Long ago, the gods created many worlds, and the creatures to inhabit them. Some of these creatures were cast in the images of the gods, and others were simply created to provide challenge for those original creatures. For millennia the gods ruled over their world, and all was good.

However, in time the gods grew tired of some of their worlds, and thus abandoned them to create new ones. Without the influence of the gods, these worlds grew stagnant. The hearts of the people, once inspired by adventurous ideals and greater glory, grew shallow and weak. The monsters who opposed them retreated into the darker parts of the wilderness, lurking silently. Some even began to think of them, and the heroes who battled them, as legends.

But old legends never truly die, and now a new group of heroes has arisen to take up the banner of old. Will they succeed in ushering in a new age of heroism? Or will they fail as many young ones failed in the tales of lore?

Or will no one at all give a damn?

Hi all! While some of you have seen me participating in a few RPs here, I thought I'd try my hand at running one!

This RP is going to very very very loosely be based on 2nd Edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons rules (keep in mind I'm houseruling/homebrewing some stuff just to balance out the kinks and/or to spice things up). It's also going to be really open-ended, with me just throwing random adventures at you. Expect No Fourth Wall, OOC, Medium Awareness, and general weirdness. All in the name of good fun, and I would like to see the same.

I'm going to start off by limiting signups to 4-6 people initially, with the possibility of more later. The whole idea being that the later people are hero worshipers who are inspired by the deeds of the original players. This is still up in the air, though, so I might allow more if you can Persuade me. tongue

If you want to roll three dice six times in order, fine. If you want to just assign attributes for maximum comic effect, fine. If one or two of you just want to max out everything, fine (but not everyone). Rule of Funny applies.

So, without further ado, here's a character sheet of sorts. If there's an aspect of 2nd Edition you don't recall (or you don't know the system), go ahead and ask: I have all the old rulebooks.

Name: (Nothing hyper-offensive: no incorporating cuss words or other dirty language into it.)
Age: (Will not have any effect on stats unless I say otherwise)
Gender: (Again, no effect on stats)
Alignment: (No debates about what equals what, please.)
Race: (No class level limits on race here. I may bend rules on race/class combos depending on the character in question.)
Class(es): (Fighter, Cleric, Druid, Thief, Mage, Bard, Monk, Assassin, Paladin, Ranger, or Illusionist are the choices. I can pull out Unearthed Arcana if you guys want, which has a couple of other options.)
Level: (Preferably 3-5 at the start, with multi-classing handled appropriately. No experience points; you level up when I say you level up. tongue)
Stats: (Strength, Intelligence, Constitution, Dexterity, Wisdom, Charisma.)
Spell List:(Spellcasting classes only. Other classes can omit this.)
Equipment: (Nothing too fancy, and no more than one magic item per character. Nothing above a +2.)
Background/Personality: (Go nuts.)

That's it, really. If you've got any questions, ask. I'll post a list of who's registered below once we get some interest going, with links to the post with their character sheet.

If you don't know much about D&D, I suggest you play a non-spellcasting class, as they don't require very much knowledge.

Very very very very loosely is the keywords. In most cases, Rule of Funny will trump game rules every time. For example, THAC0 (the "to hit" system in AD&D) is out, simply because it's not fun in the least. Don't expect to have to roll dice very often, just when it will be the most funny.

Right then; here we go...

Name: Ashi Kyo

Age: Looks 13, but is actually nearly 100.

Gender: Male

Alignment: Chaotic Good

Race: Human

Class: Fighter

Level: 5

Stats: Strength: 14. Dexterity: 10. Constitution: 14. Intelligence: 14. Wisdom: 12. Charisma: 10.

Appearance: Black male's kimono, white socks, wooden sandals, and a round-ish kasa. (A 'kasa' is a ye-olde Japanese hat; you can look it up on Wikipedia.)

Equipment: A sharp Katana, a water jug, and a small bag around his waist for coins. Also has a pair of dice in his pockets for gambling. However, he is currently broke.

