In 1989, twenty years after the ''Anime/LupinIIIPilotFilm'' and four years after ''Anime/LegendOfTheGoldOfBabylon'' was released in theaters, NTV aired ''Anime/LupinIIIByeByeLibertyCrisis'' on April 1st. Since that time, Creator/TMSEntertainment has made an effort to have a new Lupin III MadeForTVMovie produced every year.

Watching these specials is a trip through Anime animation history itself; the art is usually shared with other anime studios, and often follows whatever art style trend that studio is currently using. DependingOnTheArtist has affected Fujiko the most, but none of the cast is immune to the effect. Because Lupin is a franchise beloved by Japan, the specials are usually kept more to the kid-friendly {{Shonen}} genre, rather than the true-to-source {{Seinen}} genre. A fan observation is that if Lupin's shirt is Black, character deaths will involve {{Gorn}}. But if his shirt is Blue, a DisneyVillainDeath is most likely.

On April 1, 1989, twenty years after the ''Anime/LupinIIIPilotFilm'' was released and four years after ~~''Anime/LegendOfTheGoldOfBabylon'' was released in theaters,~~ ''Babylon'' hit cinemas, NTV aired ~~''Anime/LupinIIIByeByeLibertyCrisis'' on April 1st.~~ ''[[Anime/LupinIIIByeByeLibertyCrisis Bye Bye Liberty Crisis]]'', a 97-minute MadeForTVMovie. Featuring the return of the original music composer and voice cast, it was a big hit. Since ~~that time, Creator/TMSEntertainment~~ then, TMS has made an effort to have a new ~~Lupin III MadeForTVMovie~~ ''Lupin III'' special produced every ~~year.~~

Watching these specials is something of a trip through ~~Anime~~ Japan's recent animation ~~history itself;~~ history. Unlike the ~~art~~ old TV series, TMS does not make these specials in-house. Animation is ~~usually shared with~~ typically handled by other ~~anime~~ studios, ~~and~~ who often ~~follows~~ adapt the ''Lupin'' house style to whatever ~~art style~~ artistic trend that studio is currently using. DependingOnTheArtist is the rule rather than the exception here. As a result, many of these specials look wildly different from each other. This trend has affected Fujiko the most, of course, but none of the cast is immune to its effects. The animation quality, while ''far'' higher than any of the ~~effect. Because Lupin is a franchise beloved by Japan, the~~ TV series, also varies from special to special.

In terms of content, these specials largely tread a middle ground – although they are ~~usually kept~~ certainly more ~~to the~~ kid-friendly than Monkey Punch's extremely violent and raunchy manga, they are nonetheless a fair bit darker than ''[[Anime/LupinIIIRedJacket "Red Jacket"]]'', or especially ''[[Anime/LupinIIIPinkJacket "Pink Jacket"]]''. Still, because ''Lupin'' remains a beloved franchise in Japan, and these specials air in Japanese prime time, they usually stay at least nominally {{Shonen}} ~~genre,~~ for families rather than ~~the~~ going for a more true-to-source ~~{{Seinen}} genre. Many of these specials have found their way into the Western Market. Creator/{{Funimation}} licensed and dubbed eight of them – from ''Voyage To Danger'' to ''Missed By A Dollar'' – which they released in the early/mid 2000's, though they are now long out-of-print. Creator/{{Discotek|Media}} has picked up several specials from both before and after Funimation's block. [[GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff Italy]] has released a large number of them as well, but even they do not have all of them.
