Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[up] Found this at FreudianExcuse.Comic Books:

  • Subverted with Mr. Zsasz, who had a happy, pampered childhood and youth; he ruined his life himself after his parents' death by becoming a compulsive gambler who later took to murder to make sense out of his life.

Hell, let's look at his quote for the image at Batman's CM page: "I have no dysfunctional family background. I suffered neither childhood abuse or trauma. I kill for ONE reason only, doctor — because I CHOOSE to."

[tup] to Count Chocula and M'Thall.

[tdown] to Clifford Blossom (I really don't see Riverdale as the sort of show to have any qualifiers, its focus is more on character relationships and how these crimes affect the community, rather than individual evil) and Arkhamverse Zsasz (he's bad, but even ignoring the higher villains there are around six or so other serial killers inverse).

Not a fan of Hans' photos either.

And Kylo? Stop playing the victim card whenever things don't go your way here. This is far from the first time you've whined over stuff like this and it gets you nowhere.

Anyways, absolute no to Zsasz as he doesn't stand out enough for the setting. Graham isn't any different from the myriad of one-dimensional Dracula fanatics - hell, I think Barlowe is worse - and he doesn't come that close to counting.

Having read BOTG last night? Nothing's being oversold with Choc. My vote remains yea... and, on a lighter topic, part of the reason I'm never going to leave this thread is because I sincerely doubt people could have a passionate, serious argument about Count Chocula anywhere else.

Kylo, this is not a personal slight at you. There's a difference between a hostage situation and a Nazi gunning people down in the holocaust.

Honestly, I'm actually a bit surprised we were able to have a serious conversation about Count Chocula possibly being an example - and I mean in the sense that he wasn't dismissed right off the bat, not just that it was improbable he'd come up in the first place.

Honestly, we could then probably remove Abernathy, Stegman, and Waits's images.

Anyway, since we only have 9 entries so far this week (and one of them is Malvo's in a new Fargo tree), I'll tentatively merge this week's batch with next week's, unless anyone objects.

My tentative plan is to tomorrow effortpost Kreeg and Strucker (and maybe Hobby). Sunday I'll write up Carnage and any of the aforementioned ones if they get voted up; I'll also create the Resident Evil page (anyone got any good images of Strucker?). Monday I'll request the locking of Marvel Lit and RE.

Write up time:

  • Dagwon: Ark Seijin is the most vicious of the escaped criminals. The self-proclaimed Emperor of Space, Ark Seijin once wiped out the Kein Seijin, leaving only a single survivor in the warrior Lian. Arriving on earth, Ark Seijin initiates a series of brutal attack that leave multiple civilians dead while taking a special interest in torturing Lian. After he decides Earth has resisted him too much, Ark Seijin uses his technology to freeze the entire earth, which will kill every living thing on the planet on nothing more than a spiteful whim.

  • Forgotten Realms: Once a mortal assassin, Bhaal ascended to godhood as the God of Death. Interpreting 'Death' as 'Murder,' Bhaal's dogma dictated that his followers make it a habit of killing innocent people on a regular basis as sacrifices to Bhaal. Receiving a vision of his own death in the Time of Troubles, Bhaal sired countless mortal children with one specific purpose: despising all of them simply for existing, Bhaal left a curse to condemn them all to pain and suffering while arranging for them all to be murdered in hopes of bringing him back to life and punishing them for their very existence. Responsible for countless deaths and the entire Bhaalspawn crisis, Bhaal remained a figure of terror and hatred to all other Gods, even his ostensible allies.

  • Criminal: A spanish industrialist turned anarchist, Xavier Heimdahl tortures a CIA agent to death so he can steal a spcific computer worm designed by the man's contact to give him access to the world's nuclear codes. Having multiple people killed in pursuit of the codes, Heimdahl tries to hunt down the man with his victim's memories, even taking his victim's wife and daughter hostage. Upon recovering the codes, Heimdahl attempts to launch a missile at said wife and daughter out of spite before he nukes every population center on the planet.

  • Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan: Lady Chun Yi runs the Four Seasons brothel where she regularly has young women abducted and forced into sexual slavery, torturing those who refuse to comply. When the film's heroine Ai Nu resists, Chun attempts to violently break her and has her raped by multiple corrupt officials. Chun also keeps women who catch her eye as sex slaves, and any who attempt to escape are brutally punished. When one housekeeper attempts to save Ai Nu, Chun murders him, later becoming infatuated with Ai Nu herself. In the final battle, when mortally wounded, Chun reveals how truly monstrous is when she uses her last request for a kiss to poison Ai Nu, mocking her for her conscience and morality.

  • Mythica film series: Szorlok the Necromancer killed many people to find the Darkspore, which grants ultimate power over the death, even sacrificing his loyal acolytes to power it. Defeated, Szorlok went into exile, but later kills many to recover the separated fragments of the Darkspore. Upon taking center stage, Szorlok drains the life of his former friend and mentor Gojun Pye, raising armies of the undead to slaughter all in their path while Szorlok destroys the Gods to take their place, intending to make everyone worship him or die. When the heroine Marek resists him, Szorlok attempts to drain the life of every mortal on the planet to fuel himself, laughing how he will rule over a ''world of death.'

  • The Warrior and the Sorceress: Zeg the Tyrant, one of the film's main villains and the worst in the city. A slaver and murderer, Zeg regularly has people tormented and killed while enslaving others in a brutal trade. For entertainment, Zeg also regularly selects attractive slaves and has them placed in tanks to drown while he watches in amusement. When he finally has enough of his rival Bal Caz, Zeg massacres him and his men before unleashing his own soldiers on the city to massacre everyone until the city submits to the rule of Zeg.

    • Return of the Living Dead: Flack, a sadistic psychopath and former convict uses the zombie apocalypse as an excuse to indulge himself. Taking refuge in the Miller house with his partners, Flack rapes the young woman Sue Ellen, and reveals he intends to use the Miller sisters as 'zombie bait.' Flack and his partner Carter shoots a police officer, leaving his partner tied up so when Flack's victim reanimates, he'll devour his former friend. Upon fleeing, Flack throws a young man named Billy to the zombies and storms a mansion, killing the guards inside and taking the family hostage. Flack then throws them, mother, father and a ten year old to the zombies, gleefully watching as the zombies tear them apart while keeping the Miller sisters to rape at his and Carter's leisure.

Where exactly should Bhall be placed on the D&D page?

[down] Alright (funny how the one with the name BANE is the one with redeeming qualities). I'll just pothole Bhaalspawn crisis to the Baldur's gate franchise.

And that makes 15, enough for its own batch.

I think I'll have another EP up tomorrow. Maybe two. I'm gonna check with Scraggle to find out if any of my planned EP characters are truly worth it though.

Watched The River Wild tonight. I enjoyed it. A very late [tup] to Wade.

Also, her name's GAIL HARTMAN. Gale Weathers is from Scream. Oops.

  • The River Wild: Wade, along with his partners Terry and Frank, are trying to make it across the river with money they robbed from a bank. When Frank, whose also their guide, proves useless due to his wounds from the robbery, Wade forces a reluctant Terry to kill him. With no guide, Wade asks Gail Hartman to help them get across. When Gail finally becomes suspicious of Wade, she and her family try to leave them behind. However Wade catches them and beats her husband Tom, attempts to kill their dog, and slaps her son Roarke for telling them he had a gun. He then uses her family to blackmail Gail into taking them across the Gauntlet, despite the risk of their lives. When her husband escapes, Wade tries to kill him, but not before taunting him about how many seconds he has to left live. After a park ranger, who is also a close friend of Gail's, catches them and discovers their plan to ride the Gauntlet, he refuses to let them, so Wade kills him and jokes about it afterwards. After Gail gets them across the Gauntlet, Wade and Terry get caught in their trap and Gail turns their gun on them. Wade begs for his life, so Gail decides to shoot the last bullet in the air out of mercy. However the gun doesn't shoot, so Wade orders Terry to kill her family, despite her sparing his life.

That's not even comparable. With Goeth, he fires the gun and we can tell that it hit a man in front of him as the man is about to collapse.

"No" on Zsasz, "no" to Chocula for the reasons Footsteps listed, "no" on Graham.

Goeth's behaviour and Hans' cannot be compared in this context; one his holding hostages, one is a Nazi slaughtering Jews.

