and yeah i remember eddie going after IJBM and the IRC channel as a result; i cant remember if it was eddie getting mad IJBM criticised him or if it was too-late damage control after the goonswarm

I wonder what happened to the IRC channel

As I recall, a good chunk of the people who used it wandered over to the channel run by Wack D and then kind of wandered away to other things. I joined Tumblr because Wack'd was there, and now they only make a couple of appearances a year. Mostly to use their encyclopedic knowledge of webcomics for mischief.

(edited because apparently they added nonbinary pronouns on their troper profile in 2018)

Though on the other hand, I think I'd wandered away from the IRC channel before all that drama happened.

wait did we have an irc channel after FE nuked the original from records because he didnt run it? i know Bon Sequitur ran or had something to do with the original

i know the original still kept it on as #tropers even after FE cutlisted the page. i cant even remember what the page was called :(

i think #yackfest had a channel too

The IRC channel was separate from TV Tropes, so FE could cut its page (Troper IRC Channel) but not the channel itself.

IJBM turned into a hot mess all on its own. It didn't need any help from the Goons. Tropers are the reason they can't have fun/nice things because they will inevitably ruin it if some sort of set enforced rules are not laid out and adhered to. Even then, that isn't a guarantee. See the ultimate fate of Troper Tales and color text in the wiki section. FE was not the only one unhappy with the situation in IJBM. It required quite a large amount of mod time to look after that one section to the point the mods had almost no time for other things.

Color text is back on the wiki now (not intentionally though). The official mod stance on it was that it's ok to use sparingly on the main wiki when appropriate like for color tropes. It being disabled for so long killed it being used as a trend so most tropers coming up aren't aware of the markup + it's almost never used outside of some color tropes/indexes (ex:Purple is the New Trope) and JFF pages.

Didn't know that. I honestly wish it was still dead. I remember the mess it made and the Sisyphean task it was to get it policed before it got cut. Thankfully, the public at large is unaware of it and that it has the potential for "FUN."

Aye, there is the suggestion that colour markup be enabled only on particular pages, specifically to prevent its use in graffiti.

Tuefel Hunden IV: no i know it wasnt the goons getting IJBM cancelled but it felt like it was the final straw. P5 didnt go up until the goons pointed out all the gross fanservice examples though FE was iirc planning to add something like it before the goon rush

i remember arguing with people on the original incarnation of So Bad Its Horrible and if i recall IJBM was partially spawned out of that. another issue was that Fast Eddie participated in the original page, albeit to add a Superf*ckers (sic: yes that's the title) pic. funny enough that is how i found out about James Kochalka Superstar

i feel like that, since jff/sugar wiki is taken care of and i rarely see stuff like Evil text being used + AC now forcing a line break, most editors know not to wild out w/ it and we are far past the days of natter...

...but then again, i likely just jinxed it

The the ad nuking from the Goons likely being culprits was definitely a "we are done with this" point. Honestly I was happy to see more than a few pieces of that content get the axe.

yeah that was how i remember it. obv fuck lowtax, his clones, and every goon who hid their shitty tendencies behind a veneer of exposing ~gross nerds~, but the site was a hot fuckin mess. the goon swarm against Reddit happened around the same time and i kind of like how people do not remember Leddit used to be a pedo-friendly shithole

to be fair, growing up, i dont know anyone who knew how to use a pager except maybe when i was in kindergarten in the tail end of the 90s or something

My father had a pager for a few years before his job gave him a cell phone. He had a couple of different models of pager, because I remember the upgrade to the kind that can display text messages. I never quite worked out how to send messages to it. Obviously it was SMS, but as we didn't have cell phones, that wasn't an option. Supposedly you could send an email to number @ carrier, but I tried it once and it didn't work.

The email thing actually still worked for texts for a long time, at least on Verizon. I haven't used it in ages, so I'm not sure if they still do it.

ETA: I just tried it, and it does still work!
