Let's keep on rollin'!

(Route 26, Gates to Victory)

Cooltrainer Beth: Oh! A newcomer with 8 badges!

Mari: Hello, why are you hanging around here?

Beth: My poor Rapidash got owned bad by this red-headed fellow. He looked pretty desparate to win at any cost, and was mumbling something all the time under his breath.

Mari: That's kinda creepy.

Beth: My poor Rapidash is a little traumatised, so I'm letting her sleep it off.

Mari: Putting off your League challenge until she recovers?

Beth: Yep! Say, since you seem pretty strong, how about we trade numbers? I'd like to call you up for a rematch some day.

Mari: Well, why not? I don't mind having more friends to talk with over the phone.

(Gates to Victory - Gatehouse in front of Routes 25, 26, 28, and Victory Road)

Guard: Hello, (consults list) Mari!

Mari: That's not a long list you have there.

Guard: Well, not many League Candidates this season. Anyways, We already know of your accomplishments, so this is just a formality, but still, Badges please!

Mari: Inspecting them, huh? Here.

Guard: ...Looks good! Here's to your success!

Mari: Thanks! Say, what's down these other two doors?

Guard: One's going to Route 25 and Viridian City, and the other goes to Route 28 and Mount Silver... but Silver's off limits due to the crazily overpowered wild pokemon there.

Mari: Awww, nuts. I wouldn't mind having some Training from Hell over there.

Guard: Sorry, Mari, rules are rules.

Almost there, waiting to see if any last-minute votes come forth.

Insert I Knew It! here.

(As Mari steps into Victory Road, back in New Bark...)

J. A. Chris: Hey there Professor!

Elm: Erm... You're... Chris, right?

J. A. Chris: Remember me?

Elm: I certainly remember a noisy little runt who doodled little stickmen in the margins of my old notebooks.

J. A. Chris: ugh. You're never going to let that go?

Elm: Oh, don't worry, I'm not really mad about it since it didn't spoil my papers, and the doodles were amusing.

Chris: What about your errand?

Elm: Oh, yes. I'd like you to take this specialty pokeball that contains a Brave Chikorita, the brother of the one that Bato stole. Oh, and take these studies I've done of Mari's Togepi to Oak's lab in Kanto, all right? My modem broke down again, so I can't connect to the Network.

Chris: Sure, no problem.

(Chikorita pops out of his pokeball)

Chris: I shall call you Foil.

Foil: Chiko! (twirls leaf on head happily.)

(Meanwhile, back at Victory Road...)

Mari: All right! Gnaw, let Kangaskhan take the lead! I want to see how well her training has paid off.

(Gnaw nods.)

Wild Rhyhorn appeared!

Kangaskhan purred to her baby to hide in her pouch, as the Rhyhorn issued a challenge. As it charged, she deftly sidestepped the clumsy attack, and kicked it in the hindquarters with a subtle Fake Out, almost knocking the stony rhino pokemon on its side.

Unfortunately, it wasn't too effective against the Rhyhorn. As it lunged at her again, Kangaskhan caught its foreleg in her mouth and Crunched hard, producing a painful-sounding crackle and a roar of pain from the Rhyhorn. As it struck her with its head in retaliation, she twisted her body so it blow wouldn't land on her pouch.

Using her tail, she forced the Rhyhorn back. As it reared up to begin another charge, she darted forward suddenly, Sucker Punching it unconcious.

Mari: Good moves, Kangaskhan!

Kangas: Purrr. (Thanks.)

Gnaw: Hrrm. (Use your tail a little more, that'll give you more distance to effectively zone your opponent.)

Mari: Let's not spend too much time here, I can hear the Golbats already.

(LP Note: Victory Road has changed a lot since the FRLG days. The earthquakes caused by the Cinnabar Eruption have caused most of the Boulder puzzles to be wrecked beyond recovery. Amongst the goodies you can find in here include TM 26...)

Mari: Awesome! An Earthquake TM! It's mine now >:D

(LP Note: ...TM 79 (Dark Pulse), some Max Revives, Ultra Balls, and a few Shards.)

Mari: Renko said she needed these Shards for the Move Tutors. Maybe I'll find another use for these besides trading for Berries.

Wild Golbat: Hisssss.

Mari: Not again!

(The end of Victory Road is barred by a familiar figure.)

Mari: Bato.

Bato: Long time no see, Mari.

Next: RIVAL fight.

They're even more annoying if the only pokemon you have with an attack that is SE against them is slow enough to ALWAYS go second against those buggers!

To wit, Mari is almost at Indigo! Also, Golbat aren't scary when you're used to having someone fast and supereffective versus them.

Mari's Party, Victory road:

  • Gnaw
  • Leafeon
    • Razor Leaf
    • Quick Attack
    • Facade
    • Synthesis
  • Kangaskhan
    • Fake Out
    • Sucker Punch
    • Crunch
    • Drain Punch
  • Kenji
    • Cut
    • Fly
    • False Swipe
    • Aerial Ace
  • Krabby
  • Sosuke

(Victory Road)

Bato: It's been too long, Mari.

