I don't believe it's reasonable to argue that Ishmelga is a Giant Space Flea from Nowhere.

It's introduced at the end of the previous game, we already know there are seven total Divine Knights, and the fact that it's the Curse of Erebonia is revealed around halfway through IV. That's The Dog Was the Mastermind at worst.

TBH that whole entry needs to be rewritten, not just the part about Ishmelga. It's blatantly one of those "WHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE (but some people liked it tho)" negative Broken Base entries.

Double post, but now that I think about it, I think that entry I brought up might be a misplaced Contested Sequel entry. So I think we should rewrote and move accordingly (if it hasn’t).

Any other opinions on the other Broken Base entries?

Not much of a forum poster but I was taking a look at Osborne's page and saw that some of the tropes are kind of a melting pot of content post CS3, pre CS4 and post CS4 making it slightly awkward. Therefore, some of the content are oddly written in hindsight or outright wrong.

Below are some I noticed and would like some opinions on : Expect some CS4 spoilers (and very slightly about Reverie)

    Abusive Parents
  • Current description : Giving his son a Neck Lift and telling him that it's time to bathe the world in despair is probably not gonna win him any father of the year awards.
  • Issue : This description just breathe the hype of the CS3 cliffhanger but I believe that Osborne and Rean's relation can be more meaningfully described.
  • Proposed change : Osborne's actions towards Rean are not gonna win him any father of the year award. Once he reveal their relation to him, Osborne waste no time strong-arming him into the Imperial Army' service to assist in the occupation of Crossbell and the Northern War, turning him into a phony war hero and emotionally wrecking him. He eventually take a step further in Cold Steel III by endangering Rean's students and setting Altina (Rean's protegee and sole emotional support during the above events) to die in order to launch the Great Twilight. Despite the issues between them, Rean takes all this in stride once he learns the truth behind his father's actions in Cold Steel IV and ultimately gain a much more nuanced view of his father.
    I Let You Win
  • Current description : It's made clear in Cold Steel IV that Osborne wants Rean to win in order for him to survive that by the time after his final battle occurs, Osborne tells Rean how to eject Ishmelga out of his body so they can deal with him once and for all.
  • Issue : Okay so this one is a bit unclear because it's open to interpretation (and a major part of why i would like advice) about Osborne. But after viewing Osborne's episode in Reverie and rewatching Cold Steel IV, I got the impression that while it's obvious that Osborne wasn't trying to win the World War, he was determined in winning the Final Rivalry in order to personally send Ishmelga to hell with him. My interpreation is correlated by Rean's statement about his role in the Twilight merely being a backup plan and Osborne's statement during his Episode about being unwilling to thrust such a fate on his son but at the same time, viewing giving all he got during their fight as a way to give his son a final test.
  • Proposed change : Zigzagged. It's made clear in Cold Steel IV that Osborne isn't putting his all in the conflict, notably by his refusal to completely quell any opposition he might face, like with his refusal to kill any of the guests aboard the Pantagruel, even if it would advantage him greatly by taking out key parts of other countries opposition. This is evidently because Osborne don't want to drag Zemuria to war, and as such, endeavor to minimize the damage to other countries power structure in order for them to restore once the Great Twilight is over.
However, Osborne is putting his all in winning the Rivalries, because he is determined to taking Ishmelga with him to the grave once the Great One is materialized. Linked to that, is because the other challenger is Rean, and the alternative would lead to his son taking on what he view as his burden if he were to fail.
    Xanatos Gambit
  • Current description : During the Civil War, it really doesn't matter what anybody else does or even whether Osborne himself survives because he still wins. Best case scenario: (which happened) is that he survives and the Noble Alliance is neutered as a political and military force, he gets his revolution and Crossbell is added to the Empire as a new occupied territory. Worst case scenario: He dies but becomes a martyr to the reformist cause which the Ironblood continue in his name and the Noble Alliance is still crushed because none of the factors contributing to their downfall required his personal survival.
  • Issue : Incorrect.
  • Proposed change : In hindsight, the October campaign is this. Despite being taken aback by Crow's assassination attempt, all the events from this point onward essentially benefit him. If the Noble Alliance manage to come out on top, his second in command Rufus is basically at the driver's wheel of a group too proud to entertain the notion that he's playing against them and clearly not competent enough to prevent him from taking complete control. If Vita's plot to enact a Pseudo-Rivalry between Rean and Crow works, this is actually a really good news to him, because it mean he won't be forced to enact the World War in order to orchestrate the Rivalries. If the Imperial Army wins, the Noble Alliance is essentially gone as a political threat, allowing him to swoop in and secure his complete control over Erebonia.

