I always have waaaaaay too much fun coming up with xeno-anthropological concepts. tongue

I had an idea for a race of winged vertebrates, along the lines of pterosaurs or those dragon things from Avatar (probably closer to the former); and their challenges in dealing with ground-based cultures and philosophies.

I have a post in progress, but don't expect it up for a while.

My civilization is a humanoid race who happen to feature prominent rodent physical traits that rely a lot on espionage and trade to survive the cold hard space of... Well, space. They used to be militant but quickly got that idea kicked out of them.

I've got an idea for a split-off Human faction I could reuse, but it'd require something.

Could we say that Humans already encountered and started interacting with aliens prior to the RP start? (Like, at least a hundred-two hundred years prior.)

I'm interested. This seems like a fine idea.

It's kind of funny. Sufficiently advanced stupidity is like sufficiently advanced science; eventually, you find something you can't solve.

Interested. I'm thinking a race of humanoids with partial exoskeletons and tentacles sprouting from their backs. Possibly a race that was once a sort of proud warrior race but are now, after a few generations of peace, deeply ashamed of that past. Should write up later.

Since we're tossing out ideas here, I'm working on writing up a plausibly post-Singularity human civilization - I was going to use aliens, but a) not many people seem to want to play humans and b) I realized the concept works pretty well either way.

So if Firock wants to discuss how exactly his faction split off, I have absolutely nothing for history here and could probably accommodate most anything. *hint hint*

[up]I'm using humans too! Lets us huddle together!

the Akash: to Parable: When you say "hard" science fiction, do you mean "nothing actually ruled out as impossible by current science (save FTL travel, kind of necessary for interstellar civilizations)" or "nothing that we aren't pretty sure would for-real work?" Because, short of a whole bunch of really interesting ideas, I'm probably going to have to use aliens to create a plausibly different culture, and as a fan of Bizarre Alien Biology, I'd like to know how far I can go (Crystal people? Evolutionarily ridiculous neurology? Pure energy?)

The latter. I don't pretend to be an astrophysicist or know anything beyond what a semester of Astronomy and browsing NASA news updates inform me of, so I won't be holding a high standard. But as I mentioned earlier, I want everyone to put effort into making their ideas plausible and consistent. I don't see anything wrong with crystal people, I don't actually know what the second one is, and my concern with energy beings is their ability to communicate in an effective manner. While language barriers might be fun, it'll get really lonely if you can't chat with anyone.

Strat: By the way, what will be the tone of the RP? Light, heavy, silly, serious?

And this is my idea for a civilization: one divided into four wildly different factions, each one of them focused on being the best at one thing- one faction glorifies physical prowess, the other glorifies creativity, the other logic and math- and the way each of their governments, military and cultures work is based on the what they glorify. Probably four or five factions/nations in the same planet...

E) Schizophrenic. By it's nature the RP will feature a large cast in various situations across the galaxy, what is going on, and thus the tone of the RP, will depend on that situation.

My concern with your idea is that, based on what I'm reading, you aren't creating four factions of a single civilization but creating four civilizations that happen to share a species. Actually, it just says planet, they could all be different species for all I know. So you'll be putting four times as much work on yourself to create these civilizations and maintain all of their relations with every other player faction in the game. Are you up to that?

Firock: Could we say that Humans already encountered and started interacting with aliens prior to the RP start? (Like, at least a hundred-two hundred years prior.)

Yes. In fact, unless someone states otherwise, assume each species has been in contact with each other for a long time.

Well, I guess I'll do a Humanoid Alien to contrast with the Starfish Aliens and Humans.

After all, you can only have so many human civilizations before you start to get confused.

Hey, I think I'll be chipping in to the human group... sort of; I was storming up a Kill-Zone like scenario where a large colony of humans mutate separately, might even mix with a parasite to become a different creature, still humanoid though.

Yes, I am. The plan is that these species started out friendly from each other, but started to drift apart as their technologies progressed. The ideas currently are:

  • A race of humanoid lizards who still live in tribes/villages, all of them united under a common banner, like a bigger version of feudalism. Their society revolves around physical perfection. I'll specify them later.

  • A race of humans obsessed with being the best at everything. All throughout the years, they've been upgrading their technology so they could upgrade themselves by adding new parts, keeping the good ones and removing the "bad" ones. Again, I'll get into more detail later.

  • A race revolving around intelligence. Still working out what makes them unique.

  • And a race revolving around creativity, considered the weakest as it's made out of mostly artists, painters, actors, musicians, that kind of thing.

I want each race to be different from each other, both in looks and the way their society and culture works, but I don't want to make one race better than the other, so they all have their flaws and their qualities. Like a game of Alpha Centauri.

Every civilization is contained to one planet, right? Oh, this is going to be great. Gonna start working on it after I study... and watch all the stuff I gotta watch.

Actually no, you can have plenty of star systems under your control.

However, after mulling it over for a bit, I have decided that four factions for one person from the start risks destabilizing things early on. I will allow for two at most until the game is more underway.

The Rakasha kinda just sit in their own solar system and interact with people from there. I mean, after [insert Flanker's civ here] smashed them, they kinda decided that galactic conquest through force wasn't their style.

And yes, I'm calling them the Rakasha. Although they are often called by others "Ratmen", "Ratkin", or "Cowards".

I've been toying around with two-three ideas, though since I'm already juggling a lot of other roleplays I think I'll only go with one of them. To put things really simplistically, here are my ideas:

  • A human faction that's essentially Soviet Russia IN SPACE!* with possibly a mish-mash of other cultures. They're fairly open, but as far as they're concerned their needs take priority.

  • Another human faction, this time based around a hodgepodge of Western cultures (predominantly American and British, however). Kind of distrustful at first, but make steadfast friends even in a pinch. Freedom is one of their most cherished ideals, which manifests in a lot of adventurers.

  • An alien faction, this time. A race of canine humanoids. They were once vassals of an old empire*. They're less militarised then they were in the past, but the military still plays a significant role in their lives and culture.

Looking at what everyone else is coming up with, these ideas don't look very good in the least. My apologies (especially if none of these would work with what people have got planned)! OTL
