I think the overall sinister aspect of the character makes for a poor expression of the trope...he doesn't look like he's smiling so much as grimacing or leering.
I'm not particularly fond of current, but OP looks more like a creepy grinning guy than someone smiling because he's about to lose it.

That just looks like someone badly trying to fake a smile.
Check out my fanfiction!I think 4 is too much in the vein of Stepford Smiler.
...maybe? Not really sure that it's an improvement.
8's an improvement.
From Black Mirror: Nosedive: Lacie◊
OH MY GOD; MY PARENTS ARE GARDENIIIIINNNNGGGGG!!!!!8's pretty good. I don't get "broken" from at all.
I could go with 8.
(Annoyed grunt)Still prefer the current.
Check out my fanfiction!^ What conveys the broken part in current?
Asuka's expression is caught between shock and excitement from running into her mother's hospital room to tell her she's become an Eva pilot only to find her mother's hanged body, but I admit that if you haven't seen Evangelion, it's subtle enough that you might not be able to catch it. Shinji's going-insane smile in 8 is more clear, certainly.

8
This signature says something else when you aren't looking at it.Her eyes, mouth, and facial expression do not match up, so there's some dissonance going on there. The colours and lighting also emphasise that. I've not seen Evangelion, and I think it's clear.
8 looks more like plainly insane to me.
Check out my fanfiction!8 looks less like "broken smile" and more like Laughing Mad.
Look at all that shiny stuff ain't they prettyI think there might be some need to clarify the meaning of Broken Smile, since the suggestions all show something different. The current is just an creepy awkward smile, 8 shows someone horrified I think, my suggestion is of someone who was a Stepford Smiler becoming broken at the concept of that, which obviously I think is closest to portraying the trope whilst others apparently think craziness does...
OH MY GOD; MY PARENTS ARE GARDENIIIIINNNNGGGGG!!!!!^ IMO, your example in 11 does not go beyond Stepford Smiler. In the actual scene Lacie is testing out a fake smile in her mirror. There' was no broken part involved.
Yeah, I get Stepford Smiler from the pic in 11.
That's ok, there's still the question on what the definition is/what we're looking for in a picture.
OH MY GOD; MY PARENTS ARE GARDENIIIIINNNNGGGGG!!!!!The third paragraph of the description is quite specific on the scenario:
Observations:
- The current description wants that the starting point is a Stepford Smiler face, not a genuine smile. Too narrow?
- The breaking/freezing is attributed to a void of emotions out of shock. New emotions have not yet registered with the muscles in the face. But what about situations where a character tries to put on/maintain a Stepford Smiler face but it fails because the negative emotion they try to cover up is overwhelming? A good portion of examples run on this scenario.
Crown Description:
Nominations for replacement images:
Asuka is witnessing a traumatic event after a day of happiness here, and her smile seems to be broken, but I think that it's rather unclear when taken out of context. Previous thread was rejected for lacking a replacement suggestion, so here's the one with the Caretaker from Darkest Dungeon, who is more deranged-looking than Asuka is and has Hidden Eyes, as the trope description says:
