* IAmXSonOfY: A variation. Pe'khdar don't have surnames in the usual sense and instead identify themselves by clan.

* HeightAngst: Downplayed. Eleya mentions in chapter three that she usually feels awkward on a dance floor since she tends to tower over her partner. In this case, though, her dance partner Gaarra is actually a few centimeters taller.

The Flag Officer-in-Command of the Marduk Carrier Battle Group. A joined Trill and a heavily decorated veteran of the Dominion War.

* GrumpyOldMan: Gender-flipped. She's a lot less MildlyMilitary than most of the cast and doesn't put up with much in the way of antics, even glaring at her flag captain for showing up late to the briefing.

During the Borg attack at Vega Colony Eleya was sent over to the USS ''Khitomer'' to help repel boarders and get the ship repaired. Upon her return she discovered to her horror that the Borg had killed or assimilated the ship's entire command staff, leaving her, as the seniormost ensign afloat, the acting captain. She took command and helped get most of the fleet to safety. Two years and a meteoric rise through the ranks later, she's the captain of the USS ''Bajor''.

* FantasticRacism: Due in large part to the events of the ''Kira'' boarding action she has a tendency to use the racial slur "greenskins" in reference to Orions. She also alludes in one chapter to a dislike of Cardassians, something that's fairly common among Bajorans due to the atrocities they suffered during the Cardassian Occupation.

* FantasticRacism: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. She takes an irrational dislike to Orions in general due to the incident on the ''Kira'', but she can accept individual Orions if they prove themselves worthy of it. Like many Bajorans she also dislikes Cardassians.

The Trill symbiote named Riyannis has had an unremarkable past for the most part, although one previous host served as transporter chief aboard the USS ''Constellation'' in the 2340s. Birail was implanted with Riyannis in 2397 while interning at the Trill Science Ministry. She applied to Starfleet Academy two years later on sciences track and graduated in 2405. She spent the next year in the exobiology lab of the ''Saber''-class starship USS ''Garvey'' before being made Science Officer of the USS ''Kagoshima''.

Commander Tesjha "Tess" Phohl, formerly second shift projectile weapons officer on the USS ''Khitomer'', was sent back over to the ''Kagoshima'' with Eleya to be her temporary tactical officer. After the ''Kagoshima'' was able to save much of the fleet Starfleet Command made Tess's transfer permanent along with Eleya's command. Eleya made her the XO in addition to her post as tactical officer, and brought Tess along with her in
