[up] Guess I'm the only one who likes seeing characters like Rainbow Dash suffer then - especially when they do deserve it for arrogance, IMHO.

Even if I had different face, I AM STILL DISGRACED.

[up]I like every other episode when the Mane 6 suffers except Mare Do Well. I noticed that I like every other episode or at least tolerate the other episodes but Mare Do Well, IMO. Lol. Rarity and the others get what they deserve in some episodes and I like Rarity. Everybody was likable except The Mane 6 in that episode.

Then again, "Putting Your Hoof Down" is just as guilty because of how out of character Fluttershy was, but I don't see the episode getting bashed. Wonder why?

I think the Mare Do Well episode is worse than "If It Smells Like An Ed", "Town And Out (The Powerpuff Girls)," and "Arthur's Big Hit" combined in my opinion. (speaking in general) [lol]

maybe because her acting out of character was the focus of the episode?

I actually enjoyed seeing Twilight suffer in "It's about time", due to her Smart ass personality always being a turn down to me. I guess that's always been why Pinkie's been my fave.

[up][up] And to add to that., Fluttershy wasn't acting overly annoying like Rainbow Dash was. Putting Your Hoof Down is better than Mare Do Well, because it shows Fluttershy being out of character without her being annoying. Plus, at least Pinkie and Rarity were acting like good friends, unlike how they acted in Mare Do Well.

So in my opinion: "Putting Your Hoof Down > Mare Do Well"

Mare Do Well fails at that because it made not only Rainbow Dash act out of character, but the other 5 as well. It deserves all the hate in my opinion. tongue It's one of the worst episodes of all time.

[up]Both episodes are in fact made by the same writer. Then again said writer also did Wonderbolts Academy.

While Mare Do Well isn't my favorite episode for similar reasons, I tend not to find FIM's broken moments as irritating as others, namely because the show is fairly non discriminate about it's Aesops and makes sure every character gets taken off their pedestal an equal amount of times (if Dash was always the one getting Aesops like this and the others were always enabled or made to look "Rightly Self Righteous" like many other shows do, then I would likely get annoyed). Add to that Dash's humbling moments at least stuck and played part into her Character Development.

I feel Mare Do Well came off more mean spirited than standard episodes because:

  • It was formulated completely by other characters. Break the Haughty moments are frequent in the show, but, villains aside, they are usually a result of Laser-Guided Karma or the character walking into their own undoing. Most times a character self righteously tries to put another in their place, it backfires and they are made to look just as bad (eg. "Feeling Pinkie Keen", "Fall Weather Friends", "Boast Busters"). RD did exacerbate her problem, but it was also concocted by her friends, as well as assisted by the town openly changing their opinion of her as a respected hero to an outdated loser.
  • The other five went instantly to the elaborate plan to humble Dash rather than making the standard token failed attempt to just reason with her.

[up] For some reason, I agree with you. I don't mind Rainbow Dash or the other five's flaws being deconstructed at all. In other episodes that deconstruct the other 5's flaws, the others stay in character, but not in M Are Do Well, which is why fans target the episode.

On Deviantart, somebody said that Fluttershy was heading to the same direction that Rainbow Dash was heading to (like how she did in season 2 with Pinkie Pie) when it came to their traits, which I can't bring myself to agree or disagree with.

I love how this thread always derails into the moral implications of My Little Pony episodes.

On the contrary: Aang was 112 years old, so technically, he shouldn't be dating preteen girls at all.
Hey, if Edward Cullen could date a teenager, so can Aang!

The Simpsons episode "Oh Brother Where Bart Tho" - A guy or a girl who is the only girl/boy out of their siblings are unspecial.

From Pelswick: The difference between able-bodied people and paraplegic people is only that the latter set cannot use their legs. Everything else is exactly the same. More specifically:

Never try too hard to be politically correct. You'll only end up annoying the people you're trying to avoid offending, or worse, offending them anyway for giving them special treatment they don't need.

It's okay to make fun of yourself.

And here it goes again, more Goof Troop: Friendship may be fun and games, but family is Serious Business.

Sidekicks are much more sympathetic than the people they work for. No exceptions. Downright evil? Sidekick does a Heel–Face Turn. A total Jerkass? Sidekick is a close to saintly Pollyanna. Just kind of a self-centered kid? Sidekick is The Woobie and a total sweetheart.

From An Extremely Goofy Movie: Yes, you can get a date. Even if you're fat, shy, and competing. And on that note, Yes, Some Guys Very Much Want to Be Chased.

Hey Arnold episode "Girl Trouble" - Its perfectly fine for your bully to torment you with no punishment. Fighting back, however, gets you in trouble.

Well to their credit, at least it's Truth in Television.

From Elfen Lied : If one girl's misguided way of showing her affection/desire and displeasure with you is to swat you and harumph, and another's is to murder your family, fans will want you to choose the killer.

Fraidy Cat : Whoever you are, however bad things might seem or might be, odds are you are doing better than a cat on his last life, haunted by his own moronic past incarnations, some of whom are actively trying to kill him, including somehow the ghost of his present life that is very nearly an Eldritch Abomination in the form of a cloud—and did I mention they're all summoned up by saying any number from one through ten?