Mari: I haven't seen you since Goldenrod. What have you been up to?

Bato: I have been training and thinking.

Mari: About what?

Bato: I have decided that maybe that Dragon Tamer was right - I have been one serious douchebag.

Mari: I hope you intend to try and be a better person.

Bato: I also intend to defeat you this time, Mari! I will prove that I am also a trainer not to be underestimated.

Mari: All right! You're on!

(LP Note: Here's a team spoilers for our Rival for this fight.)

Rival Bato wishes to fight! He sent out a Sneasel!

Mari: Kangskhan, go! (double take) Hold on, isn't that Sneasel from some guy on Cianwood?

Bato: Well, yes. However, he doesn't seem to want to leave my party, so I won't force him away.

Kangaskhan lulled Sneasel into getting too close, and Faked him Out! Sneasel Flinched!

Bato: Isn't it cheap to always lead with that move?

(LP Note: Nope, it isn't. Firstly, even with STAB, Fake Out has a measly 60 power - only Persian and Ambipom can get crazy painful Pikachu one-shotting power off Fake Out thanks to Technician. Secondly, lol Inner Focus. Thirdly, I just sacrificed a moveslot to get First Flinch every time, although it pays off if my opponent packs loads of Glass Cannons without priority attacks. Finally, if I keep switching to abuse Fake Out, my opponent can really chip away at my team with Entry Hazards and Weather Damage. Of course, Baton Passing a Swords Dance boost or two will make it really, really hurt.)

As Kangaskhan spun round to follow through, Sneasel struck hard at point-blank with Faint Attack! Kangaskhan roared in pain as she twisted to put her baby out of harm's way! As the Sneasel shot past, he got clipped by a Drain Punch! It was super-effective!

Bato: Oh, no!

Sneasel Fainted...

Mari: Nice footwork, Kangaskhan! I think that your Sneasel needs more training, he hasn't fulfilled his potential yet.

i think i found the best set of pokemon. • a wishcash - it's a water type so efective against fire. and also aground type that makes electric pokemon useles(is it useless/uselles). •torterra - a grass type, effective against water, ground and rock, but also a ground type that makes fire types nve( not very effective). •honchkrow - a flying type that is very useful against fight and grass types, but weak to electric types. his dark type side makes the electric types a bit easier. •magmortar -very effective one. it K.O.'s grass, bug, steel, ice, dark and ghost types. but water pokemon could kill him. •jinx - an ice type effective against dragon types. his psychic type side is very effevtive against ghosts. •electrevire -his electric powers will own water, dragon and flying types. and with fire punch as attack he kills also grass, steel, ice, bug and dark types.

so what do you folks think??

or you play as my brother: 6 arceus with all a different plate.

I'm planning to take one of Kangaskhan's moves out for Headbutt. Crunch or Sucker Punch? Most likely I'll keep Sucker Punch though, crazy priority trickery defeats a regular speed metagame any day.

Also, I might have Renko give her a name, since she came from Platinum. What'd make a good name for Kangaskhan, something like Keine?

(Victory Road)

Bato: Golbat, make me proud!

Kangaskhan watched the Golbat's pokeball as it released the bat. Waiting for that right moment, she suddenly lashed out, trying to Sucker Punch her opponent...

Only fall short, as her opponent did not advance to attempt any direct attacks. Looking up, she caught the Confuse Ray dead on and fgfjdefgnhnserqxcbgd

Pokedex: Kangaskhan was confused!

Mari: Arrrrrgh!

Bato: Round and round your Kangaskhan will go, whom she hits, nobody will know.

Mari: Kangas! Focus and fight that disorientation! Golbat's about to make his next move!

As Kangaskhan staggered about, she lashed out with a Sucker Punch just as Golbat prepared to attack, only to slam her tail into the cave wall with a painful thunk. (Ouch!)

Insult was added to injury as the Golbat behind her launched several Air Cutter bursts at her, the vacuum pressure attacks stinging her most unpleasantly.

Shaking her head in an attempt to clear out the stars, Kangaskhan swung her tail out again, this time hitting something softer than the cave walls. A thud from across the cave indicated she had not missed the Golbat.

Pokedex: It was a Critical hit! Golbat fainted...

Bato: I call hax on that one.

Not very feminine names though. I was thinking Rosie at one point, or perhaps Maud or Dotsy or Sadie. Something a little Mama Bear-ish.

(Victory Road)

Update - Mari: 2; Bato: 0

Bato: I can't just get swept like this! Magneton, go!

Kangaskhan tried to Fake Magneton Out in her confusion! It failed. Magneton used Thunder Wave! Kangaskhan was paralysed.

Mari: No!

