Old Magnificent Bastard thread

Welcome to the Magnificent Bastard proposal thread! This is the thread where new Magnificent Bastard examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential mitigating features will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the MB subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite MB" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from other parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for MB equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, their goals and methodology, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some characters, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

How are they Magnificent?

This is the point where you highlight the character's brilliance. How to they convey their intelligence and charm to the audience? What makes them stand out among the crowd? What are their goals and how do they go about accomplishing them? This part welcomes a lot of creative thinking — not everyone has to be a Machiavellian Diabolical Mastermind to be worth considering here! This is also the time to showcase how the character can think on their feet if it's necessary.

How are they a Bastard? How are they not too bad?

What kinds of moral lines is this character willing to cross for the sake of their goal? Are they willing to let innocents die? Start wars? Commit crimes? The character has to show some kind of unscrupulousness in order to count as a "Bastard". Notably, this character does not necessarily have to be the villain, and an Anti-Hero can cross the line if they're immoral enough, but they have to be immoral somehow.

This is also the section where you then state your case for why they're not too bad. Perhaps their good intentions help mitigate their crimes. Perhaps others are shown to be much worse than them. Perhaps they're prone to Pet the Dog moments or are even fighting on behalf of loved ones. Whatever the case, there are certain lines that an MB can't cross, but as long as their villainy is reasonable for their goal, they can be considered.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

Ravok has the show reserved, and it only ended three days ago—we have a two week moratorium for discussions.

  • X-Men: Evolution:
    • Apocalypse
    • Gambit is a charming thief who joins the Acolytes as one of Magneto's more promising subordinates. Frequently acting as the group's voice of reason and lasting the longest in fights that see his allies otherwise unceremoniously battered, Gambit notably plays a major role in detaining a mystical guardian for Magneto, running the unstoppable beast over with a bus that he then explodes with his power. With Magneto's defeat and the disbandment of the Acolytes, Gambit sets off on his own and kidnaps Rogue to recruit her aid in rescuing his adoptive father from a rival crime family, gradually winning over and manipulating her into volunteering her services to navigate the multitude of traps surrounding his father. A dashing rogue with a heart of gold underneath his duplicitous methods, a vision of the future even shows that he will one day join the X-Men, putting his skills to use on the side of justice.

Well, now that I've got some time, I can finally propose my next candidate:

What's the Work?

I Woke Up A Vampire is a Family Channel/Netflix tween/teen series created by Thomas W. Lynch. It centers on 13-year-old Carmela "Carmie" Henley who wakes up to discover she has a bunch of unusual powers, and with the help of her friend Kev, they discover she's a Vampling (the offspring of a human and a vampire); a subspecies of a "Blended" (Half Human Hybrids between mystical beings or "Mythics"). At first, Carmie's thrilled to have these cool powers, but she quickly discovers being a Blended has its drawbacks, such as having to abandon either your human or Mythic side forever when you turn 16, or constantly being a target for this group of beings who want to hunt, and eliminate Blendeds, known as the Hunters. Especially a certain Hunter in particular who happens to be an approved MB already: Dylan Helsing, but especially have to work along side the show's most powerful Mythic and ultimate villain, who just happens to be Carmela/Carmie's own mother and my next candidate: The Shapeshifter ...or at least that's what we're led to believe... (but the Shapeshifter really is my next candidate)

Who Is The Shapeshifter?

As previously stated, The Shapeshifter is the most powerful of all the Mythics in the show due to her ability to transform into just about anyone and deceive people, which is apparently a vampire skill. She's also Carmela/Carmie's biological mother who gave Carmela her name, and abandoned her at a fire station when she was only 3 months old, where she was taken to Social Services and adopted by a kind mortal couple who took Carmela in and raised her. The Shapeshifter is infamous for causing lots of pain wherever she goes, and she wants the Blendeds to choose Mythic rather than human (when they turn 16), even if she has to force them to do so. She somehow got ahold of the Collector's daughter and is holding her against her will, only being willing to give her back if she can get a hold of several Blendeds for her plan. She wanted to collect as many Blendeds as possible so she could turn them evil, and form an army to try taking over the world and destroying mankind. Even trying to force her daughter Carmela to choose Mythics and aid in her scheme.

...or at least, that's how Season 1 and most of Season 2 portrays her, but the last couple of Season 2 episodes, paint her in a new light as we learn what really went down and her real agenda.

What Has She Done?

