...for the record? That "logical reduction" I talked about in determining the rest of the team? More or less resulted in the third "main Ace" of the group being Nena Trinity, with the mothership being the Archangel .

I've been failing to make my "monthly chapter" quota (I blame my upcoming job transition—well, minus the new job part, since my office is closing), but I was able to post something new with a trite name and hot Leo on Virgo action.

I had an idea for that SEED AU proposal of mine. Actually, two ideas.

I always intended to have Nicol survive and as of yesterday, I know what kind of injury he'd suffer: getting both hands and about half of each forearm burned off by a close encounter with a beam saber. How it would be relevant is that at the end of the story, Kira anonymously sends him a pair of custom-built prosthetic hands with nerve-controlled, fully articulate fingers, along with a note that a mutual friend of theirs told him of Nicol's talent with the piano.

The other idea is that Kira doesn't regain consciousness by the time of Waltfeld's first probing attack and the Archangel is in quite the pinch... until Flay radioes in from the Strike's cockpit and requests permission to launch. She initially has serious difficulty until she realizes that those Bu CU Es are manned - at which point she utilizes the knowledge she gained in her psychology classes to press her opponent's overconfidence button until he charges her, at which point he finds out the hard way that the Strike palmed a beam saber earlier because Flay figured that he'll be too distracted by her beam rifle shooting at him to notice the awkward way she was suddenly holding it... So yeah, Flay exercises Badass Bookworm Awesomeness by Analysis to gain the upper hand at something she's a complete amateur at.

Wait. Flay could fly an custom MS, survive being showered beams and railgun shells XCOM style, and shank the idiot when he/she goes for the kill?

That's.... a bit unbelievable, sorry. Not even Lacus could do that. Or Relena, for that matter.

If it's amita, I think he can find a way to pull it off.

That said, [up] does have a point.

Prior to this, she almost drained her beam rifle without ever hitting anyone. She is piloting a mobile suit for the first time, after all. And Bu CU Es don't have beam weapons aside from the mouth saber (I looked up the specs to confirm), so they can't actually hurt the Strike while phaseshift is in play. If it wasn't, she would be dead very quickly and it would be acknowledged. So Flay is basically a noob using a godmode cheat in this battle.

I always intended for Flay to eventually get her hands on a 105 Dagger, but it felt jarring to have her suddenly ask Kira out of the blue to set up a combat simulator in the Strike and for her to get a MS despite being a civilian. This way, the intention is that the 105 Dagger was loaded to the Archangel in pieces during their resupply before reentry and was intended for Mu, but the engineering crew hasn't finished assembling it yet before the Bu CU Es show up. Since Mu explicitly mentioned in canon that he has no idea how to operate a mobile suit when he was asked whether he could take over as the Strike's pilot, that would hold true here as well: after Flay's stunt with the Strike, Mu would say that he's much more at home behind the controls of a Skygrasper anyway, so Murrue and co. should let Flay use the 105 Dagger if she wants to fight so badly since they need every advantage they can get.

It's also a notable point that at this point in the war, most ZAFT pilots have zero experience in anti-MS combat. They are used to killing tanks and Mobiuses, not other MS - and by the time the action would move back into space, Flay has fought enough DINNs and Daggers on Earth that she actually has more anti-MS combat experience than the average GINN pilot.

That beam-saber-hidden-in-the-hand trick was something Flay improvised on the spot after remembering a time she watched Sai cheat at cards.

In case your memory isn't very fresh about this, Sai is portrayed here as a charmeur con artist-type guy who gets his kicks out of hustling people via bets he always ends up winning. How does he do that, you ask? He's a latent Newtype and has literally supernatural intuition, allowing him to know the outcome beforehand and make his bet accordingly, thus trolling his victims with impunity. An example shows up right in the first chapter: when the group was going to pick up Kira, Sai made a bet with Tolle that Miri will find Kira in his underwear after he stayed up all night. Surprise surprise, that's exactly what happened.

Tolle König immediately groaned. – “Aw, damn.”

“Sorry, mate. Pay up.” – the hustler extraordinaire known as Sai Argyle quipped, holding out a hand expectantly.

Miri promptly lost her cool. – “Tolle...” – she growled in a tone that made the boy cringe. – “How many times have I told you NOT to make bets with Sai?!”

Sai held up his hands. – “Sorry. It was too delicious an opportunity to pass.”

By "in his underwear", I really meant the same level of undress Frau finds Amuro in at the start of MSG.

And instead of fiddling with radio amateur kits like Amuro, Kira was studying schematics of civilian Mini-Mecha. Said first chapter also mentions a Noodle Incident in the recent past where Kira crashed one such Mini-Mecha belonging to his school (a valve in the propulsion system didn't shut properly) and is currently fixing it up (that is, applying a software bypass) instead of that canon scene of his friends messing around with some kind of Powered Armor that never appears again.

