I really have to say that I think the Genma Saotome and Mr. Fujinami examples should be flipped (Genma from Type IV to Type III, Fujinami from III to IV), or at least should both be Type IV, and expanded upon.

Both fathers are incredibly selfish jerks. However, I really would struggle to describe Mr. Fujinami as remotely more sympathetic or likeable than Genma.

  • Mr. Fujinami routinely berates and physically beats his daughter for refusing to go along with his pretense that she is a man. He enrolled her as a boy in her new high school and pushed the principal to make her attend the boy's PE class, where she was nearly molested by the massed perverts. Whenever she tries to acquire female clothes, he steals them from her and destroys them. He repeatedly deceives her, makes promises to her that he goes back on, and lies to her for his own amusement. He steals the chocolates she gets for Valentine's Day (having lied to her for years that chocolate was a deadly poison so he wouldn't have to share it with her), regularly steals her food, and even drugs her. His only marginally sympathetic trait is that he's still deeply in love with Ryuunosuke's Missing Mom, and the inference is raised that she might not be dead but just ran out on him for being a lunatic.

  • Genma Saotome took his son away from his mother at a young age to make him a great martial artist, swearing a pledge to his wife Nodoka that he would make Ranma a "man among men" or they'd both commit seppuku. He is casually verbally abusive to Ranma, although ironically he's less physically abusive than Fujinami was. He would regularly steal Ranma's food when he was little, and still does it in canon, and he infamously put Ranma through Training from Hell that left Ranma with a lifelong terror of cats. He caused Ranma to get his Gender Bender curse, and engaged Ranma to the tsundere Akane Tendo. Their relationship is so bad that when Genma decided he needed to invent a new technique to be able to beat Ranma, he weaponized hugging his son with the Cradle from Hell. In the series' grand finale, he steals Ranma's curse, inadvertently leading it to being destroyed. But for all his faults, he does ultimately care about Ranma being happy, and he can sometimes try to be a decent father... it's just he's a super-selfish Bumbling Dad, so of course he does very bad at it.

Live Action TV

  • Giving a character Abusive Parents usually doesn't make the Fandom more sympathetic if they helped Ship Sinking their OTP in this day and age. Then there came Adalind Schade. And her mom, Catherine Schade. She seemed to care for her daughter... between two stances of flirting with Renard, the guy Adalind loved and worked for, despite the fact that he was ready to sacrifice her at the first opportunity, and whom she encouraged her to pursue, because, you know, Ambition Is Evil. All together, now : POOR ADALIND !

This is full of sinkholes, the part about Ship Sinking is completely irrelevant, and the author neglected to even mention that the example was from Grimm. I'm putting it here so that the relevant Potholes can be chosen appropriately, and the name of the work can be edited in. I'd do it myself, but I don't know which of the potholes are important to keep.

What happened to type V ? There seems to have been a re-scaling or something, but several entries still refer to a type V when the scale appears to end at type IV (including a few type IV that say "this should be a type V"... CONFUSING) What am I missing ?