Background: Born in the far off nation of Napaj, Ashi Kyo was born nearly a 100 years ago. His mother was a whore and a drunk, and his father liked to punch the rest of the town's population's lights out on Sundays, which one day led to his father not coming home from work. His mother said that his father had, '...ggggooone off wit daaaaatt slut! Dat'sssss wut shhhhe dish!' Of course, it was entirely possible that his mother was just stinking bloody drunk — again — but all Ashi truly knew is that neither of his parents could be there for him. So, at the age of 12, Ashi struck out on his own, first annoying the **** out of an old master to teach him the ways of the sword until he finally did so, and then, once he had become a complete and total master of the blade, he wandered the land, fighting monsters and humans alike, and wooing many a pretty Yamato Nadeshiko.

However, one day, he finally met a girl he actually liked beyond the sex appeal, and so, they eventually had sex, settled down, had more sex, settled down again, and raised a family. Whom eventually had their own families. By this point, Ashi was now 95 years old, and it seemed that his time was near an end, though he hadn't regretted a moment of his long life. The only problem was, it was about to get longer, albeit in a very inconvenient way. You see, years ago, Ashi had faced off against a rather powerful demon. However, he had managed to defeat it, and surely it would not trouble him again in the future, right?

...Actually, it turns that the demon wasn't actually dead. It was only mostly dead. It Ashi had known it was mostly dead, and not all dead, well, he probably wouldn't have checked the demon's pockets for loose change. But that was now inconsequential, as the demon, after having had decades to recover, had now returned. Now, you think it would just wait a few days for Ashi to kick the bucket, but this particular demon didn't seem to have inherited it's father's brains. So, instead of just waiting it out like any smart demonic hellbeing would, it instead placed a curse on Ashi in his sleep. He would now regain his lost youth, but at a cost, and when Ashi had woken up, he immediately saw just what that cost was.

Ashi had been turned back into a ten year old child, but he still retained all of his old experience as an old man, including his skill with the sword. Running like hell before his wife, children, and grandchildren could wake up, he tried to engage in a healthy bout of binge drinking — with the key word being 'try', as the local pub wasn't about to give sake to those under-age — but he ultimately decided instead to chase down the demon that had done this to him, and then, and only then, would he restore his lost honor. And he hadn't lost it just by being turned into a child; to Ashi, he had let some demonic hellspawn, that he had already defeated no less, break into his house and turn him into a 10-year old. He was not about to let this stain on his honor go unanswered, but the only way to reclaim it was to get the demon to change him back, and then kill it. And so, he spent the next 3 years chasing it down all across the known lands. Eventually however, it was nowhere to be found on any known lands, and so, he went across the sea, vowing to find it wherever it had gone... (And wherever it had gone would conventionally be whatever continent the RP takes place on.)

Personality: Ashi is a mix between a whiny Bratty Halfpint, an aging old geezer, and a Badass Grandpa. Just how he acts depends on both his mood, as well as the occasion, but on average, he's generally rather grumpy and snarky, unless he finds something that truly interests him, in which case, he'll turn into a hyperactive little Tykebomb, and in some cases even go Ax-Crazy. He's also an amazing expert with the blade, though when he's in one of his more... active moods, he can be a threat not just to his enemies, but to his friends and allies as well.

Okay, I don't think I can let the immortality thing slide, as becoming immortal is a little too difficult in standard game rules. If you can drop that (just make it so he's cursed to be young again), your character should be good to go.

(Personally, I think it would a little easier to justify his adventuring if he were more of a teenager, but that's just me. You don't have to change that part.)

Works for me.

One other thing to keep in mind is that there have been no real adventurers in this setting for centuries (or longer), so don't think you can have him talk about any other ones from his backstory. Whatever adventures he had when he was young, he had on his own. You cool with that?

I don't know a lot about D&D either so here's hoping my character will work out...

