Misused (single prop crowner 7 April 2021): Up To Eleven

I'm wondering should Up To Eleven even be made into a redirect and just cut it instead, technically it has nothing to do with Exaggerating a trope and is just misused badly that way. There are also the already mentioned problems of people still using it.

I never said anything about wicks, and I don't see why redirecting would allow leaving them alone while turning into a Fan Speak/disambiguation page would forbid that (in fact, Completely Missing The Point is a disambiguation page with over 1,000 wicks). If this is made a Fan Speak page, I'd be in favor of leaving the wicks and removing on-page examples while transplanting the definition elsewhere.

Because it still wouldn't be being used properly in context. It wouldn't be the Fan Speak example, it'd be a troper Verbal Tic. Exaggerated Trope is the most fitting other trope that would create the least amount of misuse still floating around on the wiki.

Plus, if it becomes a disambiguation at the same time, that'd mean it can't have wicks at all, because disambigs can't have wicks and that's the whole point of them.

As for , that's an extreme up-hill battle to fight. We're not even done with Adorkable yet; it'll take years to delete every Up To Eleven wick and make tropers stop using the trope.

Is it too early to make a crowner? The options so far seem to be:

• Redirect to Exaggerated Trope; make a new trope for "Gauge Inflation"
• Cut Up To Eleven
• Turn Up To Eleven into a Disambig
• Turn Up To Eleven into Fan Speak and clean up example-list trope wicks

Regarding cutting, the mods can cut it before dewicking is complete, since the Related page stays intact. That's how Five Bad Band was handled, since otherwise dewicking it would have been very hard.

I'm not in favor of cutting; I'm just discussing how it could be done if we do end up doing that. I'm leaning toward redirecting.

Edit: Also, when I brought up the Fan Speak idea, I meant making it a definition page for the term's usual definitions (mainly the secondary one), which is probably what influenced our page's use as a Pothole Magnet, rather than anything having to do with troper tics. That said, that's no longer my preferred choice.

What does the option "Turn into Fan Speak" exactly mean?

I think it means that it'll become a common term to describe something in fiction, and that it is Definition Only.

I meant a definition-only page for what the phrase "up to eleven" usually means. The Wikipedia article I linked to has the definitions.

If we are to make the Gauge Inflation trope, let's focus on the on-page examples for Up To Eleven and use any of those that apply. That should make it a little easier.

Remember, Administrivia.TRS Wick Cleaning exists, so we can always close the thread after dealing with some of the wicks.

If you're looking at building a Gauge Inflation trope, might want to compare and contrast with Readings Are Off the Scale.

Again though, do we even really have to worry about the wicks if we redirect this? Most of them will be correct, so then it's just a matter of moving or removing ones that aren't, and that's just something we can do at our leisure; we don't need to go through all 30K wicks.

Yeah, I was under the impression redirecting didn't necessitate wick cleaning since 30k for a current pothole magnet is a Sisyphean task.

Me, I suspect it will just draw in more sinkholing if the wicks aren't cleaned.

While that might be true, I feel like it'd take an entire year of all of us here doing no other TRS or Wiki Work to make a dent and stop people from potholing it. Maybe we can make a cleanup thread to go through the pile at a slower pace (might already have one), but to put it in perspective, we're not even done with things like Adorkable yet because the Characters/ section is seeming almost insurmountable, and that's only 3K tropes, a tenth of what we have here.

So my assumption was that redirecting this to match the most common form of usage would make the potholes more acceptable. I mean, is there actually anything inherently wrong with pothole magnets if they're used appropriately? I've been looking at this like the main issue is the severe trope decay, and IMO if we fix that then most of the problems are automatically resolved.
