And now, tyrannosaurs! That are also dragons!

Tyrunt Line

Morphs [Oak Catalogue #]

  • Tyrunt [# 696]
  • Tyrantrum [# 697]

Physical Description

Tyrunt and Tyrantrum (Tyrannus regali) are both tyrannosaurid theropod Pokemon with rocky skin interspersed with feathers, serrated teeth, and large heads.

Tyrunt is around a meter tall at the shoulder, and has a solid brown hide with a ruff of white feathers around its neck. It has plated knees, large feet, small, stubby arms, and a proportionally large head. Its upper teeth, in contrast to its lower teeth, seem to be extensions of the jaw. It has large, black eyes, two orange horns on its head, and a matching spike on its tail.

Tyrantrum is around two and a half meters tall at the shoulder, with reddish hide and orange markings. Its body is covered in armor plates (an early form of protective Draconic hide), and its neck feathers are longer and more prominent, for display. It has a feather “beard” on its jaw, as well, also for display. Its claws are larger, both on its forelimbs and legs, and obsidian black. Its teeth are more numerous, and it now has spikes resembling a crown over its eyes, as well as additional spikes on its tail forming a thagomizer.

Rare alternate colorations exist, with the hide being blue and the horns and tail spikes being silver. They are highly sought after by Trainers and Breeders, but scientists are still deciphering the cause.

Notable Biology

Tyrunt line members are typically seen using either attacks that involve rocks - such as avalanches and pointed stones, as well as their own rock-like heads- and energy akin to that used by other Dragons, usually infusing their claws or tail. They can also infuse their bites with dark energy, charm opponents, cause seismic tremors, use their head crest as a drill, charge their claws with Aura for quick blows, perform acrobatic maneuvers, and fire pulses of dark energy.

When bred with other Pokemon, Tyrunt line members can also infuse their teeth with fire, ice, and lightning, as well as venom, due to a primitive omnisac being more developed in such individuals. They can also inherit a sort of dance that helps draw out internal power by flexing certain muscles, as well as a similar motion that increases power and resilience but slows movement.

There are two strains to this line. The more common one has thicker, more powerful jaw muscles, increasing the power of the Pokemon’s bites. The second, rarer strain has reinforced skulls instead, allowing for powerful strikes without recoil.

Tyrunt line members have incredible hearing, sight, and smell. A Tyrantrum can see objects up to 6 kilometers away, surpassing most modern Pokemon. The sense of smell is similarly powerful, and helps this line find carcasses or wounded prey. Hearing is best in the low-frequency range, and most communication between these Pokemon occurs in said range.

Members of this line are also known for their jaw strength, especially those of the jaw-reinforced strain. Scientists studying such individuals calculated a bite force of around 183000 to 235000 newtons or 18.3 to 23.5 metric tons, AKA enough force to break through ten layers of Larion hide.

Tyrantrum’s feathers have multiple uses- As well as being status symbols, the “beard” feathers are also used as whiskers, and females shed feathers to line their nests. The condition of the feathers increases with age.

Tyrunt is unusual for only evolving during the day; this is due to UV radiation triggering the production of an amino acid vital for the evolutionary process.

Habitat

In prehistory, Tyrunt line members ranged expansively and in a variety of habitats, from swamps to deserts. Modern members of this line are similarly adaptable, but don’t like cold and need to be kept away from sources of modern diseases (see Hazards).

Notably, the Tyrunt line was thought to be a keystone species in the habitats in which it lived. As apex predators, they kept populations of herbivores in check, allowing for healthier plant growth and herbivore populations. They may have kept smaller predators in check as well.

Diet

These Pokemon are for the most part, obligate carnivores, and are decidedly not picky about the sorts of meat they like to eat. In prehistoric times they preyed on other dinosaur Pokemon as well as anything else they could catch. Resurrected individuals will attempt to eat anything that moves, including humans (see Hazards), but excluding potential mates among both their own species and others. Cannibalism of Tyrunt by Tyrantrum that aren’t their parents is not unknown, however.

Before fossil resurrection became possible it was heavily debated whether this line was predatory or subsisted on scavenging. However when live specimens were obtained they showed distinctly predatory behavior, debunking the scavenger theory. These Pokemon are not ones to pass up free meat, however, and will scavenge when they get the chance.

While meat of any sort is consumed readily and easily, pretty much any other sort of food leads to severe indigestion, due to the digestive systems of these Pokemon not being adapted to most modern foods. However, this improves with interbreeding with other Pokemon, to the point where they will readily eat Berries and Pokepuffs.