  • Name: Asmodom Whitebeard
  • Age: 70 years old, which is younger in dwarf years. The human equivalent is probably around 30 or 40.
  • Gender: Male
  • Alignment: Chaotic Good
  • Race: Dwarf
  • Class(es): Fighter
  • Level: 3
  • Stats: Okay so I just rolled 6 d6 and here's what the Random Numbers God assigned me.
    • Strength - 12
    • Intelligence - 9
    • Constitution - 6
    • Dexterity - 13
    • Wisdom - 16
    • Charisma - 10
  • Equipment: You're going to have to help me on this one. I'm going to say a hammer and a shield are his starting weapons but I have no idea what any specifics I have to go into. He wears dusty, well worn clothes with a chain mail shirt underneath his cloth one.
  • Background/Personality/Appearance: Bullied and shunned by the other dwarfs because of his cowardly father that brought disgrace on his name, Asmodom the Dwarf left his clan to become a freelance mercenary. After 20 or so years of such work he has acheived quite a profit and is widely regarded as the best local mercenary around. As he is a dwarf and a mercenary, his personality is gruff and he is not eager to talk to anyone. He looks down on cowards, due to his father, and will not suffer fools. He has a white beard with an brown eyepatch he received while fighting a dogsnake.

I know I'm going to have to revise this so please try to help me out on this one. This RP sounds fun though.

I specified levels 3-5 in the OP.

Regarding D&D fighters, they work much better if they have higher Strength and/or Constitution. I'd say try to have at least 12 in one or both, preferably more. (This extends to other classes as well, try to have 12 or more in the main stat of the class.) Hammer and shield are fine for weapons, along with chain mail.

If you do that, I can accept you. However, I probably won't be able to accept any more fighters after that, so everyone else consider other classes please. (We do need at least one spellcaster.) Same goes for Chaotic Good characters, as that would be rather boring.

Alright, here I go.

  • Name: Klarg Skullcleaver
  • Age: 27
  • Gender: Male
  • Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
  • Race: Half-Orc
  • Class(es): Druid
  • Level: 3
  • Stats:
    • Strength: 15
    • Intelligence: 13
    • Constitution: 17
    • Dexterity: 14
    • Wisdom: 14
    • Charisma: 10
  • Spell List: Druid Spells
    • '''Prepared:
      • Level 1: Shillelagh(x2), Animal Friendship, Pass Without Trace, Faerie Fire
      • Level 2: Obscurement, Cure Light Wounds
      • Level 3: Water Breathing
  • Equipment: Wood Club. Heavy Wooden Shield. Hide Armor. Backpack with four days of iron rations, a blanket, and a water skin.
  • Background/Personality: Born into a small clan of human and half-orc barbarians, Klarg found he had the knack for magic at a young age. It wasn't a very good knack, especially compared to what real mages could do, and more often than not, he was better off bashing something with a club anyway, especially since that's what everyone else was doing, and it was much easier to learn how to do that. But he was still certainly the best magic user in the clan. Though, he was also the only one, so there wasn't really any way for him to improve. So he went about his life going through the wild lands and outskirts, hunting animals and fighting monsters.
Then one day, the clan stumbled upon a Horned Devil* that proceeded to slaughter everyone. But, by some stroke of luck, he managed to successfully make himself look like a tree, and then summon Treants to kill it.... well, at least he thought. The Treants were actually already there to begin with. But noticing that he had a hint of natural magic, they decided to save his life, make him less barbaric, and train him over the next few years as another protector of nature, who could go out and seek the evils of the world at the source.

@nman: Tree Shape and Cure Moderate Wounds are not spells in 2nd edition. Obscuring Mists (or Obscurement, as it was called in this edition) is 2nd level. Calm Animal is called Animal Friendship in 2nd edition. (I suggest replacing Tree Shape with the Shillegah spell, which will allow you to temporarily enchant your club.)

With a Wisdom of 14, you get two extra 1st level spell slots. Keep in mind you can prepare multiples of the same spell, and may want to: each spell prepared is one cast.

@tricksterson: Sure, although it might be tricky. (Pun intended.) tongue

Faerie Fire is good and is 1st level. (FYI, Cure Light Wounds is 2nd level for druids in 2nd edition.)

However, you missed the Cure Moderate Wounds bit. You'll need a different 3rd level spell.