Not too long after Shapeshifter and her human husband gave birth to Carmela, a group of humans, or "Hunters" would go after them. Carmela's father stayed behind to try fighting the hunters, and bought some time for Shapeshifter to escape with a then-infant Carmela, only for the father to get killed by them (the hunters, not his family). Shapeshifter had to travel from city to city and never stayed very long, and her kind shunned her for marrying a human, so she couldn't stay with them. While Shapeshifter did abandon Carmela when she was only a baby, and give her to a human family to be adopted and raised by them, it was simply as a means to protect her and a last resort, to keep her hidden and safe until she was old enough to understand her destiny. Carmela was actually part of a prophecy, saying that she'd bring humans and Mythics together in peace. The Shapeshifter intended on leaving Carmela in the dark about her destiny until she came of age, as she didn't want her daughter to have such a large burden to carry before her time came.

And the part about her collecting Blendeds? She was actually trying to protect them from humans, especially the same humans that attacked her family.

Several years passed, and Carmela —now going by Carmie— had turned 13, and discovered her vampire powers for the first time: enhanced speed, enhanced strength, energy blasts, and flying... but not turning into a bat, sucking people's blood or being weakened by sunlight: y'know, the powers usually associated with vampires.

In Season 1, she made a deal with a mysterious humanoid man known as "The Collector": she claimed she had The Collector's daughter Jewel, and would return her in exchange for bunch of a Blendeds, but she kept him in the dark about what she had planned for them. The Collector hired an experienced hunter and MB (Dylan Helsing) to track down track down and catch the Blendeds. Dylan pieces together that Carmie was a Blended. Shapeshifter would occasionally appear personally to check up on the Collector for Blendeds when his comic book store closed — first she'd appear as a random person, then she'd change into her default form.

  • In "Mirror Mirror", she'd first appear as an old man before morphing into herself. The Collector would show Shapeshifter a Hugar that Dylan captured and stored away in a glass jar, but she was unhappy that he only had one Blended, reminding him of their deal, and threatening to take his daughter away from him forever if she didn't have more Blendeds within two days after the hunter's moon.
  • In "Uncovered", Dylan would start to have second-thoughts on continuing to hunt down Blendeds, due to genuinely becoming friends with Carmie and Madison (the latter being a She-Wolf), and not warning to hurting them. Though he reluctantly agrees to continue for the Collector's sake. That night, Shapeshifter turns up at his store under the guise of a little girl, then changes into her default form, asking if he had what she wanted. She was getting impatient with Collector's lack of progress and nearly disposes of him claiming she no longer had any use for him. Kev (who witnessed everything) reveals himself and makes the Collector reveal what was going on between him the Shapeshifter. Dylan manages to catch Madison for the Collector but quits shortly afterward.
  • In the season finale, "The Musical", Carmie and Kev track Dylan down, and confront him over Madison's disappearance. Upon Dylan learning that his blended hunting was allegedly helping the Shapeshifter create an army that would likely destroy humankind, he forms convoluted plan that involves him seemingly betraying Carmie to the Collector and the Shapeshifter, and Kev sneaking in from the back, and grabbing the shrunken Carmie and Madison, before the Shapeshifter shows up... as Jewel. After changing back into herself, Shapeshifter was furious over the Collector's uselessness, and when Dylan confronts Shapeshifter for supposedly corrupting Blendeds, she easily overpowers him, however, she assures Collector that his daughter was safe. Later that night, Carmie finally learns about the Shapeshifter being her birth mother.

In Season 2, Carmie's starting high school, and Shapeshifter felt Carmie had come of age and was ready to know about and fulfill her destiny. She sent a fellow Blended —a warrior fairy named Tristan— to go to the high school, find Carmie, befriend her, gain her trust, and eventually deliver Carmie to her when the time was right.

For most of the season, Carmie was still under the belief that her mother, the Shapeshifter, was evil and wanted to overthrow humanity with Carmie's help. (Not helping was the prophecy was misinterpreted for Carmela to seemingly destroy humanity) It got to the point were Carmie refused to view her as her mother. Carmie and Tristan (posing as a normal teenage boy) would bump into each other (literally) and Carmie would become fond of Tristan due his seemingly good attitude and even get into a relationship with him, while ignoring several obvious red flags towards Tristan.