[up] I can't say about the I Let You Win and Xanatos Gambit entries, but I agree with the rewrite up for Abusive Parents. From what I recall, Rean doesn't automatically like his father more, he now has a more nuanced view of him.

When referring elemental sepith, do we capitalize the first letter? Cause looking it up on the Trails database (ex Earth elemental) I got mixed signals (a few are capitalized while others are not).

Double post; Per the Complaining thread this entry in EndingFatigue.Video Games due to being bashy. Since it relates to Trails, best to ask here.

  • The developers clearly never learned from this as The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie has, just for the final boss fight of the main game, taking up to at least 2 hours to finish the game (more if the RNG hates you thanks to a certain Soldat fight). First, after entering the control room at Retributive Tower, players are treated with a long cutscene just introducing who was really behind all the events of the main story. Then the first phase of the Final Boss fight happens that requires both Rean and Lloyd to be in the party. Then the next phase starts where players now have to use the soldats to fight off against the boss who summoned the completed version of the Seven Divine Knights which consists of four phases with the first three phases having the boss delivering a Curb-Stomp Battle after reaching certain damage thresholds. After finally defeating it, the players are then treated to a very long cutscene and when that scene is over, players still have to fight one more fight where Lloyd is a required party member but players aren't allowed to use Rean, Crow, and Rufus for this fight. And once players think this is over, the player has to traverse through the final dungeon again and reach the boss room before the game is over. Thankfully for the last portion, no enemy will spawn in allowing players to just head straight over. Only after the player finally reaches the room is the main story finally over. Also, there is post-game content which adds even more floors to the True Reverie Corridor and a new Daydream stone that serves as the Sequel Hook for the future Calvard arc.

For the Characters pages, should military characters be listed under their introductory rank or their current rank?

Right now, for example, Zechs and Olaf are listed as Lieutenant General, but they both got promoted to General between Cold Steel II and III.

I’ve seen a decent amount of characters in character pages getting moved to new categories due to new events.

Alright, I've gone and updated everybody to their current military ranks as of Reverie, and for characters who got promotions added a small history of their rank where applicable.

I like that Principal Vandyck is an honorary General of the Army. That technically makes him the highest-ranking officer ever seen in the series thus far.

So in regards to Rufus... It turns out that there are a lot of problems on his folder. These include (but not limited to) text walls, natter and tropes that fit better as narrative tropes.

The Character Development was the biggest text wall, which I brought up multiple times in the Wall of Text thread but it always got ignored.

So I found this on Characters.Trails Series Erebonia Nobility

  • North Ambria had its economy so crippled by the Salt Pale that it was reduced to what in modern terms would be called a least developed country, and the state was forced to rely on its Jaeger Corps for income. After being annexed as an Imperial Province after the Northern War, it was stated Imperial investment in its infrastructure, in particular efforts to desalinify North Ambria's soil, allowed for newfound economic resurgence and stability in the region that many citizens consider a vast improvement over their previous state of affairs. As such, upon regaining independence, North Ambria likely emerged as a far more stable and livable country.

I don’t actually remember if North Ambria ever got independence from the Empire. But I wanted to ask here because it’s likely I forgot about it or just remembered the details wrong.

IIRC when last heard of there was extensive debate over whether to seek independence, precisely because of what the entry discusses. Although my knowledge of the series only goes for what I've seen in English playthroughs, so through the end of Reverie alone.

So with the release of The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails coming up this month, I think it's time for this page to get a nice needed scrubbing. ZCEs, capitalization errors, and the fact that some of the examples are incomprehensible to anyone not familiar with Trails or of Falcom's other games. So once the game comes out, we should clean up the page (plus update it with the any Dub Name Changes if need be).

[down] It's fine, the English version isn't out yet. So it's best to wait until the game is out.

Someone changed an edit I made on Rufus Albarea's page I had originally put down an entry as follows

  • Ambiguously Absent Parent: Jusis confirmed that his(Rufus') mother is still alive in the present day, but she has never been seen on-screen or even mentioned after that, outside of Rufus revealing that she had conceived him from A Family Affair with Helmut's brother (who was subsequently banished shortly after and was thus also never seen or mentioned outside of him revealing his orgins).

Then was changed to this:

  • Missing Mom: Rufus' mother only gets mentioned when he reveals that she was the duke's ex-wife and had conceived him from A Family Affair with Helmut's brother. She was banished afterwards and her current fate remains unknown.

