Speaking as a musical fan:

WHY ARE THEY DOING OLD AND BARELY RELEVANT MUSICALS?

This is why even OTHER THEATER PEOPLE have such an outdated view of musicals in the first place! Fucking bastards!

also because if it was popular then it'll be even more popular now, because you have a built-in audience of fans ready to give you their money

or. you know. you could just say "FWEE MONEY"

You know this is going to give us a shocking amount of 'Spider-Man fighting Daddy Warbucks' jokes, do you.

Sorry to the people who like Annie.

I'm just in a bad mood because Maleficent has barreled right into the "TOTALLY NOT ELPHABA" trap. They could have done SO MANY OTHER THINGS with Maleficent, but no.

Plus, I just don't know why ANNIE of all musicals. Literally ANYTHING ELSE would have been a less weird musical to adapt to film, but instead it's Annie which has no relevance to the other movies, musicals, or movie-musicals out recently. It's just, did they pick it out of a hat?

They're clearly updating it in order to parallel the current economic situation (or at least they think they can), so I guess that's why.

Thank god they adapted a musical Disney film; Sleeping Beauty; so in order to change the animated kid-orinated musical genre to a live-action older-targeted action film, i.e., Maleficent. This should've been also done with Annie, because not only they ignored the non-musical aspects of the original newspaper strips, but they kept the same thing with EVERY OTHER FUCKING ADAPTION. They could've changed the reboot's muscial genre into an adventure family film. NOT A FUCKING MUSICAL. They won't have a normal non-muscial film adaption from a musical until I die. I feel like i'm Roger Egbert here.

Keep in mind though, making an original musical is hard. My mom pointed this out after I complained to her about Rocky: The Musical. (She likes Broadway.) The best investment is to base it on an existent property, preferably a film, or just revive an old one like Newsies.

[down] That too.

Not to mention how most big-name musicals are already adaptations of something else, even going as far back to when it was even becoming an industry.

Of course, you could always go down the jukebox musical route, or make a musical based on the works of a band.

They do have medals for almost, and they're called silver!

I thought jukebox musicals were the same thing as "musicals based on [X band]'s music." Or is one a subset of the other?

Why remake Annie? The one I encountered when I wasn't into my teens was good enough.

Why remake anything? Because $$$, that's why.

Also because Quvenzhane Wallis is an exceptionally talented child actress and it'd be a pity not to use those talents.

idk, does there have to be any other reason to remake a movie you don't seem to want to see?

Because all that invested money, those actors and time spent into making it might be better used into original, more innovative projects?

It's kind of weird how hostile people are towards this movie.

I mean, wow, nobody was complaining when Phantom of the Opera or Les Miserables were adapted/remade.

[up][up]Both of them were the first adaptations of the musical telling of the story, so they got more respect. By contrast, Annie has already had two musical films.