Apocalypse...good god I hate X-Man continuity. I will never be able to say that frequently enough. I will second that his relationship with Clan Akkaba is in no way redeeming. Each time they awaken them, he murders a member of the family for daring to be so weak as to require his help. He also enforces a strict, and nonsensical hierarchy on the family, with only those who can mimic his own power set being allowed to speak to him or assume a ruling position in the Clan, while those who have what he deems "lesser gifts" are kept out of his sight on pain of death for both they and anyone who might allow them near him. The Freudian Excuse thing is likewise nonsense, and he's in no way a WIE—he's made it pretty obvious that it's all about proving himself superior to everyone else, not actually advancing human or mutant evolution.

That just leaves the keeps his word thing and I genuinely don't know what to do with that, since there's plenty of comics where he doesn't. I think a nice big Depending on the Writer sign might be all we can do.

Don't we have an established policy for dealing with that? Depending on the Writer has always been an issue with comic book villains.

I vouch for slapping a writer-dependent tag on Apocalypse.

As an update, I think I'm going to forgo proposing Elizabeth. The fact her characterization really only amounts to a few evil smiles and a nasty act in the backstory makes her too tricky for me to say yes.

I am in the same boat as Scraggle about Elizabeth but I will EP her since my heart tells me she counts. My brain says she doesn't. I believe that any potential villain should be EP-ed. We allowed characters without dialogue before like Dark Souls villains and Untouched Inquisitor.

Xmen continuity is at it's best when part of an ongoing story. The later half of the 2000s was a good story because a.) It felt like a tale with a beginning middle and end point (mutants trying to survive, hope unambiguously was the heart) b.) it had stakes (Mutants on the edge) c.) had a climax (before it got swallowed in the event c.) dealt with old subplots (Rahne finally kills her bastard of a father, Bastion is revived and manages to ascend to Big Bad before Hope summers flambes his ass and d.) had the chance to develop the characters (Wolverine and Scott's debates on the path to take worked because both kinda had a point; wolverine is right to be worried about using children but scott's right that you can't be picky when your species is on the line.

To bad Av X fucked it all up (hence why I prefer Firebirds)

Here’s my write up for Bernie. Critic is always welcome so please don’t hold back.

Hopkins FBI: Bernie Berckson is the head of a evil organization, who has discovered a method of coming back from the death. This allowed him to “survive” his own execution and escape from prison after being sentenced to death for nuking California and killing 50,000 people. When Hopkin’s girlfriend Samantha gets too close to discovering his hideout, he has her captured and uses her to play a sick game with Hopkins. He has four random women murdered, hides their bodies all over the city and sends Hopkins on a macabre scavenger hunt where he has to perform various takes to discoverer the corpses with the promises that the last corpse will reveal Samantha’s location. Instead, however, he tricks Hopkins into killing his girlfriend by instructing him to shoot a paper target with the tied-up Samantha behind it. As a final insult Hopkins finds a video on her the corpse in which Bernie gleefully mocks him. What makes this especially heinous is that Bernie could’ve killed both Samantha and Hopkins at any point he wanted but instead decided to murder several innocent just so he could play his little game, proving that he truly is a monster.

Seems like Brother M'Thall is nearly a dozen [tup] and only two [tdown]. Here's the write-up.

Brother M'Thall is a prominent figure of the Venn race who holds a grudge against humanity. After M'Thall and the Venn invade Fate with the intent of stealing from the humans, M'Thall is blindsided by the humans' resistance when they start fighting off the Venn. Desperate, he set off a bomb that triggered the Great Cataclysm and nearly wiped out all of humanity. When M'Thall and the Venn wake up after hibernating for hundreds of years, M'Thall uses his forces to enslave most of the humans or convince them to work alongside him. When Reyn appears and causes trouble for the Venn right when M'Thall is nearly finished building a weapon that will destroy all of Fate for good, he sends his forces after him and Seph, hell-bent on killing both of them and anyone who gets in his way. He later kidnaps Seph and holds her hostage as bait, where he spends his time explaining how he wiped out almost all of humanity and rules over them now. Even after Reyn willingly gives M'Thall a component that will help him finish the weapon, he refuses to give up Seph, and instead tries to kill Reyn.
