This thread is for quick questions. A "quick question" is a question which has a relatively quick, generally factual answer; a question which is not likely to inspire an extended discussion.

e.g.

Quick Question: How tall is an average ten-year-old boy?
Not a Quick Question: Why are Americans obsessed with guns?

Quick Question: Why is ALS sometimes called Lou Gehrig's Disease? Who was Lou Gehrig?
Not a Quick Question: In Alan Dean Foster's Thranx Commonwealth series, is Pip a Mary Sue?

Get the idea?

There's a general idea that doing exercises in a particular part of the body will slim down that part of the body. But I think I've heard it's not true. Any exercise draws from all fat areas equally.

It tends not to work like that - the only way to get that happening is to cut calories, do more exercise and get to a point where you're happy with the result there.

Is what UsefulNotes. We Are Not The Wehrmacht's says about comparing the Bundeswehr to the Wehrmacht and/or considering them the successor/replacement for said Wehrmacht true? Is it genuinely a Berserk Button for German servicemembers and civilians alike?

Germany in general is very vehemently against any mention of the third reich, most old films and recordings of old rallies and the like that, that aren't demonstrated for historical or documentary purposes are banned. I'm not sure if you would consider the reaction guilt, I'd rather compare it to making sure it's washed away. Germany now is not the Germany of the 40's (literally, they had to rebuild most of Berlin and other prominent cities from the ground up.) and the Germans will be the first to tell you that.

The Bundeswehr relates to the Wehrmacht only in the sense that they are both German and both militaries. I'm not sure if drawing comparisons to them would be technically offensive but it would be in quite bad taste. The civ's might not mind as much but you'd probably get a couple of "boorish foreigners" when out of hearing range.

Oddly enough, even though mentions of Naziism in public media are highly restricted, Hogan's Heroes got aired in Germany. I'm pretty sure the main reason the German dub added Klink's housekeeper as an unseen character is so they'd have something to talk about when the English version of the characters are praising the Fuhrer.

Ah Hogan'sHeroes, my favorite show hands down, well the show seems to run on rule of funny and the Nazi's are the bad guys so Germany probably found it acceptable, after all Clink and Schultz pretty much made it clear they wanted nothing to do with the Gestapo and historically only about 5% of the Wehrmacht were members of the nazi party. (allegedly)

They wanted nothing to do with the Gestapo more because they were afraid of them than because they thought they were reprehensible. Something like a necessary evil you don't want to find yourself on the wrong end of.

I think they also had to censor out Swastikas.

This We Are Not The Wehrmacht thing confuses me further because AFAIK, the Wehrmacht itself wasn't responsible for most of the genocidal atrocities that the Nazi regime committed; that was the SS, the Waffen-SS, and the Gestapo's area. Or am I wrong?

They did have their share of war crimes, though. And even without that there is still the Nazi association.

The Wehrmacht included the SS divisions, it's the term for the combined armed forces, they may have had different command structures and leadership but they were included, and more importantly people saw them as included. This has a great effect on the popular perception of the organization as a whole, after all we have the trope All Germans Are Nazis despite the fact that ~5% of the entire Wehrmacht were members of the Nazi party. (Don't quote me on that, it was the only number I could find, still a ways away from "all of them".)

As for war crimes, yes the SS divisions were the overachievers but you also have Rommel's Afrika Korps who were not only innocent of war crimes, they weren't even accused, most of the Wehrmacht fell somewhere in the middle. (I could write essays on Rommel and the Wehrmacht in general so for the sake of time I'll keep it short.) The Wehrmacht offensives were not even-headed or polite. Especially the eastern front where a significant portion of the forces believed communism was a Jewish plot, (not helped by the burning of the Reichstag in 1933 being blamed on communists.) This led to... mistreatment of the Soviets, especially as POW's.

Finally, the Nuremberg Trials at the end of the war also concluded that while not an inherently criminal organization, many crimes were committed by the Wehrmacht. So it was likely in their best interest to leave the term buried in the sands of time as a metaphorical rebirth and a gesture of good faith to the international community.

Science considers everything in the universe to be "natural", as in, if magic was sudenly discovered overnight, that too, would be a natural part of the objective reality, according to science. With that in mind, what exactly could be considered a supernatural phenomenon?

I had been searching and I discovered that some people don't like the deconstruction meme from T Vtropes. Still, what is the difference the deconstruction in literary criticism and the one in T Vtropes?

So I've only had my PS vita for a month, but the charger has mysteriously stopped working. The orange light won't come on, and no matter how hard I try it just won't work.

I have no idea why.

Anyone know how to fix this maybe? (other than buying a new Vita)

^^ I think that some people opine that "deconstruction" is overused as a term, being frequently applied to everything that takes an unusual perspective or treatment on a familiar setting or genre, or how extensively or comprehensively it questions or overturns the basic premises of that setting/genre.

Say, in asexual reproduction where an organism splits into two identical ones, are the two resulting organisms "mother" and "daughter", or would they be "siblings" (that is, the original is technically "dead" and gave birth to two identical twins)?

It's not quite that simple. (is it ever?) It starts out with the single cell being called the "mother. But when the division is complete, there are two "daughter cells" and neither one is the "mother" anymore. Both of the daughters are identical to the mother and to each other.

Both offspring are called daughter organisms, yes. Even if in practice, a lot of these "splittings" (especially at cell division level) aren't actually identical.