In the season's penultimate episode, Tristan meets up with Carmie at Fan Con, and finally takes her to the Shapeshifter. There, the mother and daughter interact for the first time in years, and Shapeshifter explains the real reason she sent Carmie away, including the death of Carmela's birth father, and Carmela's part in the prophecy — the real prophecy, where Carmela would bring the humans and Mythics together... but then Tristan gets angry about Shapeshifter lying about her intentions for Carmie, as he truly wanted to overthrow/destroy humanity. He tries to attack the Shapeshifter, with the latter prepared to fight back against him, only for Carmie to take the bullet meant for her mother, much to the latter's concern. And when Tristan declared he wanted to lead the Mythics to destroy all humans, Shapeshifter furiously blasts him away.

In the season finale, Shapeshifter sacrifices most of her life and power to bring Carmela back, and when the latter regains consciousness, Shapeshifter insisted that she (the Shapeshifter) would have been able to take down Tristan on her own, and provides more backstory and context for her lack of contact until now. She warned Carmela that Tristan would endanger her friends to get to her and Carmela had to save them, even if it meant leaving her behind. Shapeshifter was weak from the transfer, and after fighting Tristan and saving her friends, Carmela finally introduces her adoptive family to Shapeshifter, her birth mother.

Is She Magnificent?

I'd say she is, considering just how immensely powerful and skilled she is. She's established herself to be one of — if not the — most powerful Mythic in the show's universe, and considering what we've seen of her, that's not a stretch. There's also her backstory involving her marriage with a mortal man, showcasing how she's willing to give humanity a chance and look past their flaws despite her kind disliking them, and the sheer lengths she would go for her daughter Carmela.

Even during her time where she's treated like a villain, she's a total scene-stealer, and pretty crafty with her shapeshifting abilities, as shown with all three times she impersonated random people to get into the Collector's store and catch him off-guard, and she got him to do her bidding by claiming to have his daughter (it's not made clear if she really held her hostage). She's also a skilled fighter, considering she was easily able to subdue Dylan —a trained Hunter, no less— which is no small feat at all. And I'm willing to bet would have been able to take down Tristan 1-1, that lady even tells Carmela this.

Is She a Bitch?

Yes, definitely. While she's ultimately a Well-Intentioned Extremist, there's a reason most of the show paints her as a villain. Namely she had a bunch of Blendeds — who are all teenagers — captured, shrunken, and stored in jars for her to use for her plan, and needlessly threatens and yells at the Collector constantly, by claiming he had her daughter. She even attacks him at one point. There's also a moment in the Season 2 finale where twins Jaydan and Aidan refer to her as a minor character in the Mythic comics, to which she tries to attack them with her powers, and would have possibly harmed them if her powers weren't weak at the time. This showcases that her evil overload act isn't 100% fake.

Yes to the Shapeshifter.

Alright, so to conclude the Golden Kamuy keepers... (When he's valid, I'll write them all up).

What's the work?
To quote my previous, we're probably plenty familiar with Golden Kamuy by now. A manga focused around the rowdy crew of Saichi Sugimoto, a disgraced Japanese soldier from the Russo-Japanese War, as he and his allies hunt down a secret stash of gold.

Well, they have an enemy... Toshizo Hijikata, former Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi and another party pursuing the gold. He is Sugimoto's greatest foe that isn't Tsurumi.

Right?

Who is Toshizo Hijikata?
Hijikata is one of many convicts, his death faked. A former Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi, Hijikata spends years as a model prisoner to lower his guards' awareness, slaughters them down to a man during his escape, and then recruits a loyal group of fellow convicts and fighters to help him in his search for the gold, with one goal: To create the "Republic of Ezo," a new nation that will take in the exiles and marginalized peoples of Japan. Using analysis, Hijikata leads his men on the path toward the gold. Observing events from afar and only inserting himself when it's of benefit, Hijikata uses tactics, disguises, and his skills as a commander to track both the heroes and their enemies, the 7th Division. Using his abilities with Sword and Gun alike, Hijikata manages to outfox and outwit multiple rivals. In addition, while Hijikata shows no hesitation in flaying their enemies alive to get their tattoos—and therefore the map to the gold—he's also levelheaded and frequently copies them down when he can, preferring the carrot to the stick as pertains to achieving his goals.

Eventually, Hijikata allies with Sugimoto's group; both out of convenience and because, in a surprising change of pace for his otherwise stern character, Hijikata owes a debt to the Ainu people for saving his life and wants to build Ezo partially to repay said debt—and he's a personal ally of Wilk's, who only refused to work with him directly due to being unsure of his identity during their imprisonment. Being a loyal, steadfast and damn ruthless ally, Hijikata assists with the break-in to Abashiri Prison by both giving information and directly aiding them, catching onto Kiroranke's true nature but left unsure of whether he's a traitor or not. From there on out, Hijikata is a permanent ally and mainstay of Sugimoto: The two groups join together, each hoping to find the gold. Using his deductive and tracking skills, Hijikata plays a major role in helping them find the gold... eventually, the final battle arrives on the train once the gold has been found.