Hazards

This line of Pokemon is widely recognized as extremely dangerous, to a point where most Leagues require a permit to own them. Tyrantrum’s banana-sized teeth and massive jaws can easily bite a person in half, and the Pokemon can easily trample or claw when it can’t bite. Resurrected Tyrantrum are pretty much impossible to train due to their predatory, aggressive nature and willingness to attack humans and other Pokemon, and are exclusively kept in reserves. Resurrected Tyrunt are more tameable, but still have a habit of attempting to taste anything that moves, and thus must be muzzled until they are trained out of this behavior. Captive-bred Tyrunt have more docile temperaments and are safer to train, though nipping and teething must be corrected early on to avoid more dangerous habits. Tyrantrum in general react violently to having their feathery parts touched, due to said parts being status symbols (See Courting And Childrearing and Social Structure).

Tyrunt line members themselves are vulnerable to modern diseases. While viral infections have yet to take a foothold due to the species-specific nature of viruses, fungal and bacterial infections are even more crippling than normal to this line due to their immune systems not being adapted to modern diseases, and can easily be fatal if not treated. This, like dietary flexibility and temperament, improves dramatically with interbreeding with other Pokemon, at the cost of a slightly slower maturation rate.

Courting and Childrearing

Tyrunt are typically too immature to actually mate.

Tyrantrum “beards” and crests are status symbols; they signify an individual’s health and suitability as a mate. Males and females find members of the opposite sex with similarly healthy feathers; after a simple mating dance and test biting, they mate.

Females lay clutches of 10-15 eggs, which hatch a few days after. The female maintains the nest for the young Tyrunt, keeps them warm, provides them with food, and protects them from other predators. The male assists with the latter two activities. Once the Tyrunt mature sufficiently they set off on their own, and the parents provide no further assistance.

Social Structure

Tyrunt typically live in packs, both for ease of finding and taking down food and defense against predators.

Tyrantrum are typically solitary except for mated pairs. Clashes over territory are common, though usually settled by displays of feathery areas in a test of who's healthier. However, Tyrantrum are known to work together to take down large, tough prey, as observed with individuals in a preserve attacking a Steelix.

In Human Culture

This line is by far the most iconic dinosaur Pokemon in history, surpassing even Aerodactyl and Archeops. Countless toys, theme park attractions, books, and works of art have been created dedicated to this species, and even before fossil resurrection was possible it was praised as one of the most powerful predators ever. Since their revival they are a popular attraction at reserves and some zoos, though most install protective fencing to keep Tyrantrum away from patrons.

It has appeared countless times in cinema, from being an enemy to giant Electivire, to being a toy, to being an example of the dangers of genetic engeneering, to being an antagonist in its own right. Appearances in television include friendly purple versions and various documentaries, as well as the design of various digital monsters. They also feature in video games, including one about hunting dinosaurs, and comics, including as the subject of a young boy’s imagination as well as one of the main characters of a webcomic about dinosaurs.

I like the thing overall, but I would make a modification to the Human Culture section about the Tyrunt Line's place in modern society, now that they're being repopulated. List some of the reserves maybe, or what trained members of the line might do for trainers and others.

Very nice, but maybe add something to the Barney bit about Dragonite? Since Barney, despite his species, looks way more like Dragonite than Tyrantrum, so maybe you could say something like "a friendly purple creature created by combining Tyrantrum's features with those of a Dragonite"?

Also, maybe change the "bread-loving digital monster" bit to "various digital monsters"? The Agumon line is actually based on T. rex, while the Guilmon line are simply dinosaurian dragons, and there are other countless rex-like Digimon out there. And too, there's Walking with Dinosaurs...

Would someone want to do a Charmander line revision to mention its Mega Evolutions?

Heya, this would be my first edit to the Fanon Pokédex, but what do you think of these additions to the Charmander page to mention both Mega Charizards?

Morphs

Two types of Mega Stone have been discovered to work with Charizard, known as "Charizardite X/Y", and are currently being researched by Professor Augustine Sycamore of the Kalos region. Under the influence of Charizardite Y, Charizard grows a third horn on its head and its wings increase in size. Charizardite X presents even more drastic changes in the Pokémon; Charizard's skin color changes to primarily black with a blue underbelly and neon blue horn tips, making it somewhat resemble the legendary Zekrom. Its wings change to a more jagged shape, and it grows a pair of blue horns on each shoulder.

Notable Biology

As Mega Charizard X, Charizard gains extra keratin in its claws, making them even harder than usual and increasing the potency of its physical attacks; this ability, appropriately, has been popularly labeled as "Tough Claws". Its pyrosacs also become much more resistant to heat and react to its enzymes more rapidly, which is marked by its flames changing from red to a much hotter blue. In this form, Charizard tends to expel a constant stream of fire from its mouth. It has also been confirmed that Charizard changes from a Fire/Flying type to a Fire/Dragon type in this form. Due to Charizard's similarity to stereotypical Dragon-type Pokémon in all forms, scientists have theorized that its Dragon typing may be some sort of hidden ancestral trait that can only be brought out in modern specimens by Mega Evolution.

