Discuss TV Tropes itself, such as observations you've made about the site/forum/wiki.
NOTE: Keep it civil; try not to get into any Flame Bait-y territory, per the forum rules (in particular, drama importation and popcorn posting are not allowed, and this thread is for discussion about the site and not the users). In addition, while discussing the Edit Banned thread is not prohibited on its own, discussing and/or alluding to specific cases is not permitted.
One thing I've noticed is that for all how the page for They Might Be Giants claims them to be the unofficial official band of this wiki, there's relatively few people on this site who seem to ever reference them.

I'm thankful for the friends I made here. :) <3 This place does a superbly better job of hanging out and socializing than Commercials I Hate.
I like to keep my audience riveted. What frustrates me about the TV Tropes forum is that some threads will get tens of thousands of replies... and yet whatever threads I'm actually interested in will die out quickly, or at least will rarely get any replies.
Yeah. I have a Spaceballs thread and a Screenshot thread, but they don't have 20 posts between them.
Famous last words of many a kerbal: MOAR BOOSTERS!!!I noticed something strange: some people who regularly post on the forum rarely (or never) edit the wiki.

Or vice versa. There are editors with no forum posts.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanBeen on both sides. Very true (though I still do some editing now and then - it's YKTTW that I stopped doing/going).
When we got rid of Troper Tales it was placed on a wikkii domain; now wikkii is gone, and another archive kept supposedly for hating is down too. Seems neither fans nor haters cared enough about it.
I have quite pleasant memories of those funny little anecdotes, but then I was careful in which ones to read. Though I do remember the martyr complex that on Complaining About People Not Liking the Show.
I know the root problem: the wiki attracts internet goers of a peculiar culture. The entries are written by those who identify and classify all they see. Reviews and the Analysis tabs attract those interested in the intellectual side. The example sections attract those wanting to promote their favourite shows. The forums are for those who want to talk to others of like mind.
Troper Tales attracted those who wanted to talk about themselves. The usual context for doing so is personal conversation, but I think many of them were short on that for any reason. An Emo Olympics, as it got called. And given the format, anyone could add while there were no guidelines for removing anything.
The hate it got was spectacular. Someone compared keeping the subwiki to legalising murder.
Stories don't tell us monsters exist; we knew that already. They show us that monsters can be trademarked and milked for years.I mean, if you wanna read it still, there is the Internet Archive.
Here's the archive as of sometime in 2011: http://web.archive.org/web/20110225161152/https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/namespace_index.php?ns=TroperTales
Insert witty 'n clever quip here.I'm gonna have fun reading some of those, that's for sure.
Haha, ptitles.

MY SOUL IS DARK BUT MY HAIR IS COLORFUL — Brahian Pokémon AlchemistA bit of a weird thing I've noticed is how many seem to want to avoid certain issues but not others, and yet at either end of go for all issues or avoid them all there's relatively few.
I realise part of that is interest, but I wonder how much of it is activism or not wanting to get involved, and how much of it is taking All Issues Are Political Issues to a logical conclusion either way.
"Did you expect somebody else?"I avoid certain issues because my self-esteem is low enough already.
I know that Troper Tales is no longer on this wiki, but I wanted to make a comment on this.
While I don't think that I am any better than the tropers on this video because I find myself constantly whining and complaining. I think these tropers are overreacting to something that is no big deal.
This is coming from someone who was bullied for 8 school years. I used to eat lunch alone in high school, and nobody bullied me for it. There were times I did eat with others and there were times I did eat alone.
I mean, I've seen people who are far more popular than me eat lunch alone all the time, and they don't have a problem with it.
That's the problem.

um..probably not a good idea to link that.
New theme music also a boxThere's no point in stirring up an old, and very sore, point. Especially since it's not really particularly on topic.
...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.Okay, let's change the topic then.
There's a trope for pretty much anything. And if there isn't, there will be soon. That should be a rule of the internet.
Famous last words of many a kerbal: MOAR BOOSTERS!!!I mentioned earlier about odd people on these forums. I should add that the people I see most often making trouble are fairly intelligent, well-read geeks with niche interests who seem to think that the best way to promote their obscure shows is to lambast popular shows that they don't like. Neon Genesis Evangelion is the most common target for this.
My advice to them is that just because they don't see any appeal doesn't mean there isn't anything good to it, and you can't make others not like a show. And don't try to come up with dismissive explanations as to its popularity (sex appeal, art style, or making the audience feel smarter than they are). And understand that there your appeal for certain shows will not work for everyone.
Also, you're not making your own fandom look good.
Stories don't tell us monsters exist; we knew that already. They show us that monsters can be trademarked and milked for years. That's hardly exclusive to TV Tropes.
That's pretty much bog-standard fare for humans with niche interests.

...so, most of the nerd and geek communities?
That really does apply to plenty of things - I've tried telling a person there's a reason why I use Windows, and they wouldn't believe me when I said I needed a specific mouse to work with, and that my software which is a very particular financial package has no good Linux or BSD equivalent.
Nevermind the stuff Bloomberg makes for trading.
"Did you expect somebody else?"True about it being widespread, but the thing about this site is that firstly, they are the most common problem people (rather than extremists of some stripe or half-concealed misogynists and racists), secondly, their persistence is something to behold when you realise they are not in any way dumb. This devotion to their fandom just brings out a vein of persistence and myopia that I'm used to seeing in religion or politics, but applied to an area with much lower stakes.

Exactly.
