[up][up][up][up]yes, I do, it’s just that those people likely won’t give a shit about whatever game brand is on those machines. It also worth watching this video, which touches on Japanese fans perspectives:

[up]On the PS 4 Japanese Digital Store, when it's competition in the top 5 are two low budget anime games, Monster Hunter World, (which has been out for a month and already done gangbusters) and Nie R Automata (A year old game). There's also no numbers on the rankings. I really don't think that statement means much for the game.

Yeah, Dai Gyakuten Saiban was also top 1 of the japanese charts the week it came out, and it didn't stopped it to be an utter commercial flop that almost sunk the would be sequel.

And it was a game released only in japan, with widely different sales expectations.

it's competition in the top 5 are two low budget anime games

Those "low budget anime games" are games featuring animu girls with big breasts. Those sell like hot cakes.

Nie R Automata (A year old game)

Which has a massive following and remarkable production values for a game that isn't triple AAA.(and an action heroine with a shapely rear)

Monster Hunter World

Is this seriously a benchmark for, "if you're not selling more than this game than you've failed commercially?" Genuinely asking because I've yet to hear an unflattering review of MHW. note

I'm not arguing Survive it's not underperforming, but for the reason implied, "well it's low on all of the other charts, and the one chart where it seems to be doing well it's behind these other games that cater to broad audiences." I mean, it's like saying Metal Gear Rising performed poorly because it didn't sell as well as Animal Crossing New Leaf or Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon.

Survive is the type of game that the Japanese gaming market is known for (grinding, real money purchases etc.). Doesn't particularly surprise me.

It would seem that normally, a Metal Gear game would obliterate this kind of competition.

So if Survive can barely keep up with the competition in the Japan market (which looks to be the case), then that really should be a sign that yes, not even Japanese audiences (aka, Konami's alleged primary focus) are into this game and ergo, they should be thinking, "we done goofed."

All of that being said, how long do you guys think it'll take for Konami to form a response to the circumstances?

Or rather, how do normal Japanese game developers respond to these kinds of lackluster performances? Because odds are that whatever is the normal course of action, Konami's probably going to do the opposite...

@Soble

You don't seem to understand. It's not that those other games aren't as marketable or appealing as a Metal Gear Game would be. It's that in the case of Nie R Automata and Monster Hunter World, they've already had a year and a month respectively to sell to most of the people who want the game. Monster Hunter itself sold millions in Japan, so of course sales are tapering down. note  Looking into it, Senran Kagura: Peach Beach Splash is also a game that's almost a year old. Meaning the only game that would potentially be a high seller at this point is Girls Un Panzer. And if anything, being surrounded by releases that are that old, and likely having way lower numbers doesn't seem like a good sign for it or Survive.

[up]yeah, people did. you can find a lot of them on /r/metalgearsolid along with all the people downvoting that group for being "Konami shills" and then getting called "Kojimbodrones" in turn. things that are So Okay, It's Average do weird things to communities, man. (keep in mind the supporters openly acknowledge the game is mediocre, but still like it anyway because Survive managed to avoid being So Bad Its Horrible)

i was thinking about getting it, but i didn't. not to join the frothing at the mouth hate bandwagon, but for the more practical reason that i already have three other grind games on my plate and i don't think i can handle a fourth, honestly.

[up] That's understandable, I bought the game when the beta is finish and I think it's ok-ish, not a fanfare but a good game for co-op and a decent survival system.

and yeah the community is a bit split due to kojima vs konami debate but I'm pretty fine with konami making their own game, do anybody remember the original ending of MGS 4?

And I completely gave up on GTA V due to cheaters, not gonna give it a second chance

Necro.

Yeah, didn't think this would come back, did you?

Konami's released their earnings report and are having their most financially successful year with $2 billion.

...But there’s apparently no report on Metal Gear Survive's performance.

Gee, I wonder why... evil grin

For the record, i'm pretty certain that none of their financial boon is due to their games. Well okay, maybe one game.

And maybe their soccer franchise is still pulling in a profit. Those usually sell respectably no matter what due to having a fanbase that reliably buys the latest iteration, even if the game is mediocre. Same thing happens with the Madden and NBA games.

For those who are interested in seeing someone give a good defense of Metal Gear Survive, check out the video below:

For those who didn't care to watch... a brief TL;DR summary.

  • The game apparently took a lot of inspiration from Snake Eater, at least for the singleplayer world. Namely, how progressing through the hazardous fog requires players to proceed cautiously, ensure they have sufficient supplies to enter and return, hunt wildlife, and to carry enough rations to stay healthy on the battlefield. Health can be returned quickly via LIFE injections, but those affect your score in the multiplayer mode and are hard to find during Singleplayer.
  • The reviewer feels that most journalists didn't stick with the game for very long. He notes that you end up running into more enemy types and challenges once you hit the 'Africa' region, and that the speed at which your hunger and thirst meters run out was a bit exaggerated.
  • The co-op mode is hands down the best part of the game: crazy fun on higher difficulties if you have a reliable friend to play with.
  • Updates have added additional boss fights with some considerable challenge to them, both in the singleplayer areas and in the co-op mode.

[up]Of course journalists didn’t stick with it. I think the problem was what the game symbolizes rather than any quality, although the latter was highly dubious.
