Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Guys can we not wait for two weeks before we discuss this. All this speculation is really pointless.

New effortpost:

Okay, so from the OVA binging...

What's the Work?

Plastic Little is a one-shot OVA focusing on the adventures of Captain Tita Mu Koshigaya, a young captain whose business is capturing exotic creatures for pet shops or zoos. By chance, near their planet of Ietta, she runs into Elysse Aldo Mordish, a young woman on the run from a rogue faction of Ietta's military force

Who's our villain?

Guizel is the mysterious armored commander of a splinter faction of Ietta's military. Now, seeking to develop a new weapon, Guizel commissioned Elysse's father Nalerof to work for him to develop a gravity device, intending on seizing control of Ietta via...something of a disaster. Elysse's father realized what was happening and entrusted the key of his device to his daughter, sending her away before Guizel killed him and the others on the project. Running into Tita, this puts her and her crew in Guizel's sights as well. Running into Tita and the others, Guizel promptly tries to kill everyone to reclaim Elysse, succeeding in gravely wounding Tita herself.

Now, Nalerof intended his inventions to better society, but Guizel is reversing them into a superweapon...capturing Elysse, he reveals he'll use the key to twist the gravity invention so that it inverts Ietta's gravity, wreaking holy havoc through the planet and destroying entire cities, killing everyone there. In the resulting crisis? Guizel would seize control. As Guizel begins to put his plan into motion, Tita and heroes arrive, prompting guizel to attempt to torture Tita to death in front of Elysse to mock her,...only for Tita to pull a hidden gun and shoot Guizel in the face, leaving him to plummet down a reactor shaft as the day is saved.

Mitigating Qualities?

None. Guizel is the only named villain and the driving force of conflict in the whole thing. Besides that...no mitigating qualities to speak of. He's just characterized as vicious, ambitious, power hungry, sadistic and cruel willing to kill countless innocents for his own benefit. Not bad for a 45 minute OVA

All right, more updates and shiz. I'm gonna hold off on the RoboCop write-ups for now; gonna chat a bit with bobg and ACW about making a subpage. As of now, there's over ten CMs for that series. Four are from the films, one's from an animated series, one is from a live-action series, and the rest are from comics that all have different continuities. In all fairness, this is one of the cases where a franchise needs a subpage, because the CMs are scattered all over the place.

And yes, I know I got my name pinned for the book Ember Rising and I'm past the deadline date. I've been busy working on a project I'm just about done with, but I should be able to discuss said novel by next Thursday. Already I feel like someone in that story counts.

Lastly, here's my write-up for Flaggatis. For the sake of not exacerbating Scrags' allergy to the color blue, I only put in one pothole for now.

Also [tup] for Guizel. Almost missed that.

Welkin Weasels: Flaggatis is a relentless stoat who longs to take over all of Welkin. After amassing a colossal horde of rats, Flaggatis and his minions roam around Welkin pillaging surrounding nations and laying siege to Castle Rayn. Flaggatis repeatedly torments Prince Poynt and his entourage with his magic spells while his rats continue to ransack the country and kill Lord Ragnar in the ensuing chaos. When his plans fail, Flaggatis attempts to kill Sylver and his gang out at sea, not caring about the sheer amount of rats he loses during his voyage. Centuries after his alleged death, Flaggatis reappears in Welkin as a vampire named Count Flistagga. With several vampire voles at his disposal, he sends multiple groups of voles to Welkin in hopes of turning everyone into a vampire; Flistagga himself turns or kills several innocent civilians, including Mayor Poynt's sister, Sybil, and a young child in the streets. Fueled by his hatred, Flaggatis devoted his entire life to causing as much turmoil in Welkin as possible.

Desil rewrite.