As Mega Charizard Y, Charizard's wings develop even further, allowing it to reach even greater altitudes during flight. Similar to Groudon, it also gains the ability to locally increase the intensity of sunlight during a battle. This is complimented by further development of the muscles in its pyrosacs; both of these modifications allow it to expel fire with much greater intensity.

In Human Culture (new section)

While Charmander and its evolutions are not true Dragon-type Pokémon (except when Mega Evolved), the line is much more common and widely recognized in human culture than most true Dragon-types. Charmander, along with Bulbasaur and Squirtle, is given to beginning trainers in both the Kanto and Kalos regions, with a Mega Stone in the latter case (X or Y, depending on the trainer's preference and/or availability).

The awe-inspiring appearance of Charizard, in all its forms, has granted it a place in folklore, cinema, literature, television and video games, usually as a vicious, fire-breathing beast with a knack for kidnapping princesses. A particularly vicious, treasure-hoarding Charizard serves as the antagonist of a well-known fantasy novel. The main antagonist of a cartoon about sentient robots that transform into Pokémon has a Mega Charizard Y as his alternate mode during the last few episodes, upgraded from a Tyrantrum. In a more humorous light, a female Charizard appears in a series of animated movies about the misadventures of a green, swamp-dwelling Conkeldurr.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated :)

I find that referencing specific works extant in our world is kind of iffy. I mean, how do we know that Smaug was a Charizard and not a Salamence, Garchomp, or Hydregion? (Bonus on the last having in its name the name of a special forest in The Silmarillion.) Besides, how do we know that human culture there developed like ours, given the addition of Pokemon?

I am fine with the Morphs and Biology Charmander additions, they can be added to the page.

Human culture, a bit iffy on at the moment. Most especially at this:

While Charmander and its evolutions are not true Dragon-type Pokémon (except when Mega Evolved), the line is much more common and widely recognized in human culture than most true Dragon-types. Charmander, along with Bulbasaur and Squirtle, is given to beginning trainers in both the Kanto and Kalos regions, with a Mega Stone in the latter case (X or Y, depending on the trainer's preference and/or availability).

We generally don't run with the assumption that beginning trainers get Pokémon from professors; rather, your first mon is typically obtained from a family member, Safari Zone, pet shop (traditional starters are popular pets for what that's worth), just-throwing-balls-at-random-commons, or in some cases a school/extracurricular program.

Do you highlight everything looking for secret messages?

Thanks, just added the Mega Evo sections. Just had to make a couple of minor corrections for redundancy (such as the word "intensely" being used twice) and missed details (such as Charizard Y's arm wings).

Sure, modifying the IHC section according to your suggestions. As for the Smaug thing, though, I personally think both Charizard and Garchomp are the best fits - Charizard for the color and its nature as a "fire drake", and Garchomp for hoarding treasure. Since Smaug has nothing to do with sharks, IMO Charizard is probably the best fit. A lot of articles in the Dex reference extant works in the same way, but if you think it's something we should get rid of, then maybe us tropers can discuss it in this forum?

Anyway...

While Charmander and its evolutions are not true Dragon-type Pokémon (except when Mega Evolved), the line is much more common and widely recognized in human culture than most true Dragon-types. So I finally managed to finish this before the year's out.

Alomomola

Morphs [Oak Catalog #]

  • Alomomola [#594]

Morphology and Notable Biology

Alomomola is a species of piscine, tetraodontiform Pokémon native to the waters of the Unova and Kalos regions. They are pink in color, with a light pink body and dark pink operculum, oddly hand shaped fins, and clavus, along with golden eyes. A rare phenotype exists that is purple in color, and highly prized by collectors.

Alomomola are most famously known for finding wounded Pokémon and bringing them close in order to heal them with the membrane covering their entire bodies. This is more than just altruism, as this act also prevents the Pokémon from getting eaten by predators. Said mucus covers an extremely rough skin, which can be as rough as sandpaper. Despite looking similar to Luvdisc, Alomomola are not closely related to them at all, and in fact are more closely related to Qwilfish, sharing the same four fused teeth that gives the family their name. Research is still inconclusive as to whether or not they contain the same tetrodotoxin in their organs as their cousins, however.

Alomomola also like to bask, and can be seen floating on the surface with their bodies facing the sun, said skin being highly reflective, and also capable of changing in shade in response to attack by predators. They can be accurately described as "floating heads," as they lack much of a spine, and most of their skeleton is made of cartilage. Similarly to species such as Sharpedo, they lack a swim bladder, and have to keep swimming constantly in order to stay afloat. Unlike many species of piscine Pokémon that swim from side to side, Alomola move their fins in a way akin to a rower, except that they don’t go horizontal to do so.

