Just look at the picture, and tell me if this make you think of "Wutai".

Even if we stay with video games, there're surely plenty better illustrations, like this one.

Current is stupid. Bottom frame of suggestion fits, but I'd like to see more suggestions.

I don't think the current one is terrible. But if others do agree that another picture might be better, yours seems a little overly complicated with two separate pictures connected by an arrow in one image. How about just the bottom picture?

I'm good with the overview of Wutai itself.

The current makes me think of a contemporary theatre first and foremost - [tdown].

Current's definitely better than the suggestion... my issue with the suggestion is there's nothing indicating that it's not just a Japanese village.

By putting Mario in there a Theme Park Version of feudal Japan, it's clearly a Fantasy Counterpart of Japan, rather than just Japan.

Now, I'm sure we can do better than the Mario version, but it's certainly more indicative than the suggestion.

I'm a bit divided. The current isn't bad, but I also like the Wutai one. Though I think the current has the edge.

The Wutai pic doesn't really illustrate the "fantasy" part, though...

Here's another Square Enix example, which is more obviously "fantasy", if only due to the giant circular object floating above the Azuchi Castle. Of course, the game's logo would have to be cropped off.

I like the top picture in the OP's image. The current one looks more like the North Pole in The Polar Express than anything else.

1.1 just looks like a Japanese village, though. That's not this trope.

Actually, the description of the trope specifically mentions villages, so it seems to fit.

Yes, it can be a village... but it has to be a village in a non-Eastern setting. The suggestion just looks like a normal Japanese village, not a Japanese village in an otherwise western game.

The Non-Eastern aspect would be difficult to illustrate without cluttering the image, though.

Current at least illustrates that there's Western people and the fact it's a Theme Park Version is clear.

Your suggestion in 8.1 is at least clear it's a Fantasy Counterpart Culture.

[up]... will that alone work?

Admittedly, I didn't really read the description properly when suggesting that image. I thought it was just that - a Fantasy Counterpart Culture of Jidaigeki or other traditional Eastern locations. Didn't realize it was supposed to be about an Eastern-styled village that exists in an otherwise Medieval European Fantasy setting

Bump. I still think current is best. It manages to clearly be a Theme Park Version of Feudal Japan, and there's enough western elements that it looks like an Asian-themed level, rather than simply looking like it's a level in Japan.
