Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous Post
Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

The Last Will thing does not *double* as a Kick the Dog moment. It was a Pet the Dog moment paired with a lesser Kick the Dog moment. I've got the feeling people are trying to circulate around everything just to keep Thawne on this list.

Again, he had no reason whatsoever making this video, other than giving Barry something that helps his family, just like he had no reason to tell Cisco that he grew fond of him before he killed him, with nobody listening, other than telling him he somehow regrets it.

For me, that`s as clear cut as it can get.

I don't like being accused of anything, so I'm deleted my earlier comment on Thawne and staying out of the discussion on his complete monster status.

I'm inclined to agree with a cut on Thawne now.

I'll give a yes to Serocco's example

Shall we cut Thawne now and add him back if he does in fact count, or keep him for now and the cut if necessary?

[tup] for Eraldo, but two things:

  • THAT was an effortpost; the next step would be the rewrite tongue
  • Aren't we waiting a month for works like these?

By the way, Assassins Creed Syndicate is coming out soon. It is stated that Jack The Ripper will appear in the DLC. I think he is one of those characters we should keep an eye on.

[up] As with all such characters, there is no point to bringing them up until the game is released and a few weeks have passed to give people a chance to play it and not unduly spoil the plot.

[up] Actually, we have a two week rule for movies… what is the rule for video games? Because they take longer than movies.

Well, let's put it this way. If you spoil something about the game in this thread, which I read, before I've had the chance to play it (assuming we're talking about immediately post-release and not a few weeks later), I may find you and inflict horrible punishments.

[up] What type of punishment? Lashes? Life imprisonment? Haha... just kidding. You will probably ban me. But don't worry I won't spoil anything. Jack The Ripper is in the DLC anyway; do you play DL Cs Fighteer?

Yes, but I haven't decided which parts of the game I'm going to buy, and it will probably release later on PC anyway. Just follow the two-week rule and we'll be fine.

Here's my write up for Arklem Greeth since he got enough [tup].

Transitions: Arklem Greeth is a powerful lich and the leader of the Arcane Brotherhood in Luskan. The de facto lord of Luskan, Greeth sought to expand his influence by weakening the Sword Coast and the Silver Marches. He made Luskan a haven for the very worst pirates and tried to dissolve the recent peace treaty between the orcs and dwarves, catching the attention of Captain Duedermont and Drizzt respectively. In the ensuing coup, Greeth displayed his evil by releasing ghouls to butcher the people of Luskan and killing thousands when he set his base to explode when he retreated. Even after losing, he was driven by revenge against Duedermont and destroyed supplies needed to feed Luskan's people and burned the ship, the Sea Sprite, to ensure the captain would die in the ruined city. His supposed love for his Dragon, Valindra Shadowmantle, was also made moot when he sent her off to die and then raised her as a lich, proving he cared for her only as a tool. While ultimately only a pawn for Jarlaxle and Kensidan, the titular Pirate King, Greeth was vile enough that every faction agreed that he needed to be eliminated.

Edit: A YMMV page would have to be created for the Transitions saga of The Legend of Drizzt since that series doesn't have a page, thus I can't place the entry right now. For reference, The Neverwinter Saga only has a YMMV page for Herzgo Alegni's Complete Monster entry.

Well, that 2-week rule is for popular works (something like, say, Kamen Rider probably wouldn't have to follow that?).

[up]To be fair, I did create Drakan's effort post from Runescape the day the quest came out without any spoiler tags, simply because no one in the forum plays the game.

The purposes of the two-week rule are:

  1. To avoid having the participants in this thread be exposed to spoilers for works they intend to read/view/play.
  2. To give the participants in the thread enough time to become familiar with a work in order to knowledgeably vote on it.

As with most such rules, it's a guideline, not written in stone. If nobody in the thread is likely to play/read/view a work due to its relative obscurity, then bringing it up earlier is acceptable, but you should ask first. At a minimum, the waiting period should be used to let people who might have an interest in the topic join the conversation.

They are not technically spoilers if you don't spoil anything for anyone. Besides, it's a moot point on that issue since the Runescape monster page is filled with spoilers for new players but has no spoiler tags.

Edit: I also advertise any candidate I'm about to make an effort on days in advance. If no objections come up, I went ahead and did it.

Kay I get that the Two Week rules applies to popular franchises and new movies/games, but where does episodic games stand ? I'm asking because Life Is Strange is episodic and has a very large fan base.
