When Sailor Moon originally aired in the U.S., it didn't quite catch on with the young female demographic it was intended for despite "well-intended" edits and it was soon canceled. A huge Internet petition campaign (Save Our Sailors) quickly cropped up to have the show put back on the air, at which point the executives started to notice a huge amount of its fandom was male. Indeed, even in its country of origin its slightly less unexpected popularity with boys probably explains the show's incredibly long run.
I deleted this:
Save Our Sailors was a joke (I was around fandom at the time) and there's no reason to believe it was noticed by executives.
Most of the problem with Sailor Moon in the US was caused by bad timeslots, which is why it did significantly better on Canada being on a national network at a better time.
The show's "long run" has already been beaten out by Pretty Cure, even though that doesn't have as much of a male audience.

This is technically a YMMV item, but the last folder cites a number of works where this is actually used as a device in a story. (And yes, I'm the one who added UHF.) Do we even have guidelines when a YMMV article itself gets referenced and used in a story?