Two known morphs of Alomomola are known to science. The more common phenotype has the ability to more easily heal Pokémon from burns or paralysis, and can more easily heal itself from such conditions in the rain. The second, rarer phenotype has an enhanced Healing Factor, but can only activate it upon fleeing from battle.

Diet

Alomomola tend to eat soft bodied seafaring Pokémon such as Frillish and Tentacool, but are also known to eat young members of different species of piscine Pokémon, crustacean Pokémon such as Krabby and Binacle, and eel grass. Due to the low nutritional value of such a diet, Alomomola need to eat a large amount of food in order to get the calories necessary for survival.

Habitat

Alomomola are pelagic, mainly staying in the open ocean with a preference for tropical waters, though some populations do venture into shallow water and live in temperate waters. These places include Routes 4, 17, 18 and 21 of Unova, as well as off Virbank and Driftveil City. Within the Kalos region, Alomomola can be commonly found swimming in the waters of Azure Bay. Outside of these populations, Alomomola tend to spend most of their times at depths greater than 660 feet (200 m), but cannot handle prolonged temperatures lower than 12 °C (54 °F) without basking, as that will lead to eventual disorientation and death.

Hazards

Alomomola are as a whole completely docile and prefer to swim away from potential danger. The most danger that can come from one normally is one launching itself out of the water and colliding with someone’s face. However, if cornered, like all Pokémon they are capable of defending themselves.

Their main method of defense tends to be using various barriers to defend themselves from attack, though if that doesn’t work they can spin their bodies horizontally in order to slap enemies with their fins. They can also shoot pulses of water with ultrasonic waves that disorient opponents, fire salt water into their opponent’s wounds, cloak themselves in water in order to ram opponents, and in the case of older Alomomola, fire blasts of water capable of tearing skin off. Another odd ability they have is the ability to lower an opponent’s defenses using an odd beam fired from their eyes. Alomomola do have some paranormal abilities, but they tend to remain inactive without proper training.

However, Alomomola are at their most dangerous when helping other Pokémon. Their skill with barriers allows them to block wide ranging attacks such as Blizzard and Discharge, and they can soak their enemies to the bone so that species such as the Chinchou Line can zap them dead. Alomomola's lack of a swim bladder makes them incredibly hard to keep in aquariums, as they need rounded tanks in order to keep themselves from ramming the tank sides and suffering serious injury, with one of the few places with specimens on display being an aquarium in Goldenrod City in Johto.

Courting and Childrearing

Little is known about how Alomomola breed in the wild, but in captivity it is noted that they can lay the largest amount of eggs out of any single vertebrate Pokémon, and said eggs are fertilized externally. Alomomola are born extremely tiny and somewhat reminiscent of Qwilfish, but grow incredibly fast, with one captive specimen growing to nearly adult size in merely a few months. Alomomola do not practice parental care, with the fry being left to the tender mercies of the ocean once their eggs are fertilized. In captivity, however, Alomomola tend to lay larger eggs, and their fry come out much larger than their wild cousins, and more similar to their adult counterparts.

Social Structure

Alomomola fry mainly spend their time in groups for their protection, as they’re tiny enough for even Magikarp to be a danger. Once they get big enough, however, they separate, with adult Alomomola spending their time either alone, in pairs, or in small groups. Some Alomomola are known to stick close to other species in order to feed on their scraps while they get a free healer, and others will hang around humans to be hand-fed.

One such species that commonly hangs around Alomomola are Remoraid, who often feed on their scraps instead, as well as any parasites on the body of the Pokémon. In some cases this can lead to younger Remoraid getting lodged in their gills, causing respiratory problems. This relationship tends to last until they evolve into Octillery, at which point they leave or in some cases even attack their old partners.

In Human Culture

Alomomola are rarely eaten, though those regions that do consume them consider the Pokémon to be a delicacy and within Unova’s zodiac they represent the month of March. Views of the species within popular culture range from neutral to positive, especially due to the fact that they rescue injured Pokémon and in some cases humans, with the part of the world containing Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh making them a household name. One such story involved a holy man being thrown into the sea by ruffians in the folklore of the area north of Kalos, only to be saved by a helpful Alomomola.

Actual depictions of the species within popular culture are rare, however, with exceptions including a popular community simulator and a scuba diving simulator. Pokémon Centers located by the sea often have Alomomola on hand, as they tend to be better suited for treating aquatic Pokemon as opposed to the Chansey Line members and Audino used normally. On a more negative note, however, fishermen have been known to cut their fins off and leave them to die at the seafloor due to viewing them as pests.

Due to their highly reflective skin and odd shape, many cultures associate Alomomola with the moon in their mythology, with their name in many languages more or less meaning “moon fish”. In others they are considered sacred and are forbidden to be killed, as it’s believed that without them other species couldn’t find their way to their fishing spots, and by extension the fishermen’s nets.
