This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

I request the removal of my suspension. I guess it was because I kept re-adding zero-context examples? I don't really get it because heaven knows I've tried to add context to the three examples I re-added today (two in Aizen and His Cohorts and one in Espada, Bleach Characters subpages) and explain why insulting Komamura was Kicking the Dog, how Ichimaru's accent doesn't fit him and why Yammy Largo is regarded as The Brute. I would really like an explanation about why that's not enough context, because I'm starting to think that I would have to write one thesis-length essay for each trope in order to re-add them safely. But I'm fully willing to cooperate, and that's why I request you this.

[up] Part of the problem is that most of the text you are adding as part of the example is not informative at all. Going over to Characters.Bleach Espada, I see things like this:

"A poster boy for" is pure Word Cruft. It conveys no useful information and forces the reader to slog through it to get to the meat. "He is, in fact, the main example" is the same thing. After that, you discuss his membership in a group (I presume) and then refer the reader to some other trope examples.

At no point in this description does it give any idea what The Brute is or how the character is an example. It just says that he is, with no corroborating details. The details are the entire point. Show, Don't Tell. Something like this (bearing in mind that I do not know or care about the work in question)...

  • The Brute: Talking isn't his strong suit, but he's the largest and strongest member of the team, and gets sent in when brute force is the best solution. In Episode 5, he tears the walls down to get into [character]'s office, ignoring the door.

Also, remember that The Brute is specifically about the evil counterpart to The Big Guy, meaning he must be part of a team of villains (or at least antagonists) in addition to the other criteria. If he's not explicitly part of a team of defined characters, then Dumb Muscle might be a more appropriate trope.

I still don't understand why I've been suspended. To my knowledge, the last time I got a natter notification was over a year ago, and as far as I can tell, I resolved it amicably with the person who posted it. Outside that one recent example I'm still unsure what behavior caused the suspension and thus, I don't know how to correct it.

Edit: In regards to the Big Hero 6 edit, I respectfully don't think my edit was natter. It probably could have been written better, but I was trying to explain how the trope was being played with rather than played straight, since Baymax's behavior wasn't actually violating the Second Law. It was that or delete the whole thing as "Not An Example," and I figured the former was less destructive.

~Mr Underhill: Your understanding is flawed. What you've been doing is the precise opposite of the correct thing. There is no courtesy in leaving a wrong example up. If it's wrong, fix it or remove it; that is your responsibility as an editor. The wiki is supposed to speak to the reader in a single voice, not a bunch of voices contradicting or elaborating on each other.

Also, you seem to be using excessive amounts of italics markup in your writing. That's unprofessional. You have a problem with sinkholes as well.

Okay. I'll admit I probably messed up my editing quite a few times. I'll try to do better this time.

OK, I understand now, it was more complex than I thought. Please let me edit again, I love fixing grammar too much to be like this and I won't repeat my mistake.

Can someone tell me why I'm still suspended? It happened over a year ago, right after I was insulting to someone who sent me a rude, unsolicited private message(I presume that's what the ban was for). I don't deny being insulting to the guy, but a 1 year+ suspension for being rude in a PM, when I wasn't the one who intiated the conversation, seems maybe a bit much.

~Mr Underhill and ~Lahmacun Kebab: Very good. I'll release your suspensions. If you have questions about proper wiki writing, use Ask The Tropers; people there will be happy to assist you. You can also ask in this forum topic.

~Aoirann: You were edit warring over a Critical Research Failure example on YMMV.Carreras Legions. Critical Research Failure has a specific definition that the examples you were adding did not meet. Yet, you continued to insist on them. This is extremely rude.

~D Shiflet: As we tell people over and over, suspensions don't expire until you come here to talk about them. The message you were sent was not rude; it was a standard notifier about an incorrect editing practice. We make those available as a courtesy so that tropers can help each other improve. This Troper, "I", and other forms of first-person writing are banned across the wiki (save for some very specific situations); you are required to write from a generic point of view.

Your response was unnecessarily belligerent, as were some of your previous PM's in response to various editing issues. That is unacceptable.

The message I received certainly was rude. But regardless, why does being belligerent in P Ms warrant a suspension? P Ms do not effect the functioning of the site. I was not being belligerent with the person on a page, I can see suspension over that as it could be disruptive to the site and I will certainly avoid doing that. If I offended someone in PM, they can block me themselves, can't they?

Reacting to a polite warning with outright hostility is usually a sign that said user is going to have attitude problems further down the line.

It wasn't a polite warning. But if being rude in P Ms is an issue I will be polite in them as well. I was accustomed to other forums where P Ms are not subject to the same rules as the main forum, barring things like spam/illegal activiites and such. If this site requires politeness in P Ms as well I will be polite, and if I receive a PM that is rude I will simply report it rather than being belligerent with the person.

The X Com edit you made contains first-person language, either by using "me", "I", or other personal pronouns, or the deprecated "This Troper" phrasing. Wiki articles aren't about you, they are about the topic. Please keep this in mind while editing.

Thanks for keeping the wiki cool!

I do not see how this message, which is automatically generated anyway, justified a disparaging comment about the sender's IQ.

If the person messaging me has not read what he is messaging about, that is most certainly rude. But again, in the future if I receive a rude message I will simply report the message and let the moderators handle it rather than being rude in turn.

~rafi: If you cannot post without making grammar mistakes, then we cannot trust you to edit the wiki. It's that simple.

~D Shiflet: Your attitude is incompatible with our wiki. Your suspension will not be removed.

I wish my editing suspension got lifted. On a unrelated note, the word "natter" sounds like the name of a Czech porn film taking place in a S&M dungeon!

[up] Hi there. We'd like you to take some time to study wiki markup and proper article construction. We love it when new editors jump in, but if you do so without paying attention to how things work, you force people to spend a lot of time cleaning up after you, such as on Growlanser IV Main Characters.

In particular, Text-Formatting Rules, How To Write An Example, and How To Create A Works Page are essential reading.
