So I just got back from the Volume 3 Tugg event:

It was good. Also, they gave us a bonus of Hilarious Outtakes for Volume 3, which mostly consisted of render errors. BUT remember this entry on the Funny page?

  • According to the Livestream done for Season 3 in anticipation for the finale, there's a file somewhere of a dead Penny's right hand flipping off the camera.

Well, in that blooper reel: we saw it. It does indeed exist

Obviously, she learned it from Yang in the great offscreen land, where the huntsman probably curse a lot more.

I liked the Atlas segment, that's for sure.

It strongly implies that Mantle still exists - and that whatever people still manage to survive there would be pretty pissed off at the Atlas government, if so.

It takes us into the sci-fi vibe. That 'with great science comes great responsibility' vibe that sci-fi thrives on - the fear vibe that great, mysterious scientific developments cause and what they could do for humanity in the right hands and against humanity in the wrong hands. That's Qrow's assessment of Atlas in a nutshell - it's not the research development that's the problem, it's who's behind it and what they ultimately intend with it. And the entire implication of the segment is that Atlas's current existence and technological advancements are extremely dependent on the history of dust mining - more so than even other kingdoms, meaning the Schnee family is utterly woven into the current form and very existence of Atlas. We had hints of that, but this segment does give us an idea of how that could be the case.

So...Mistral is the swashbuckler and crime thriller kingdom, Atlas is the sci-fi (really, sci-fantasy) kingdom, and Vale is.... well, strangely vague by comparison (and I don't think it's simply because the story's been set in Vale so far).

Vale is the kingdom that had the 'easy life'. The idyllic, trouble-free existence that the other kingdoms don't quite have... and the one with the mystery bloke in charge of protecting it all. I think there's a red flag raised over Vale's history. Although the roots run deeper than we know, the warts in Mistral and Atlas are basically visible, but Qrow did not create a visible wart for Vale (even with the reference to Mountain Glenn), which means Vale's 'visible wart with the mysteriously deep roots' is Ozpin.

I am looking forward to Vacuo because I'm still suspicious about why Vacuo's been the least 'involved' kingdom in the story so far.

Just remembered that Team SSSN, besides Sun himself, are from Mistral.

That explains Neptune so much.

Ever since Sun first said he was originally from Vacuo, I've always wondered why he's in Haven Academy.

It could be that prospective hunters apply to all four academies and see which one takes them. That would certainly make the most success and reflect what pupils do when hoping to go to university in many countries - you don't apply for just one university, you apply for several, and then see what your options are when the universities give you their responses.

There is the implication that Beacon was the best of all four academies, and certainly people who don't want to be drafted into the military might be put off from wanting to go to Atlas anyway (although it might be a doubly appealing draw to some students). Then again, Team FNKI (after watching the Atlas segment, I think Atlas could use a few more teams like FNKI)

We don't know if Sun went from Vacuo to Haven Academy or whether his family moved to Mistral at some point. We don't even know if he has any living family. So, assuming he only left Vacuo to go to Haven Academy, that would mean he skipped going to two much closer academies (Shade and Beacon), to go to the one academy that's as far away as possible from Vacuo... unless the flat map is deceptive of course (which it will be) - perhaps Haven is closer to Vacuo if travel in the other direction is considered.

And, hey, perhaps Sun wanted to get as far away from Vacuo as he could for some reason. It's not like we know for certain why Pyrrha went to Beacon instead of Haven. At least we know why Weiss wanted Beacon instead of Atlas.

The whole business about Atlas Council talking to Vale Council about Ozpin and Ironwood made it seem like there was one Council for each kingdom. Qrow's Mistral segment made it sound like there may be also one all-powerful over-arching Council that was based in Mistral. It would be interesting if each kingdom's Council answered to a higher global Council of Remnant.

