Gradual complete transformations. This one should be simple to illustrate.

I'll start with this picture. It shows the metamorphosis of Splatoon's Inklings from a baby squid to a humanoid teenager.

Opened...the suggestion is alright but I'd like to see other options before giving a definite [tup].

The problem is that Inklings can transform back and forth, so I'm not sure if that's totally accurate to the trope.

They are born as squid babies before slowly transforming into shapshifting humanoids. That falls under this trope.

The suggestion is a good start.

Pokemon evolving could work if you get the right image.

While a Pokémon could work, I'd prefer a gradual metamorphosis over a Stage 1 to Stage 2 deal. Pokémon could work well on Metamorphosis Monster, but that's for another thread.

Just be sure you know the difference between Metamorphosis and Transformation Sequence.

They are born as squid babies before slowly transforming into shapshifting humanoids. That falls under this trope.

The problem is that they can freely transform back into squids, whereas the very first sentence of the description of Metamorphosis says that the change has to be irreversible.

Not sure how good an example it is, but here's Emil Blonsky becoming The Abomination from The Incredible Hulk. If it doesn't work here, it would be a better fit for Psycho Serum than that page's current pic.

WARNING: Super Serum side effects may include:
Abnormal muscle and bone growth, alopecia, psoriasis, megalomania, dementia, and squaring off with the Hulk.

[up]I think that would be a better fit over at Psycho Serum, yes.

[up][up]Don't want to derail this too much, but the shapeshifting ability they slowly gain does not change the fact that they do go through metamorphosis and they can't go back to being just squids. It's an odd case, no doubt there, but it fits the trope unless metamorphosis of shapeshifters becomes its own thing.

they can't go back to being just squids

They can. That's the whole problem here; rather than irreversibly changing, they essentially just gain shapeshifting abilities.

I would support the OP suggestion if it were an example, but I seriously doubt that it is.

14 looks a bit like Psycho Serum to me - it looks like a change into a monster.

Boring but practical suggestion - using an image of caterpillars turning into butterflies: [1][2]

[up] Can't look at the suggestions right now but if we can't find a good fictional example I'm all for that.

EDIT: I've started a thread for Psycho Serum using the Abomination suggestion.

It does say "development". I think I don't care if they can transform back.

Well, I'd originally meant to go ahead and close this one, but I decided to reclock it. Looking at the example on the page, the OP suggestion is alright but not exactly what I'd call a straight example. I think a Pokemon's evolutions would be a much clearer depiction.

I considered those when creating the thread, but we already have Evolution Power-Up's image.

As I said, the gradual transformation is one of the reasons I proposed that image.
