I like the Thorgal cover.
Free Willy's more iconic; I say we may as well go with that.
If Free Willy's "more iconic", I'm going with Thorgal.
Check out my fanfiction!More iconic also means more users will connect with it and understand the meaning. for Free Willy.
Not concerned with how iconic FW is, but it gets the trope across succinctly, so for now I prefer that.
I'd debate the iconic claim. Thorgal is a comic series that's been running continuously for 40 years. >_> Point is, if someone's going to say its more iconic, I'm going to ask for numbers.
Free Willy has a box office return of $77,698,625 (USA) and the average ticket price in 1993 was $4.14 which suggests that roughly 18,767,783 Americans saw the movie in theaters that year, giving it the 11th highest gross that year. And that is ignoring international and rentals.
So, what are the distribution numbers on Thorgal?

This signature says something else when you aren't looking at it.A crowner may be the appropriate solution at this point.
And hooked, thanks.
I'm going with Free Willy because it pretty much gives the trope to the tee. Hell, even the title is spoiler if you think about it lol
I'm downvoting Free Willy. As much as I think it is a good example, it will create a duplicate image issue with the work page and as far as I can tell all the DVD covers and movie posters use that image.
This signature says something else when you aren't looking at it.^ I specifically addressed that issue in the OP.
You've got roaming bands of armed, aggressive, tyrannical plumbers coming to your door, saying "Use our service, or else!"Edit: I wanted to see it at wiki size before I decided. I will withdraw my earlier concerns

This signature says something else when you aren't looking at it.Okay, I'm good to use that on the work page.
I don't think the Free Willy cover is a good example, because if you're not familiar with the work, you wouldn't know it's about releasing a captive orca to the ocean. For what it's worth, the movie could be about a wild ("free") orca who befriends a kid, so the cover wouldn't be a spoiler. Whereas the Thorgal cover shows the death of someone who's clearly important to the other character... Which makes it easier to see that it's a spoiler without knowing the work, because major character deaths are almost always spoilers.

Good point.
But without knowing the work how are we supposed to know that is a "major" character.
Taken to the logical extreme, without knowing the work how are we supposed to know that the scene on the cover didn't happen in the first minute of the work or even didn't happen at all?

This signature says something else when you aren't looking at it.Honestly, I think this second guessing is presuming too much ignorance on the part of the viewer. Free Willy has the advantage that it combines a Spoiler Title with a Spoiler Cover. Plus, he's jumping across a pier into the sea. I don't think it's difficult to connect the dots.
You've got roaming bands of armed, aggressive, tyrannical plumbers coming to your door, saying "Use our service, or else!"I agree with 18. I am not familiar with Free Willy, and that image doesn't really make sense to me. On the other hand, "death equals spoiler" is straightforward regardless of how major the character is.
Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan.Votes bump; two in the green, one with a pretty substantial lead.
We've seen a lot of characters who apparently died and are featured, yet is actually insignificant.
Googling "spoilery covers" seem to net me with some hilarious stuff, particularly "team/character wins" is the climax yet it is the cover
alternatively, should back covers count? because this one outright spoils Khan

Ok, Invictus is pretty funny, though I think it's kinda dampened by the Foregone Conclusion nature of the ending. If that's not a problem, we could go with something like Shakespeare's Julius Caesar or Jesus Christ Superstar◊.
I think back covers qualify too, but a blurb relies so much on text that almost anything else would be better.

Crown Description:
Nominations for replacement images:
I'd like to suggest the poster for Free Willy for this trope, since the "freeing" part only happens at the very end. This would however require changing the pic on the work page—I think a collage of the entire series◊ would work better (cropped to the right half). Alternatively, here's the cover◊ of a Thorgal album showing the death of a major character.