Okay, I'm maybe nitpicking too much but what the heck. I'll just post my observation on original SEED, and if I made mistake or it's not in your story, feel free to gave correction.

  • In original series, in the desert fight, Kira actually got into trouble against BuCueS because Strike isn't properly tuned up for desert fight, with slippery sands making stability and aiming whole lot difficult, while BuCueS are properly designed and tuned up for combat desert.
  • Flay, as I observe, didn't really have mindset/ personality that capable to soldiering. Her personality as a whole was closer to spy/ covert operative mindset, with subtle/ overt mind/ emotion manipulation, and rarely goes physical except to maybe assert dominance against weaker target. I can't imagine she goes gun-blazing on ZAFT operatives, except if she goes Ax-Crazy because long rounds of Break the Haughty and Cutie. Not like that.
  • PS Armor, as strong as it is, ultimately also limited; MS in SEED doesn't really have particularly long operation time, counted in hours before resupply. PS Armor eats battery store likes crazy, this is why Alliance pursue Trans-PS armor (to limit battery drain) and why nuclear-powered MS is such a big deal (practically limitless PS Armor). Waltfeld is aware of this weakness, and it's safe to assume his soldiers are.
  • As rule of thumb, in any sane scenario, when you fielded a rookie, you don't put him as lone champion of justice. You fielded rookies as team, hopefully with a trusted commander that can lead them through pressure. This means, if you fielded Flay, then you'd better has backups, even if it's only Archangel fire support or Skygrasper potshotting distracted enemies.

No plot, pure Writing by the Seat of Your Pants.

It is the year 0079 of the New Mid-Childa Calendar. Almost half a decade has passed since the Scaglietti Numbers attempted to overthrow the TSAB and throw the known universe into chaos. A girl named Vivio, the centerpiece of the Numbers' plot, has been given a new home under the Ace of Aces, Nanoha Takamachi.

Nine minutes ago, the Takamachi-Testarossa family and their friends began a heated sparring match divided by gender.

Initial fighting lasted for over one minute, and saw both teams lose over half their membership.

Onlookers are excited by the carnage wrought in the name of achieving a brief moment's victory.

Eight minutes have passed since the battle began. They are at... a stalemate.

On the women's side, Nanoha, Fate, Hayate, and Vivio were the last to stay on their feet.

On the men's side, Chrono and Zafira were the last ones standing.

And then suddenly, a timer went ding, causing Chrono to smirk. "Looks like we get our reinforcements now."

No sooner had he finished speaking, then everyone heard the roar of thrusters. Scant seconds later, a white humanoid behemoth appeared, and touched down on the battlefield.

Brandishing a beam saber in one hand, and a shield with a stylized unicorn in the other, the humongous mecha certainly cut an intimidating figure.

"Okay girls," Hayate quickly said. "Remember the plan! No matter what happens, nobody say it! The second somebody says it, we're boned!"

"Not that Nanoha would consider that a bad thing," Chrono quipped, prompting a blush both from Nanoha and from Fate.

"Really, big brother?! You went there in front of my daughter?! ...even if you're not wrong?!"

At that time, the pilot of the giant mecha broadcast a question over the external speakers, audibly smirking. "Okay ladies, time for a little pop quiz! What kind of Mobile Suit is this?!"

Vivio immediately raised her hand, and started jumping about in excitement. "Ooh, ooh, I know! I know what it is! Pick me, papa!"

Nanoha and Hayate had matching expressions of terror. "No! Don't answer it!"

"IT'S A GUNDAM!" Vivio cheered. Then, as the Nu Gundam loosed its Fin Funnels and began powering up, she suddenly realized what she just did. "...oops..."

Amuro laughed. "Attagirl, Vivio!"

Nanoha promptly attempted to regain control over the situation. "It's okay! Just because it's a meme that anyone who says those three words immediately gets curb stomped doesn't mean it'll actually happen! Sure, he's Amuro Ray, veteran ace pilot of three wars, the guy who won a sumo wrestling contest with a giant asteroid, and a ridiculously powerful Newtype with psychic reflexes that give him an incredible edge over any opponent... but we're Aces, too! We can totally - agh!"

Alas, they could not, because Amuro one-shotted all three of them with particle beams from his Funnels while Nanoha was attempting her rousing speech. Even with the Nu Gundam's Minovsky reactor and related technology swapped out with magical substitutes giving it the same kind of nonlethal capability that TSAB agents enjoyed with their Devices... particle beams'll still knock you out, dude.

Chrono fist-bumped a Gundam, everybody picked themselves up and went out for a nice dinner, and then the White Devils spent the night banging while Vivio stayed over at a friend's house.

The end.

P.S.: Don't worry — Fate also got her turn with Nanoha, too.