Hijikata proves that he still has everything ready. Drawing his sword, Hijikata takes on as many opponents as he can—including a goddamn bear at one point—and finally goes down by taking a sword straight to the head—only to get up and keep fighting, living long enough that he can hand his katana—and his dreams—to Sugimoto.

Is Hijikata magnificent? Bad?
This is all obviously fairly truncated, but the short version is "Yes." Hijikata's a grade-A badass, a pragmatist, and, in short, an Anti-Villain (arguably Anti-Hero) who has no hesitation to dive into the thick of it but is also wholly willing to sit back and wait. He's one of the drivers of the search for the gold, his information and deductions are vital to Sugimoto's party, and he's a charismatic figure who leads his own branching group of convicts. Like Sugimoto, there's a lot to be said for his diplomatic skills and willingness to ally with any party, and it's also made clear he caught on to Kiroranke but wasn't utterly certain and therefore didn't act. He also ends his story giving his life and passing his dreams and blade onto Sugimoto.

Hijikata isn't perfect—others manage to occasionally get one over on him and he's not immune to slipping up—but he spends most of his screentime cool, collected, and unhesitant to do anything necessary. He prefers to take what he needs by diplomacy, but he will kill anyone he finds it necessary to; he kills all his guards and shows no reticence toward skinning people alive if he has to get their tattoos, only allying with Sugimoto once it's clear this work will benefit them both. He's somewhere in the spectrum of gray morality to be sure, but that never staunches his magnificence and, very much unlike Tsurumi, said brilliance is never undermined by sadism or hidden instability.

Conclusion?
Absolutely.

Alright, this too is a weird one, but here we go.

What is the work?

Rick and Morty in the Eternal Nightmare Machine is an animation/trailer done by Paul Robertson, where the titular Rick and Morty find themselves in a corrupt simulation, and need to fight their way to the Core to fix it in a very video game-esque style.

Who is Simulation!Gazorpazorpfield and what have they done?

He's the Garfield parody that Rick meets at around 8:30 in the video.

So, Gaz (I'm just gonna call him that for short) first appears shortly after Morty is captured, and Rick is on his way to save him. Gaz crashes down from the sky and silently gives Rick a "Bring It" pose.

What follows is a one-on-one fight between Rick and Gaz, with both of them landing solid blows on eachother, with Gaz adapting to whatever Rick throws at him, (as shown when he throws a Not-Pokeball when Rick does.) never losing his cool. Eventually, they stop fighting, with Gaz giving Rick a nod of respect before jumping away.

Later, when Rick and Morty are working on fixing the Core and are interrupted by an enemy, Gaz jumps back in to weaken the enemy with his attacks, before nodding at Rick again and jumping off once more.

How are they Magnificent?

Off the bat, Gaz one of the few enemies Rick and Morty meet within the simulation that actually matches them in power, and doesn't do so by being overpowered or huge; you get the impression he's a Badass Normal who has access to the same video game powers Rick and Morty have.

Secondly, he's a Graceful Loser who takes being matched by Rick in battle with stride, lets Rick pass, and even helps him at the end- instead of all the other simulations, which just die.

And thirdly, he's not shown having any kind of Villainous Breakdown or getting outplayed, the last we see of him is him helping out Rick- who he possibly sees as a Worthy Opponent- and then escaping.

How are they a Bastard? How are they not too bad?

Like all the other simulations, he's trying to stop Rick and Morty from fixing the core, but pulls a Heel–Face Turn by the end.

Final verdict?

Surprisingly, yeah, I'm feeling [tup] to Simulation!Gazorpazorpfield.

Yes to Hijikata and...I think that version of Gazorpazorpfield, giving it a watch. He's a small character but kind of audaciously, hilarious awesome in his way.

Damned to Hell for his experiments on the poor after an accident aged him to his death, Loopty approaches the I.M.Ps, paying them in advance so they can kill his business partner, Lyle Lipton, and stop him from getting all the money from their shared work. Once Lyle dies, Loopty, overjoyed, thanks them for reuniting them, having lied about his motive; in truth, he simply wanted to see his best friend again, and is content to be reunited in Hell with him.
