Woah, I never said anything about Steam. That base is too vast to be counted on for anything. I'm not too in touch with the L 4 D fanbase either.
Still, Half Life and Garry's Mod fans are generally cool and make a lot of generally cool stuff.

this place needs me hereTrue, Steam's not quite the same as Valve.
I've also seen fanbases get nasty when they get smaller, since the casual fans who aren't likely to get angry or creepy disappear first, leaving only the grunge on the edges.

Fight. Struggle. Endure. Suffer. LIVE.That's a different situation I wasn't considering. It is, of course, absolutely relevant. Probably because anything that goes from really popular to significantly less so has a fanbase where almost no one is happy.
The Jet Set Radio fanbase is pretty great. The biggest uproar I've seen is people upset Yappie Feet wasn't in JSRHD, but that wasn't really an uproar. Also, Beat has six fingers.◊
Remember! Hyperbole is an exaggeration made for comedic effect, and shouldn't be taken literally!Hey, I played that game once at a cousin's place. Had no idea what it was called.
Regarding the Touhou fanbase, it's not really uniformly awesome. It's more of an issue of the base being so massive and diverse that anyone can find a part of it that suits their preferences, so they're not forced to stick around if people start disagreeing with them.
^ The TV Tropes Touhou fandom here when they start disagreeing either resort to pulling out new music tracks, pulling fan favorite characters for fun, trying to derail with a new doujin, shenanigans, or at the very very worst, long multi-page strings of puns.
The Sam And Max fandom seems to be pretty friendly.
Weird in a Can (updated M-F)The Mario fanbase used to be pretty tame aside from a few select issues. Unfortunately, that's not the case anymore thanks to recent events over the past few years.
You got some dirt on you. Here's some more!Ok, now you've got me curious as to what Mario's fanbase must argue about. I mean for Christ's sake, it's not like he has a consistent canon or the games are all about a particular style of play, it's all just supposed to be about having fun!
@Tom: wait, we had multi-page pun thread before?
^ Eh, anyone could gripe about some ridiculously minor stuff...

Give me cute or give me...something?I actually think that the Team Fortress 2 fanbase isn't so bad, since they create a lot of fan-made stuff.
"Hipsters: the most dangerous gang in the US." - Pacific MackerelThe Dark Souls fanbase is pretty cool, both in and out of game.
Tropers watching moviesThe only cool fanbases thats comes to mind are the Touhou and Valve/Steam ones
http://steamcommunity.com/id/Xan-Xan/You see this statement right here? Recently there was an interview with Miyamoto on the Mario series, such as the state of canon is in the Mario series. Guess what one of the issues is that they argue about now! All they used to argue about characters and games they disliked.
You got some dirt on you. Here's some more!If there are any cool game fanbases than I have yet to join one.
Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016I wouldn't call the TF 2 fanbase awesome, as they are incredibly hostile against critics.
I would know, I used to be in it once.

Really? The ones I've interacted with are a bit more laid-back.
"Hipsters: the most dangerous gang in the US." - Pacific MackerelHonestly, I dn't know much about cool fanbases, since I'm a fan of two warring ones.
They do have medals for almost, and they're called silver!Sonic, Pokemon, Team Fortress, Porta -shouvl-
I'm with the Touhou Fanbase. I'm not a big fan of the series itself, but by god, the amount of work they put into high quality fan art and fan fiction is downright admirable.
If you wanna PM me, send it to my mrsunshinesprinkles account; this one is blorked.I'm not so sure about the Pokemon fanbase. There are certain sections that are pretty scary. Although come to think of it, those were mostly the fans of the anime.

Oh no, both the anime and game fandoms of Pokemon are downright scary.
Think back to the first Pokemon game you ever played. You must have enjoyed it to some extent, right? I mean, come on; those critters are adorable. Well, there are some people who don't see Pokemon as cute little animals. They see them as numbers and factors, and from the second they catch one they can determine the maximum attack gain if the Pokemon is EV-trained. If it isn't to their liking, they'll release it and find another one they can manipulate. And then there's the breeding; some people will build 2 amazing Pokemon from the tiniest levels up to Lvl 100 without any Rare Candy, just to breed them to make more with high stats at Lvl 1/5. And then there's the Nature of a Pokemon; if an Attack-oriented Aron turns out to have a Gentle nature, it's either off to the box for life or released into the wild. Pokemon are not friends to these people. they are NUMBERS.
And the Anime fanbase is particularly rabid. As this is a VG fanbase thread, I'll keep it quick: The shipping's out of control, the fans whine too much about filler, everyone has their own cut-off point for the series (some refusing to even watch Johto) and there are constant fights about the English V As.
The Pokemon fanbase is one of the most unpleasable, rabid monsters to ever exist.
Not to mention the tons of Nostalgia Filter and They Changed It, Now It Sucks! from the game fanbase.
You've forgotten how rabid the Left for Dead fans became after it was announced that they were going to make a sequel first instead of the expansions for the first game. And they're still pretty bitchy: the slightest balance change or such will make a ton of them start screaming ruined forever at the top of their lungs.
And the Steam users aren't completely immune to it, either. Notice how a lot of them are strongly opposed to Steam hosting F 2 P games, to the point that they'd automatically downvote them on Greenlight no matter the concept?
