Well as long as Ian Flynn is still writing, I'm good with the news.

Oh shit, I just now realized something: IDW just got Sonic the Hedgehog. We are dangerously close to actually seeing an official Sonic/MLP crossover. That sounds crazy but remember: IDW LOVES to do crossovers with their properties and Sonic has already been involved in multiple unlikely crossovers in his comics (Mega Man, The Savage Dragon, X Files).

Just as long as it isn't Many Hands :P

Sonic's also crossed over with Image Comics and Sabrina.

Yeah I know he crossovered with Image. That's why I said Savage Dragon as one of those examples.

Though I didn't know he crossovered with other Archie characters like Sabrina.

Wait, Sonic crossed over with The X-Files? When did that happen? surprised

[up] It was an unofficial crossover (IIRC, either in the Image crossover or Sonic Live; I forget which). Barely Lawyer Friendly Cameos of Mulder and Scully appeared.

I say this could be the start of beautiful friendship with Sonic and IDW.

[up]I'm still gonna wait to see just how they're gonna handle it. If they continue the Postboot continuity with Flynn, I'll be all on-board, but if they just start over, well, we'll see. Again, it's IDW; for all we know, they might just cover their bases and do both. That would be the best-case scenario I think.

[up] What if they split the difference: bring Flynn and co. back, but completely reboot the series again?

[up]Honestly, I wouldn't mind that so much. That's what I wanted them to do with Postboot in the first place, and it's also what Flynn wanted to do. It's just that if it didn't have Flynn on board, I'm not really sure how it would turn out. As long as it still has Flynn and the Freedom Fighters, I'd be all for it.

Meanwhile, I'm sitting around brainstorming the various crossovers that could happen...

For instance, you guys know how IDW likes to have a big crossover event during the beginning of the year? I can't stop wondering what if next year, the theme is Mars Attacks, only it's different with:

  • Star Trek
  • G.I. Joe or Atomic Robo note
  • My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
  • and the new kid on the IDW block: Sonic the Hedgehog!

...Or they could just take it one step at a time and start with something simple...like Sonic the Hedgehog/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. evil grin

As you can see, I'm still ecstatic about this that I'll take anything they throw at us.

So Penders has been at it again, this time giving us his oh so special thoughts on the IDW partnership:

The ONLY reason I'd submit to IDW's SONIC would be to prove my version would sell better. Since I doubt it'd ever happen, it's a moot point.

HA!

Small Name, Big Ego much. Heck, he could be the personification of it.

[up] See, it's not so much that he could be the personification of Small Name, Big Ego. Rather he IS that.

But you know what? Why antagonize the guy at this point? I'm happy that Sonic's going to IDW. And Penders seems content as is.

We really shouldn't care. In fact, we should wish him well...'cause we'll be laughing our heads off when he's burning in Hell. evil grinevil grinevil grin

[up]I'm still holding out on that. If IDW is going to just continue the old Postboot continuity or keep on Ian Flynn, then it might as well just be the next chapter for the comic, but if we're not getting any of that, then it really is the end of an era.

Also, does anyone think we're getting multiple comics? Because when IDW was talking about hiring its' creators for the comic, they didn't just mention forming a creative team; they said they were getting together creative teams, plural. That could just mean they're having both the regular Sonic comic and Sonic Universe like Archie, but maybe there's a bit more to it than that.

@ Targetmaster Joe

Pretty much, he seems to be an attention getter who thrives on reaction, and most of it is negative. As said above, this is new era coming and I can't wait to see what happens to Sonic in the IDW comics. Also since he would be in the IDW comics, this would mean no more lawsuits coming their way.

This whole video is neat, especially the revelation that Iron Dominion was a joke pitch Ian inserted among his actual #200 pitches to make the rest look better, and had to scramble to make it work when it was approved.

Also, my only real problem with IDW is the sheer volume of spinoffs running alongside main books, along with the tons and tons of crossovers.

So this happened:

{Replying to IDW Publishing}

NINTRENDODUDE: Please give Ken Penders a job! I beg you! Do not hire Ian Flynn!

Well. Someone had their priorities straight. But amazingly enough, so does Penders.

Please don't do this. Don't implore anyone not to give someone else a job. Let the person hiring determine someone else's standards.

I thought I'd never see the day, but it's possible that there's some small part of Penders that is, of all things, admirable. Now let's see how long it takes for him to prop up The Lara Su Chronicles like it's the best thing since sliced bread again, shall we?tongue

Who want to pick Penders over Ian Flynn?

lalalei2001 Since: Oct, 2009

I feel bad for Ken Penders. Regardless of quality the Lara-Su Chronicles is his dream project, and the fact that the majority of people dislike something he put years of effort into, the fanbase that exists for it is super small, and that no matter how much he tries promotes it it just doesn't click that this won't necessarily work out how he wants it to, hurts.

You could argue that anything's marketable as long as it finds and hits a target audience, but the fact that things we see every day did pass the marketing test of sorts means there's a lot more stuff that didn't, stuck in people's heads or scraps of paper forever, never to reach a wider audience.

[up][up]Oh, I can easily tell you who. Like I've said, there are still plenty of young 20-somethings who grew up reading and loving Pender's work without knowing any better, but not all of them kept reading the comic into the modern era. Some of them left before Flynn came onboard, and so without being able to read Flynn's vastly superior work, they don't know just how bad they had it, and still think that Penders is the pinnacle of Sonic writers. But now, being all grown up and having gotten their shit together, they might just be willing to come back to the Sonic comics if their beloved Penders returned to the helm. That would also explain why most of his Lara Su tweets keep getting likes.tongue

Alternatively, there might be some who grew up on Penders and kept reading straight into Flynn who's taste was nonetheless so affected and warped by Penders that to them, Penders' way of telling a Sonic story is the only way of telling a Sonic story, and that anything any other Sonic writers do is blasphemy. Even Flynn.

[up] It doesn't help that Flynn's stories, whether on their own or building off of what other writers do, have a Broken Base in itself XD; All the main writers get it to some extent but Ian Flynn's run was when the Internet wasn't new anymore and Archie Sonic had dedicated forums, so you could see more people discussing, praising, and complaining about it than before. There's also the 'I like some of X's stories but not all' or 'Y's story is the best/worst' kinda stuff.

[up]The funny thing is, this shouldn't even be up for debate. Nearly every single concept of the Preboot that's fondly remembered was either created by Flynn or revamped by Flynn. Penders Scourge: 1-note joke called Evil Sonic who no-one gives a shit about. Penders Fiona: No personality whatsoever. Penders Tommy Turtle: Who gives a fuck about Tommy Turtle? Really, every single reason we give a damn about most of these guys is because of what Flynn did when he got a hold of them and made them actually good. (Except Tommy Turtle because fuck Tommy Turtle.) And yet, that just doesn't matter to the Penders diehards.
