gets another song in the season 5 episode "The Rise of Shane Lizard," celebrating body insecurities.
* VillainyFreeVillain: Despite being a major antagonist, he never actually does anything horrific. All the bad stuff that happens to the kids is usually through either their own or each other's bad choices. The Shame Wizard just gloats in their faces.

!Jessi's Department
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jessisdepartment.jpg]]
%% [[caption-width-right:350:some caption text]]

->'''Voiced By:''' Natasha Lyonne (Intellect Sphinx), Joe Wengert (Ambition Gremlin), Neil Casey ([=DNApe=])

A collection of fantasy beings who are focused on Jessi's development.
----
* AllegoricalCharacter: As stated above, they represent the various facets of human beings.
%% * {{Expy}}: They are definitely inspired by the emotions in ''WesternAnimation/InsideOut''.
* FiveManBand:
** TheBigGuy: [=DNApe=], not just because he's a gorilla, but because he's also the most hot-headed.
** TheChick: Anxiety Armadillo manages Jessi's emotions.
** TheLancer: Connie apparently fills this role, working with Jessi's hormonal development over her mental development.
** TheLeader: Intellect Sphinx is apparently the head of the board meeting concerning Jessi.
** TheSmartGuy: Ambition Gremlin thinks about the big picture.
* LargeHam: [=DNApe=] doesn't take kindly knowing that Jessi's pedigree is being wasted on impulsive decisions that could hurt her in the long-term.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: Intellect Sphinx's decision to have the Depression Kitty take over as Jessi's new primary creature nearly leads to Jessi getting trapped in the Human Resources realm forever.
* TheVoiceless: Anxiety Armadillo doesn't talk.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Depression Kitty]]
!!Kitty Beaumont Bouchet
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kitty_9.png]]
->'''Voiced By:''' Creator/JeanSmart

A creature from the depression department. She has been an outside consultant in Jessi's case, and tries to take over Jessi's guidance when she and Connie have a fallout.
----
* AllegoricalCharacter: Of depression. She isolates Jessi from her friends and family and tries to keep her in a constant state of lazy indisposition. Even when she is defeated, Jessi still admits she needs to see a therapist.
* {{Archenemy}}: To Jessi. So far Kitty hasn't interacted with the other kids and seems only interested in depressing Jessi, while Jessi doesn't want Kitty to control her life.
* ArcVillain: Of Jessie's character arc.
* BigBadDuumvirate: Works together with Tito in Season 4 in her efforts to plague Jessi with negative emotion.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: She shows up as disarming and even somewhat pleasant and friendly, but once that Jessi is under her thumb, she shows herself controlling and very antagonistic.
* TheBusCameBack: She appears in a later episode of season 3, when Jessi feels overwhelmed by the pressure of national exams and her mother. When her father gives her some support and talks with her mother, she leaves again.
* CatsAreMean: Doesn't get any meaner than basically trying to drive someone to suicide.
* EvilDuo: Is part of one with Tito.
* FauxAffablyEvil: She wants to keep Jessi broken and weak, but does conventionally affectionate things like snuggling and speaking in a tender voice.
* FinalBoss: She is the last threat faced in Season 2, well after the Shame Wizard had become weaker and sympathetic.
* {{Foil}}: To the Shame Wizard, who was the ArcVillain for most of Season 2, Kitty was introduced right at the end and serves as a sort of FinalBoss for the same season. Whereas the Wizard starts as a fully evil and antagonistic being, he ends as a sort of AntiVillain that not only has a sympathetic backstory and understandable motives but is ultimately able to befriend both Andrew and Maurice, Kitty is much more apparently nice and pleasant, her suggestions to Jessi make her feel instantly comfortable, but she is much more devious, wanting Jessi to lose connection to her friends, family and goals and instate depression on her, and all the kids and monsters run away from her, as Jessi seeks help in therapy to get rid of her fully.
* KnightOfCerebus: Like the Shame Wizard, every one of her appearances makes the show darker.
* PlatonicLifePartners: With Tito.
* SecondaryColorNemesis: Has purple fur.
* ShoutOut: Bears a striking resemblance to the Cheshire Cat from ''WesternAnimation/AliceInWonderland'', specifically it's Disney's incarnation, down to a similar color palette and fur pattern. As well as the way she first approaches Jessi: suddenly appearing behind her.
* SoftSpokenSadist: Kitty speaks with a soft soothing voice which barely hides her malicious intents for Jessie
* VillainousFriendship: [[spoiler:In Season 4, she and Tito The Anxiety Mosquito are quite chummy and close, even taking pleasure in working together to emotionally cripple Jessi. Which makes sense given the connection between Depression and Anxiety.]]