(LP Note: Mari, say hi to that old tactic, parafusion. Paralysis plus Confusion makes for a mean combo, and is often backed up with various attacks that encourage AND punish switching, from Focus Punch and the Entry Hazards, to flinching attacks in the vein of the ever-wicked Serene Grace Togekiss classic tactic, to the use of Leech Seed and Substitute, Buffs, AND even Pursuit sometimes. There's a reason why Lum Berries and the abilities Own Tempo, Shield Dust, and Limber retain some degree of usefulness. Also, Lanturne laughs at Togekiss's pitiful attempts to dent it while absorbing Thunder Wave.)

Bato: Taste the power of parafusion!

Magneton used Spark! Kangaskhan's muscles seized up from paralysis and prevented her from counterattacking! Magneton used Spark! It was a critical hit! Kangaskhan fainted...

Mari: No! Kangaskhan, return!

Bato:1; Mari:2

Bato: Looks like I might have caught up to you in skill (grin).

A little bit of a plot boost for Bato here. In the actual fight, Kangaskhan lasted longer than 2 Sparks, and was actually switched out for Sosuke, but I figured it'd show how much Bato has improved as a trainer. Also, his Magneton's moveset is nasty on the parafusion front.

I'm back, was unable to post yesterday because of the server being down for upgrades and maintenance.

Voting looks to be pretty much over, I'll pick my team based on the votes, type autobalancing, and my preferences (Meaning poor Lanturne won't join Gnaw, but may have some spotlight later).

Also, I notice my writing style seems to be more battle-centric for now compared to when Mari first set out. Perhaps that's because the game plays out this way, and anyway, battling is a major element of pokemon.

(Victory Road)

Mari: Sosuke! go!

(Bato scowled!)

Sosuke burst out of his pokeball with a Cross Chop! it's critically super-effective! Magneton was knocked out!

Bato: That was a cheesy revenge KO there - I know how powerful your Electivire is.

Mari: If it makes you any happier, I'll claim a free switch-in as you bring your next pokemon out.

Bato: Deal. (palms another pokeball) Meganium!

Mari: Sosuke, tag out! Let Leafeon take center stage!

The pokeballs hit the field at the same time, so there was no initiative advantage as Leafeon and Meganium spotted each other.

(LP Note: Here's that Leafeon VS Meganium fight! Lots of PLOT power going to come into play here. It won't be a swordfight from leafeon's perspective, because Leaf Blade isn't until level 71, but have at you a danmaku fight!)

Leafeon immediately began bounding around Meganium, using his Razor Leaves as a barrier while he looked for an opening. Watching Meganium's feet shift slightly, he decided to launch one of the Razor Leaves...

plink

...Only for it to bounce off the Reflect barrier Meganium had been preparing. In response, Meganium began readying an attack of her own.

Bato: Why aren't you giving any commands to Leafeon?

Mari: I have yet to need to give him advice.

Bato: N-no way! You're getting as good as him! (Meganium! Lead your shots with Petal Dance!)

Mari: Oh, you mean Red?

Bato: They say he can win battles without saying a single thing to his pokemon!

Mari: He does have an incredible bond of friendship with his pokemon.

Sensing the incoming petal barrage, Leafeon dodged and jumped about in an erratic fashion, returning fire with his own Razor Leaves. Several of the petals came dengerously close to hitting, but ultimately, all of them just grazed off his fur harmlessly.

Petal Dance ~Dynamic Entry

Feeling a strangely large mass aprroaching fast, Leafeon flung himself painfully through a mass of petals, and just in time, too, as the Meganium attempted to ram him with a full barrier of petals generated by Petal Dance.

(Meganium used Petal Dance! it was not very effective. Meganium became confused in its fatigue as the Dance ended!)

All too predictable, thought Leafeon smugly, at least until he realised the air was surprisingly purple. Panicking, he flung his Razor Leaves at Meganium while he jumped free of the spore cloud.

(Meganium's Poisonpowder took effect! Leafeon was poisoned! Leafeon's Razor Leaves scored a Critical hit! it wasn't very effective.)

Bato: Good work Meganium! Heal up with Synthesis!

Mari: Leafeon, don't get too heal-happy with your own Synthesis! Take advantage of your poisoned state!

Nodding, Leafeon pulled another barrier of Razor Leaves as Meganium collected faint traces of light coming in from the nearby exit. Watching the Meganium visibly heal from Synthesis, Leafeon waited for the proper moment before ditching the Leaves and darting forward, fiercely kicking the flower dinosaur after dropping his Facade.

(LP Note: Facade is a neat move to acquire as a lottery prize from Goldenrod! Extra damage when poisoned is easily abuseable on Leafeon, who has Synthesis and Leaf Guard to mitigate the long-term effects of Status attacks somewhat)

As the Meganium staggered from the blow, Leafeon landed sluggishly, the poisoning beginning to get to him. As he used Synthesis himself, he saw his opponent doing the same to counteract the damage inflicted by Facade, the Reflect barrier fading away.

Now! he thought, launching himself at top speed.

(Reflect faded! Leafeon used Facade! it was a critical hit! Meganium fainted...)