  • Mobile Suit Gundam AGE: Desil Galette is a seven-year old Sociopathic Soldier and Vagan Ace Pilot, who sees war as a game, and his victims as nothing more than expendable toys. As the pilot of the Zedas, he spearheads genocidal attacks on colonies, and is implied to be the one who orphaned Yurin L’Ciel. He subsequently hijacks the AGE-1, and tests out its capabilities by butchering his own allies. He later captures Yurin, puts her inside of a remote-controlled mobile suit, and forces her to attack her Love Interest, Flit. When Yurin tries to fight off his control, Decil kills her, while laughing about how she was "just a plaything." That’s all in the First Generation. By the Second Generation, he’s thirty-three years old and has, if anything, gotten worse. Deeply resentful of his younger brother Zeheart for having been promoted past him, he takes more and more insane risks. This ultimately leads to his getting most of the Magicians Eight killed as a part of a grudge match against Flit and murdering Flit's friend, and Flit's son Asemu's mentor, Woolf. It gets to the point where Zeheart, realizing what his brother has become, leaves Decil to die at Asemu’s hands in the aftermath of a losing battle.

Here's one for Xenoblade 2, after the entry for the relatively minor Dr. Castrofari. Not surprisingly, it's the Big Bad of the game, and will likely need spoiler tags on the work's YMMV page proper.

  • Malos. Initially established as The Dragon to the leader of the Torna Organization Jin, Malos steadily establishes that it's him that's calling the shots behind Torna's most heinous actions. Chronologically, he's first responsible for the deaths of countless lives in the Aegis war, causing massive damage with the battle against Mythra via collateral damage. He was weakened, but not completely destroyed, and aimed to restore his power at any cost as a result. The first hint that he's more ruthless than Jin is that he orders the relatively new member of Torna, Nia, to kill off the salvaging team after Jin backstabs Rex upon obtaining Pyra and her Aegis, believing that the less eyes to see their prize, the better. After Pyra and the Aegis are seized from them, Malos brings Pyra out of hiding by taking Cole's adopted child, Iona, hostage (after convincing her that Cole's condition can be cured with her cooperation). This results in Rex's party being lured out to where Malos intended Pyra to meet him. After a grueling fight and Akhos nullifying the ether in the area, weakening Rex's party, Rex's mentor of the day, Vandham, attempts to make a Heroic Sacrifice to get Rex, Pyra, and the others to escape. When his efforts prove to be eventually fruitless, Malos slays Vandham in cold blood. Much later, when Pyra is taken hostage by Torna after begging them not to kill Rex when they have him cornered, Malos commits Mind Rape on Pyra in the process of restoring his own Aegis powers. While his intention is to restore said powers, Malos goes the extra mile by erasing Pyra's personal memories, including the time she spent with Rex, later mocking Rex as he explains what he did. During the final moments of the story, as Malos heads up the World Tree to take control of Artifice Aion, he's confronted one last time by Rex. Malos, influenced by Amalthus, his Driver, and his anger and vindictiveness against the world, knows only death and destruction since his awakening. When Rex attempts to explain this to Malos, Malos shuts down Rex, turns down his offer of redemption, and outright explains that "[he] doesn't give a rat's ass what he says". With no other intention other than to utterly destroy civilization, Alrest, and the Architect, and embracing his Driver's negative feelings wholeheartedly, Malos is indeed the epitome of a monster shaped by mortal cynicism.

Indeed. However, the main rules say that Freudian Excuses or other such origins don't have to negate such eligibility.

First off, it's WAY too long.

Second, we need a full effortpost.

Third, they don't HAVE to negate eligibility, but in this case, if he WAS corrupted, there are moral agency issues.

When we say ;corrupted by hatred, that indicates it's not so much Freudian Excuse but a lacking of agency which is a disqualifier in general.

While I can't argue about the origins, I do consider that his embrace of his programming ought to allow him entry into this trope. He certainly doesn't feel cheated that he was molded this way.

TommyFresh Since: Aug, 2013

Also, a Freudian Excuse isn't an automatic disqualifier but it still can be and usually is still mitigating.