[[folder:Menopause Banshee]]
!!Menopause Banshee

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bm_banshee.png]]

->'''Voiced By:''' Carol Kane

The embodiment of menopause. She appears to haunt Barbara and warn her that her menopause is coming.
----
* AmbiguouslyEvil: She torments Andrew's mother, but at the same time tells her she can now have unprotected sex without consequence, and that this chapter of her life is hers to live. Then she tells her that Andrew is lusting after his cousin. Barbara can also summon her powers when they are trying to run away from Florida. It's hinted that, much like many other supernatural beings, she's neither good nor bad, just another part of life.
* MakeMeWannaShout: Like most banshees, she seems to have powers of making powerful screams. Barbara can use it to part a huge wave.
* MyBiologicalClockIsTicking: Appears before Andrew's mother to signify her transition into her Autumn years.
* OurBansheesAreLouder: Has a crone's laugh.
* RhymesOnADime: Speaks in rhymes.
* ScaryTeeth: Her dentures are all elongated canines.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tito the Anxiety Mosquito]]
!!Tito Taylor Thomas the Anxiety Mosquito

->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/MariaBamford

The personification of anxiety.
----
* AllegoricalCharacter: Of anxiety. She tells the main group about their insecurities of the world, whether they're rational or not, and induce nervousness, and for Nick, panic attacks. She also has a long history of working with the Depression Kitty, as depression and anxiety are often linked together.
* AlliterativeName: Her full name is "Tito Taylor Thomas".
* AmbiguousGender: While her voice actress is a woman and she speaks in a higher-pitched, more feminine voice, Tito lacks any real secondary sexual characteristics to indicate her gender. Further, neither her first name (typically masculine) and her middle name (gender neutral) are particularly feminine enough to pin down her gender based on name alone.
* AmbiguouslyEvil: She overwhelms the kids with unpleasant and terrifying thoughts that prevent them from functioning properly and makes them increasingly on edge, but she tends to say that he does this so they can protect themselves. Although the methods are ''far'' from ideal, she doesn't seem to have malicious thoughts aside from being extremely overbearing and feeding upon their insecurities.
* ArcVillain: She serves as this for Season 4, where he plagues everyone with anxiety throughout the season.
%% * BigBadDuumvirate: Is part of one with the Depression Kitty for Jessi's character arc.
%% * EvilDuo: Is part of one with Kitty.
* GenderBlenderName: "Tito" is a stereotypically masculine name.
* NervousWreck: Due to being the personification of anxiety, she can induce this upon the kids she's around, even biting them to induce more anxious thoughts, and even sends Nick into a few panic attacks throughout Season 4.
%% * PlatonicLifePartners: With Kitty.
* SelfDuplication: She can duplicate into a whole swarm of herself, as a representation of many anxious thoughts piling up on one another.

[[folder:Gratitoad]]
!!Gratitoad
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/ZachGalifianakis
The personification of gratitude. Possibly inspired by Jessi's therapist's toad obsession.
----
* ArchEnemy: For Tito given their respective roles of being the BigGood and BigBad for Season 4, along with the Graditoad constantly trying to eat Tito.
* BigGood: He serves as one for Season 4 as he gives the kids courage to fend off anxiety.
* NiceGuy: He ultimately helps Jessi feel better about her life, and shrinks both Depression Kitty and Tito.
* ThePollyanna: Puts a positive spin on nearly everything. For example, among the things he's grateful for is that the threat of his predators pushes him to jump higher, because all that exercise is good for toning his butt.
* PositiveFriendInfluence: His presence allows the kids to feel good about themselves.
* RhymesOnADime: He does some rhyming mantras to help Jessi practice her gratitude.

[[folder:Walter]]
!!Walter
-->'''Voiced by:''' Brandon Kyle Goodman
A giddy Love Bug who is assigned to Nick and soon becomes a Hate Worm.
----
* BigBadEnsemble: Shares the role of main antagonist with Rochelle for season 5, given that they are both Hate Worms.
* DeconstructedCharacterArchetype: WideEyedIdealist. As a Love Bug, he is very easily excitable about love. When Jessi humiliates Nick, he is so emotional about it that he becomes a Hate Worm and gains a nasty personality. However, he manages to become an idealist again in the season 5 finale as well as a Love Bug again.
* {{Foil}}: To Sonya in terms of how to handle Love. Walter encourages Nick to be as direct as possible when showing romance while Sonya seems to understand that romance takes a little patience.
* FourEyesZeroSoul: He retains his glasses when turning into a Hate Worm.
* JerkassHasAPoint: He calls out Nick's NeverMyFault moment in the season finale when he blames Walter for everything bad happening, which is the only right thing he has done.
* PowerOfHate: Nick's newfound hatred of Jessi has transformed Walter from a Love Bug into a Hate Worm.
* ProtagonistJourneyToVillain: He was a NiceGuy Love Bug for three episodes, but becomes a Hate Worm after Nick deals with fatal blows to his crush on Jessi. Since the, he's been encouraging Nick to be as hateful as possible. He manages to go back to normal in the season 5 finale.
%% * WideEyedIdealist: Basically his prime character trait, which gets {{deconstructed}}.