Okay I just finished Steel 7 and Ghost up to Ch.9 on mangafox. Tobia Aronax is one of the craziest badasses in the Gundam franchise outside of G Gundam. I mean, how many people can keep being an ace pilot after being blinded?

The murasame blaster is a pretty unique sword and rifle combo that's very different from Exia's.

I am kind of curious about why the X-0 is the only unit with those beam pistol/saber things instead of a beam cutlass and flintlock.

While thinking about that SEED AU fic idea of mine, I had an alternate backstory idea for Rau. It pretty much inverts everything from canon.

While he looks to be in his twenties or thirties, Rau is actually well over a century old. He was born with a freak one-in-a-trillion genetic mutation that renders him biologically immortal (doesn't age but can still die from external causes) - and when he was a young child, he's been 'acquired' (read: kidnapped) by a biomedical research corporation who were hellbent on unlocking the secret of immortality, even if it means they have to cut him apart. Rau was kept imprisoned in the lab until his teenage years, when there was a major lab accident that gave him the chance to escape. The corporation subsequently went bankrupt and its assets were scooped up by a group who later designed the Coordinator process from the recovered research material.

Rau subsequently went into hiding and lived his life in obscurity until he was sought out by Al da Flaga, who also wanted the immortality gene for himself. Under this new research, the gene sequence was successfully identified and Mu was cloned from Al as the testbed for splicing the gene sequence into a human; Ulen Hibiki also participated in the project and in fact this is what inspired his own Ultimate Coordinator research. When Al then tried to use gene therapy to splice the sequence into his own DNA, however, things went horribly wrong and Al died in agony from over a dozen cancers simultaneously developing in his body.

Mu doesn't know about any of this and aside from that one gene sequence, his DNA wasn't modified in any way because the point of this research was to see if it was possible to splice the sequence into an unaugmented human (presuming that Al was a Natural, which I think he was).

Rau's attitude towards his own immortality is Who Wants to Live Forever? and You Are Not Ready: every attempt by others to acquire his secret went wrong, so he's convinced that it's best if he takes that secret to the grave. He's fighting with ZAFT because as a fellow individual hounded by others for being different, he feels a sort of kinship with Coordinators. He may have been crazy like in canon before, but if he was, it was more like a "phase" he outgrew through enough life experience to temper Nietzsche Wannabe pessimism into Seen It All realism.

[up]Nice.

For my mega crossover with every series except Build Fighters, G and Wing, and the shows that will not be named, I attempted to give the SEED Gundams (The first five that we see except for Aegis other then the whole Minovsky Reactor replacing the batteries that these MS have in canon and the near CCA-era cockpits but that's standard to all the G Weapons now.) upgrades as I was having the SEED plot start literally in the middle of ZZ and I felt the technological gap between the canon G Weapons and just the mook suits (GM III and Zaku III) was too big.

You gotta start somewhere.

Erm... what are the shows that will not be named, as you use the phrase? Depending on who I talk to, that could refer to ZZ, Victory, Destiny (or even SEED in general), AGE, or even something else.

[up][up]Been thinking of souping up the SEED Gundams myself, but haven't thought that much about it. Other than all five having a rudimentary AI (more like a VI) that keeps the pilot informed about certain things, kinda like a futuristic version of the "Bitchin' Betty" systems used in modern aircraft (you know, the one that yells at the pilot to pull up when he's diving toward the ground at low altitude). This AI system takes the place of canon's Natural-use OS in the story - that is, Natural pilots can handle a mobile suit despite their lower abilities because the AI takes enough of a load off of them by automating most things, just like the fly-by-wire control systems of fighter aircraft. Conversely, experienced Coordinator MS pilots in an AI-assisted MS often feel that their hands are tied back due to not having full control (since the AI is part of the suit's operating system and thus cannot be turned off or bypassed).

Tone-wise, the first five OMNI Gundams, the ZAFT Gundams (since they stole theirs from the First Five) and Orb mobile suits (since they use the same OS as the First Five) all have a female-voiced AI; the later OMNI Gundams have a male-voiced AI, with the Destroy in particular having a Sovereign-esque voice.

As for the First Five themselves, I'm going with the idea that ZAFT intelligence only knew about four of them and the heist was launched while the Duel-Buster-Blitz-Aegis quartet was being moved on a convoy to the spaceport. It was only when Dearka boarded the Buster and found a reference to the Strike in the OS' dev notes that the jig was up; the Strike itself was still at the factory because, since it had more equipment than the others, it didn't finish getting boxed up when ZAFT showed up.

I'm also thinking that, when Dearka pulls his Heel–Face Turn, the Morgenröte engineers jury-rig the Buster with some Strike parts (since both use the X100 series frame, which suggests at least basic parts compatibility) to make it compatible with Striker packs.