There are a few mistakes there: 1. His mother was mentioned once before The Reveal of him being conceived from that affair where she was confirmed by Jusis to still be alive in the present(which he wouldn't know if she had been banished) but she's never been named or has appeared on-screen. 2. At no point is she ever explicitly stated to be the Duke's ex-wife as there's no mention of him divorcing her in canon(afaiw). 3. The only one explicitly stated to be banished was his real father, not her.

I'd change it myself, but don't want to risk getting blamed for making it an edit war. Any suggestion on how to fix it?

[up] I was the one who rewrote the entry, mostly because it was misuse of AAP (which is about a parent who is explicitly not mentioned so even small references don't count). Unfortunately, I haven't played the previous cold steel games in a while so my memory is admittedly a little rusty so I thought the info from the previous entry was wrong. I do think AAP might apply to Jusis's mother since I don't remember her being mentioned at all (when compared to Rufus' mom). But I could be wrong on that.

Edit: Rewrote the entry again with info from the previous entry, hopefully it's better now.

Edit 2: I also added a folder for the wife. Added in the info mentioned [up].

Jusis outright admits his mother died when he was young in Bareahard, then in the second game hiss perm donor outright compares him to his mother so she doesn't count as AAP by your reasoning.

Double post but I wanted to bring up some Franchise Original Sin entries on the main YMMV page. I originally asked on the FOS cleanup but got no response, so I think it might be better to ask here for more fandom input:

  • Franchise Original Sin: Some problems players have with later entries, especially the Cold Steel games, were present since the beginning, but weren't quite as bad about it:
    • The Clueless Chick-Magnet protagonist. In the Sky games, while Joshua was prone to comically misunderstanding what his female companions are talking about and gets a fair amount of admirers, it was never the focus of his interactions. He genuinely does not have feelings for anyone but Estelle, their romance is heavily integrated into the plot, and he can't understand why he's so often flirted with. Most importantly, Estelle was the main viewpoint character, and Joshua's girl troubles were secondary to their development. In later arcs, both Lloyd and Rean are heavily flirted with by any and all available romantic partners, who will invariably confess a hidden infatuation with the protagonist if you dig deep enough. Lloyd had it bad enough with three, maybe four, potential suitors, but then Rean had to top him with at least eleven. What's more, the many potential options have divided fans on which, if any, should be picked, and who got the most development among them.
    • The Cold Steel games got a lot of flak for how Easily Forgiven Crow was by the rest of Class VII. Despite being the leader of the terrorist group responsible for starting a civil war, Rean and the rest of Class VII were willing to forgive him and welcome him back to Class VII. However, this willingness to forgive villains applied to both the Sky trilogy and Crossbell duology. Estelle was willing to forgive Renne and Joshua for their actions as Enforcers of Ouroboros, while Lloyd was willing to forgive Ian for the murder of his brother Guy and conspiring with the Crois family. However, the different circumstances of these villains has made them less controversial than Crow. Estelle was willing to forgive Joshua and Renne because they were both mentally broken Child Soldiers, not to mention that Joshua was also brainwashed by Weissman into doing his bidding so he wasn't in full control of his actions. And while Lloyd did forgive Ian for killing his brother, the perpetrator was still arrested and sent to prison, so Lloyd's forgiveness wasn't an easy get-out-of-jail-free card. Thus, Rean and the rest of Class VII going on and on about bringing Crow back so he can graduate seems naive at best, considering they barely bring up any atonement or punishment for his actions even though Crow does eventually end up paying for his sins and doesn't get off scot-free either.
    • The ending to Trails in the Sky FC began a trend in the series by ending on a Wham Episode cliffhanger: Professor Alba reveals himself to be Weissmann, a high ranking member of Ouroboros and the real instigator of the game's events, and also reveals that Joshua was an Ouroboros Enforcer. Joshua knocks out Estelle and leaves her to try and take down Weissmann himself. When the series would attempt a similar cliffhanger in the ending of Cold Steel 1, Crow assassinates the chancellor, Noblist forces seize Heimdallr and attempt to take Thors, and Rean is forced to flee and leave his classmates, the move was more contentious. Much of this is due to the nature of everything leading up to the endings in both games. While Sky FC's ending reveal is sudden, it comes after the main driving forces for the plot (Estelle and Joshua becoming bracers and the Liberl Army Coup) have been resolved enough to give the player some feeling of accomplishment, and making the ending cliffhanger more of a Sequel Hook setting up the story of the next installment. Cold Steel 1's ending, on the other hand, comes at a point when so many plot threads are either still left dangling or have been barely resolved and the player having accomplished so little that it feels as though the plot is just starting, and thus making the cliffhanger feel not so much a tease of the next installment as much as demanding the player pay for a full other game to get the rest of the story.