A professional Love Bug assigned to Jessi.

* WomenAreWiser: She seems to be more professional at being a Love Bug than Walter is.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Rochelle]]
-->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/KekePalmer
A sassy Hate Worm who teaches Missy to be hateful.
----
* BigBadEnsemble: Shares the role of main antagonist with Walter for season 5, given that they are both Hate Worms.
* TheCorrupter: She intentionally corrupts Missy into becoming for rude and hateful.
* EvilerThanThou: Proves to be this to the Shame Wizard after casting him out when he tried to shame Missy.
* PowerOfLove: Missy's compassion and kindness has transformed Sonya from a Hate Worm into a Love Bug.
* SassyBlackWoman: She speaks like this, justified since she's voiced by a Black actress.
* ToxicFriendInfluence: Her hateful influence causes Missy to encourage bad behavior, like slandering Jessi and Ali on the internet.

!!Self-Harm Walrus
The personification of SelfHarm, only mentioned by Connie in Season 4.
----
* TheDreaded: Understandably. Immediately after [[WhamLine mentioning it]], Connie stutteringly pivots away from the subject, only asking Jessie to call her if she sees him.
* TheGhost: Only mentioned once in season 4.
* WilyWalrus: To put it ''mildly'', since it's a walrus that personifies ''self-freakin'-harm''.

----
* FreudianExcuseIsNoExcuse: Makes it very clear that no matter what personal issues you have, they're yours to deal with, and blaming the rest of the world for your problems will just make you more miserable. When all you're putting out is hate, hate is all you'll get back.
* IHatePastMe: Has little sympathy for his younger self, calling him out for his selfishness and NeverMyFault attitude.
* RogerRabbitEffect: Appears as his real live-action self in the animated world he created.
* TeenyWeenie: Since he's the adult version of Nick, he lived through the same penis-related angst his younger self is currently dealing with, and gives him the unfortunate news that he's still only going to be average one day.

The spirit of Music/DukeEllington living in the attic of the Birch household, where he died. Andrew and Nick often go to him for advice, which he gives with convoluted and bizarre analogies to his life.
----
* BaitAndSwitch: At one point, he tells Nick the hypothetical scenario of him firing someone from his band for being gay, leading the man to commit suicide. Nick is surprised and the viewer is led to believe that's something that Duke did. Duke however says it was all hypothetical, because he loved having gay bandmates, as they attract women that Duke can then flirt with without competition.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Cookiness aside, Duke has proven to be a very helpful figure to Nick and Andrew.
* ConspiracyTheorist: According to him Stevie Wonder faked his blindness and 9/11 was an conspiracy organized by Jews.
* MagicalNegro: Gives Nick and occasionally Andrew guidance.
* TheObiWan: Serves a mentor to the kids.
* OutOfFocus: Gradually becomes this as the series progresses and the kids interact with an increasing number of Hormone Monsters and the Shame Wizard, likely due to Jordan Peele's increasingly busy schedule.
* ThePollyanna: For a guy stuck in limbo, he's pretty cheerful. Given that he's not damned to haunt a single spot like ghosts in fiction normally do, he's probably not that inconvenienced. Plus he manages to have hang out sessions with other ghosts of dead celebrities, including (but not limited to), Music/{{Prince}}, Music/DavidBowie, Music/FreddieMercury, and Music/WhitneyHouston.

* ImMelting: What initially happens when Missy finally overcomes her self-loathing. She gets better.
* InTheHood: She initially wears a cheap hoodie, but her outfit later takes on elements of the dark side.

* CelebCrush: Naturally, but it goes a bit beyond that. Though Missy's hormone monster is ''also'' supposed to be Mona, Nathan Fillion fills in a kind of pseudo-Hormone Monster role to distinguish her more from Jessi.
* CompositeCharacter: Missy pictures him as a cross between Mal from Series/{{Firefly}} and Series/{{Castle}}.
