There's a big difference between the story and the story teller, but you can bet your left testicle that if Kojima was such a horrible writer that the translators re-wrote chunks of mgs1's story, there'd be a writers guild outcry for royalties and they would be all over the media at the time. Most likely they did their jobs, but as the grandiose story telling genre was barely starting to enter the mainstream, they were unprepared and inexperienced in translating larger scripts with a typical japanese story into cohesive English sentences. There's a huge difference in the way story in japanese is told and how japanese normally speak, tone and words, so these translators, IF they were inexperienced in media translation, especially the anime/video game style (most likely), the words and tone of the game would seem off. TL:DR; It's only speculation and heresay anyway, we dont know, but i'm pretty sure we would have heard more about it if the translators did the (in my opinion) great story of mgs1.
