Suggestion: One Winged Angel

I appreciate that the current image illustrates the trope, but it doesn't really give any sort of clue as to why the trope has that name. Meanwhile, while the actual Trope Namer is (I think?) one of the earlier and/or better-known videogame examples, just a picture of Sephiroth's final form wouldn't explain anything, either.

I figure the trope name itself probably isn't going to change anytime soon, as it's likely been officially grandfather'd into immortality; I kinda like it myself, and know that it's at least popular enough to have warranted homages in multiple works ^note (Bleach and Sinfest, off the top of my head).

If somebody made an image similar to the Maleficent one that showed Sephiroth's first and Trope Naming forms, would it be okay to replace the current image with that? I'd be willing to make it myself, although my pictures aren't the best. :/

The whole purpose of the image is to illustrate the trope, not the name. This is especially important when a trope name is grandfathered and not easy to figure out from the title alone. So, an image of a literal one-winged angel would only cause people to misinterpret the actual definition of the trope, which really has nothing to do with what the name implies. So, I do not support your proposal to change this picture.

What if they were labeled Form 1 and Form 2 in the picture?

Sure. I'm (unfortunately) not familiar with the Final Fantasy series, so I can't really help with suggestions, but I do know how to use Photoshop. If you have an idea, just post links to various images (like this: [[URL]], and if the suggestion seems like it would be better than the current (which is entirely subjective, then I can put something together.

I haven't played FF either, but I figured I'd just Google about the fight, maybe look for a Let's Play of it on Youtube to make sure I have the right Forms (It's a big page, so I want to make sure I get it right), then grab screencaps off an image search and arrange them as appropriate. :/ I replaced the image of Sephiroth in the Image Links page with one from an image search 'cause the first one's link was broken.

I know MS Paint well enough for this sort of thing (I have Photoshop but haven't bothered to learn it yet), but if you drew your avatar, it's a safe bet your picture would come out looking better than mine.

Also, and according to Wikipedia, it's called One-Winged Angel because that's what the soundtrack is called, and the soundtrack is literally translated as, "An Angel With a Wing on One Side," on account of the one wing for which Sephiroth has traded an arm. Apparently, though, that was too long.

EDIT: Now, is there any chance this matter can be nice and resolved? On top of being the Trope Namer and Most Triumphant Example, this pic takes up nearly half as much space as the current one.

Honestly, it's a lateral move for me. Just because Sephiroth's the Trope Namer doesn't necessarily qualify him to make a good illustration, and the multiple wings at the bottom of his second form undermine the "one-winged" aspect for anyone that's not familiar with the FF games.

Sorry, but there is no way a matter like this can be resolved so quickly in almost any IP thread, especially when the current is already ideal. There has to be a significant consensus to make the change.

Comparing your suggestion to the current, the current is a clear winner in my opinion. Maleficent -> giant dragon looks much clearer than Sephiroth -> ... whatever the hell turned into.

Now, I agree that the current it a bit to tall, measuring in at 471 pixels, but that can be solved by some minor editing.

Think I might've gone with "One Black Wing" or something myself, but overtones, I guess. :/ Does say that the wing's black to show he's evil, though, so they didn't seem to care about that.

Question is, is it better than the Maleficent pic? Also, are we even reading entire posts here? It takes no familiarity with FF to read a note or something that explains why they called the soundtrack what it they did, and hell, One-Winged Angel isn't even the name of the form itself (which is Safer Sephiroth, for no readily-apparent reason).

EDIT: Ninja'd. Wouldn't call the pic from Sleeping Beauty ideal by any stretch of the word. It does the job, if no better than Sephiroth, after whom (again) the trope is named.

Behold My True Form was always a better title but come on, that Maleficent transformation sequence is perfect. If you prefer, you could put 7.1 on OneWingedAngel.Square Enix.

That's a dialogue title, which is worse.

Current image is better, though.

Yeah but even so, it's far more illustrative than One-Winged Angel and is better than a perfunctory descriptor like Big Big Bad.

The name is a discussion for TRS, not IP.

Keep current, and add in the Sephiroth pic in the Square Enix subpage if you like

The Square Enix page has a picture of Safer Sephiroth already, so I guess I grabbed and labeled this pic for no reason. :/ The Safer part of it does look a bit better than the page one, I think, but I don't know where to find the original, non-drawn-over version (and don't remember seeing it in the search results).

Since I cobbled together the current image.. how tall is "too tall"?

The OP's suggestion is better for the Square Enix subpage anyway since it at least shows the previous form, but the current is WAY better for reasons already stated. Strong keep.

EDIT: Also I think the height is fine.

Replacing the current pic on the Square Enix page with 7 is fine with me.

Huh, didn't realize the /Square Enix page has an image already... But I don't mind replacing that one with 7, since the pic is too small, is grainy, and borderlines JAFAAC anyway, since we don't see Sephiroth's original form

That's why I wanted to switch it out, didn't think much of the current one.