Still... Kingdoms, people. When are we going to see some crowns? And I don't just mean the tiara on Glynda's cloak. The Wizard of Oz had kings and queens and princesses and fairy tales almost always have them... does Remnant have any? Or is there supposed to be one, but they're missing... just like in The Wizard of Oz?

I think it may be that Remnant doesn't have monarchs anymore, but still refers to the countries as Kingdoms for simplicity's sake.

Also: I get the feeling that Vacuo isn't as involved because from what we saw, it looks like it's near/in a fuckhuge desert. So maybe Vacuo's not involved because they're more like Australia and have more shit to deal with than the petty squabbling of Vale and Atlas? [lol]

"Kingdom" might just be a remnant of their olden days when kings and queens did do all the ruling. Maybe the type of government changed but nobody cared enough to change the names of the countries.

Also: I get the feeling that Vacuo isn't as involved because from what we saw, it looks like it's near/in a fuckhuge desert.

I've read/watched too many stories where the person/location left out of the initial part of the story turns out to be one of the most important pieces of the puzzle. The fact that Vacuo has been so little referenced til now, makes me very suspicious. It's why I've been looking forward to the Vacuo WoR most of all. I'm not a sponsor, however, so I'll be watching it tomorrow when it becomes available to non-paying fans.

On the kingdom reference, it might well be the case that there are none, but given the fairy tale roots and the fact that stories like The Wizard of Oz do have 'true heirs' that are lost for one reason or another (indeed, the Wizard was responsible for the heir of Oz being missing), it's too good a connection for me to dismiss the idea entirely. Especially when we see that different kingdoms are colour-coded, just like the Oz kingdoms were (different colours, admittedly).

Voids if you're going to spoiler tag your posts, please don't use white text on top of it. It's literally impossible to read (unless Night Vision is on I guess?) and you've already spoiler tagged it. On a phone I have to c/p your posts to read them since highlighting to reveal the text doesn't work.

Am sponsor: Vacuo's not been involved because Vacuo is basically the third-world Kingdom. It was technologically unadvanced and sitting on a shitton of resources when Vale, Mistral and Atlas found them. Now the people laugh at the idea of a government, but there's a much better sense of community because everyone, human and faunus, are all suffering together.

They do have medals for almost, and they're called silver!

[up][up]Not really. You can't just know whenever someone is going to post a spoiler. Some people have spoilers set to default because it's more convenient not because they actually want to find out everything now.

It'd be funny if the video for that was just Qrow going "Huh, wha?... Come on, no one's actually crazy enough to go to that place...I mean, just look at it.", and then glugging.

Well, a least this video manage to answer the question: Towns outside the big cities proper which means humanity survive.....kinda.

Also is funny how Phyrra who is based in a greek myth come from Mistal who look east Asian and Sun who is based in Chinese myth come from Vacuo who look like Australia.

In fact, what other figure they will adapt? I almost expect Phyrra having a sister based on Heracles and someone based in Beowolf facing a grendel-grimm

I'm not familiar with the tale, why is he naked? ...Aside from the obvious?

BlackSunNocturne Since: Aug, 2013
#40475: Oct 21st 2016 at 10:06:30 AM

[up]Fighting naked was a lot more common before the advent of better medicine. A wound could get infected very easily if you wore clothing and the fabric got in the wound.

Plus, Beowulf is the Ur-Example of Rated M for Manly in English literature (the Ur-Example for literature overall is Gilgamesh and Enkidu). He fought Grendel naked because he didn't fear him, and it gave less things for Grendel to grab onto. Because Beowulf didn't fight Grendle with a sword. He grappled the motherfucker and tore his arm off.

That being said, Beowulf fighting Grendle while bare-assed was a creation of the animated movie.

  • In the 2007 Beowulf film, after listening to the Queen perform a song, Beowulf begins casually stripping naked in front of her. When questioned about it, he tells her that because Grendel is naked he will fight him naked. Her reaction is priceless. He then goes on to battle Grendel naked as the day he was born.
