Real Life section maintenance (New Crowner 19 Feb 2024)

Go To

Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the mods to add the trope via this thread.

This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.

Common problems include:

Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.

If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.

If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.

Before adding to the crowner:

  • The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
  • There must be support from others in thread.
  • Any objections should be addressed.
  • Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.

When adding to the crowner:

  • Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
  • Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
  • An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).

In order for a crowner to pass:

  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • There must be a 2:1 ratio
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
  • Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP index
  • Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page

Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need crowner vote.

Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.

After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

NRLEP tag:

LRLEO tag:

%%The following restrictions apply: [list restriction(s) here]

Notes:
  • This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread.
  • Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
  • As mentioned here, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
  • The [[noreallife]] tag doesn't currently work. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. However, there's been some staff conversation (Feb 2024) about what a new technical solution might look like, so we'd advise against deleting these from pages, at least until we have a decision as to whether it'll be fixed or replaced.

[up]x4 I agree that both examples at Quotes.Single Species Nations are misuse, and that the trope should be formally NRLEP.

I suspect from the Real Life subpage that Metaphorically True is not only prone to ROCEJ violations and natter, but is also too common:

  • A large number of proposition bets used by grifters can be solved by looking very carefully at the wording. For example, "I bet you that I can take a brand new deck of cards, make the ace jump out of the pack and fly across the room, then write your name on your forehead." If you hear this said aloud, most people assume that the ace will do all of the actions listed. Looking more carefully at the syntax of the sentence reveals that the actions can be done by the person making the bet rather than by the ace. (Incidentally, the usual way to win the bet is to flick the ace up from the bottom of the pack — where it usually is in most new, unshuffled decks — catch it, throw it across the room, and then take a pen to write the person's name on their forehead.)
There is also some misuse on the page:
  • An old, possibly apocryphal story about underage soldiers in The American Civil War says that when they went to join up, many of them would write "18" on a piece of paper and stick it in their shoe. When the recruiter asked how old they were, they could join without having lied, as they were "over 18." The same story is told in most of Europe in regards to soldiers signing up in WWI and WWII.

[up][up]I recall some listings I added to KRLE (I think last year) being former NRLEP tropes that had their NRLEP status removed via downvotes in a crowner in this thread. I don't remember what the specific tropes were and I don't currently feel like digging though either the page history or previous pages of this thread, though.

Getting the Baby to Sleep has no real life examples in the description, but I don't see it on the index for that. Is it supposed to be no real life examples?

A glance through the page history shows that it was listed as NRLEP at launch. Because it's acceptable to make a trope NRLEP in TLP, it looks like the sponsor just forgot to add it to the proper NRLEP index.

I could go ahead and add it to the index then. What should be the reason listed though? "Too common"?

Is Acrofatic too common? A lot of the examples are just "plus sized people who aren't clumsy", which seems meaningless in real life.

Psycho Electro has real life examples, amusingly enough. Dosen't this trope require superpowers? I don't think stuff like tasers and electric metal balls count.

    Real Life
  • Truth in Television: Several members of the law enforcement community. Witness the staggering number of excessive force incidents involving tasers.
    • "Don't tase me, bro!"
    • This is a result of the widespread belief that a taser is a harmless device that does no real damage. As it turns out, while less lethal than a firearm, it's still a dangerous weapon to be only used at utmost need.
  • Possibly originated with Nikola Tesla, famous for his studies of electricity and for pioneering mad science as we know it today.
    • Take a look at this picture and you might want to reconsider that "possibly" part.

[up][up][up]At the very least, you can cut the entire real life section as misuse. I agree that it does require some sort of lightning powers (and I know this is a controversial statement, but I don't think Tesla had lightning powers).

I propose restricting the Real Life subpage of Punny Name to pseudonyms and business names and the like, because naming in the real world doesn't work like in fiction and many current examples in the Individuals section seem to be pure coincidence.

[up]Accidental Puns don't count for tropes about intentional puns (like that one) anyway, so we could just remove the coincidences even if we don't make it LRLEO.

Um, you can't just blank an entire section unless it's all objectively misuse. "Too controversial" is a meaningless term here since people throw it around for anything. These things need discussion.

i was gonna, but it was kind of late at night when i did it. regardless, most of the examples were misuse and some were also related to a certain conflict that i don't wish to name. also, it was troping a event that had happened less than a year ago.

Well, we should at least paste it here for everyone to judge.

    Real Life
  • The group of military officers and KGB leaders who tried to depose Gorbachev in 1991.
  • The second-latest addition to Russia's terror blacklist (February 2015) is a "People's militia named after Minin and Pozharskiy". Naming itself after the founders of an actual mass rebellion against foreign intervention in the early 1610s, it intended to combat the "Western invasion" and "corrupt and traitorous elites", including Vladimir Putin himself, apparently. Based on the court charges filed against individual members in 2011-2012, a group spearheaded by GRU and paratroop veterans planned to stage an armed insurrection in Yekaterinburg and Kovrov, sabotaging most of the civic infrastructure with the small strike groups they'd formed, while also gunning down any rabbi they could get in range of.
  • Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the infamous Wagner Private Military Company briefly became this when he lanched an abortive coup attempt against the Russian Ministry of Defence in June 2023. Prior to then, Prigozhin was known for having furthered the Kremlin's interests across Africa, in Syria and in eastern Ukraine. When the Russo-Ukrainian war broke out, Prigozhin's forces were at the forefront and became the only pro-Russian forces in the country operating with any semblance of effectiveness after the rest of the Russian military got bogged down. This led Prigozhin to brand nearly the entire Russian military brass as General Failures, launching a months-long, drawn-out and very public spat with them. Accusing Defence Minister Shoigu and Chief of Staff Gerasimov of driving Russia to a total military defeat in Ukraine (and suggesting that this, in turn, would lead to wholesale collapse of Russia), Prigozhin mobilised his forces to Moscow in a bid to remove them. However, his forces stood down shortly afterwards, and Prigozhin himself was killed in a suspected assassination two months later. Obituaries posted after his death highlight the difficulty Russians had in canonising him, praising his "patriotic" actions while contending with the fact that he brought Russia closer to a civil war than any other figure in recent history.

So, not that long. The first is a ZCE. The second... This feels like "correct" use to me, morality concerns and the like aside. The third could probably go, though, because we try to avoid troping the Ukraine stuff.

So I'm not really seeing "misuse" here.

i don't think it even needs a real life section because it's kind of a morality trope. and it appears to be listed as one as well.

Crown Description:

Vote up to either forbid all real life examples (No Real Life Examples Please) or forbid real life examples for specific subjects (Limited Real Life Examples Only); vote down to Keep Real Life Examples. To add a trope to a No Real Life Examples Please index or the Limited Real Life Examples Only index, its crowner option must meet the following criteria:
  • Stable 2:1 ratio needed for NRLEP or LRLEO
  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple of extra days to see if more votes come in.

After you bring up a trope for discussion, please try to wait at least a day or so for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

If an item has a (CLOSED) note, there is no need to vote on it: the result has already been decided and it's no longer up for discussion.
