Here is the million dollar question: Is Yuma a Henshin Hero or a Magical Boy as ZEXAL?
I mean, there is an argument for both: The show is based on a magical girl series and Yuma and Kaito have a dynamic similar to a typical Magical Girl and a Dark Magical Girl.
In the other hand, the transformation reminded me of Kamen Rider Double and the show itself inspired Kamen Rider Fourze (or so some people think).
So? Any ideas?

- Protagonist-Centred Morality: Tokunosuke makes fake Heart Pieces out of candy and trades them with an innocent bystander for the real thing, then makes up the difference in numbers with more fake pieces in an attempt to make the second round. Why does he escape being expelled from the tournament for life? Yuma, his friend, jumps in and champions his cause, regardless of the punishment both being appropriate for the crime and sounding rather similar to the one used in real-life tournaments.
- Averted in the dub where they threw in an extra line about banishing the kid from the city as well as the tournament, thus making Yuma's defense of his friend much more understandable.
Look, i believe this is a correct example, but this example not explains the corrects reasons "why". (Protagonist centered morality is about a double standard of the form as the protagonists are treated in relation to secondary characters)

Am I the only one who notices the X in Zexal looks just like Roxas' necklace in Kingdom Hearts? What would we put that under?

So, do we have a good reason why Yuma is no good at dueling, or are we just supposed to suffer through his complete ineptitude when he's the main and probably needs to learn not to play the cards like a damn fool? Part of the show's appeal was the fact that the heroes we had were somewhat good at the game, or got better over time. Yuma does neither.
