* BrutalHonesty: Smollett's dossier says that he "likes to tell the truth in the eye, and suffers for it".

* IronButtMonkey: Smollett. He's not as much dumbed down in the adaptation as it would seem, and retains most of his dialogue from the book, only with his temper greatly exaggerated. It's just a lot of unfortunate stuff tends to happen to him, especially in action scenes. However, he's cartoonishly tough and just brushes all of it off, suffering a messed wig at most.

* Captain Smollett had NoIndoorVoice and could be bumbling, but he was undeniably courageous, and he did well enough as a captain to rally his allies together. In the English dub, his lines often have a cowardly undertone to them, coming across as him really being afraid of what's happening, but he won't admit it.

Added DiffLines:

* DubPersonalityChange:
** In the original, Livesey has an exuberant personality, with his words always carrying either a tone of joy or confidence and often laughing so hard that he gasps for breath, whereas in the English dub, his delivery is much more reserved, having a more soft-spoken stereotypical posh accent, and he chuckles quietly through his teeth, which makes him come across as sneaky.

* ActorAllusion: Captain Smollett's voice actor, Viktor Adrienko, had previously done the exact same unique speech patterns (over-enunciating the 'p's along with a sort of lisp) for David Cherkassky's previous TV project, Doctor Aybolit, where he played an antagonist crocodile who ate the sun.

** Averted at first with this movie's version of Black Dog who disappeared from the book after his confrontation with Billy Bones, as he appears later as a member of Silver's crew, but with no further lines of dialogue, and it raises the question of why Jim didn't recognize him on the boat and figure something was up even before he overheard the pirates' mutiny. It's eventually played straight as Black Dog eventually stops showing up, and it's possible his appearances as part of the crew were just the animators reusing his character design for an extra.

* SparedByTheAdaptation: In the last shots of the movie, Israel Hands is seen still clinging to the rope holding the masts of the Hispanola together. Amusingly, this is also a subversion of a DeathByAdaptation he suffers in the book, since the real, historical Hands actually survived his pirate career, retired and died as a penniless beggar in England.

Oddly, Jim still tells Silver that he killed Hands after their initial confrontation.

* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Perhaps the only point when Livesey loses his trademark grin is when Trelawny, upon meeting Silver, flat out tells him that they're after Flint's treasures (and that's not long after Livesey warned him against doing exactly that). The doctor gives Jim a very worried look, with "What is this moron doing?!" practically written on his face, before resigning and putting the smile back up again. He does it again when Smollett is talking to John Silver.
