OK, if this is truly a Trope, then what would a proper non-ZCE example look like?
That partially depends on exactly how broad the page is intended to represent "words on the screen".
- Does SDH count as CC or not?
- Do regular English Subtitles count as CC or not?
- Does Rear Window and similar devices used in theaters count?
- The subtitles provided by Netflix for streaming Breaking Bad introduced censoring on "bad language" compared to the audio track. While the English audio would say "shit" or "fucking", the subtitles present "——" and "———-".
- Science And Futurism With Isaac Arthur is a YouTube program whose narrator, at the start of every episode, reminds his audience to turn on the captions to help understand his content despite his speech impediment.
- Sing does not provide a CC track, but it does include Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Regular dialogue is presented in a basic typeface with proper capitalization, a few sound effects are presented in all capital letters and enclosed in square brackets, most of the songs are noted with Eighth Notes and square brackets enclosing the musical genre, while the one line of singing dialogue is written in italics and enclosed in Eighth Notes.
- The YuYu Hakusho DVD provides two different English subtitle tracks, but no Closed Captioning. The first track is the same translation as the English audio, and presents the Opening Narration in italics. The second English track is a different translation from the English audio; it also translates the opening Title Card and Episode Title Card. Romanized words, Inner Monologue, and Opening Narration are all presented in italics.
Hooked.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanOkay, so it's 15 yeas to convert Closed Captioning into a Useful Note. I think that's enough.
What do we do now?
Looks safe to call. Let's do it.
she/her | TRS needs your help! | Contributor of Trope ReportI still don't have an answer to my earlier questions:
- Does SDH count as CC or not?
- Do regular English Subtitles count as CC or not?
- Does Rear Window and similar devices used in theaters count?
So that means we're done here?
The page has been converted to a Useful Note, and the Main now redirects to it.
I also checked all of the wicks; deleting or changing as appropriate. Unless someone plans to give me advice on improving the description, I suppose the thread can be closed.

Crown Description:
Vote up for yes, down for no.
Those dialogue cards were added to Silent Movies because you couldn't hear what the actors were saying. Why does the change to Closed Captioning mean Dialogue is no longer part of the plot?
