The name implies it's about heinous things, but the trope is basically a list ending in something that doesn't really fit.

Plus the trope is supposed to be three things, but I've seen wicks using other numbers (that are still heinous).

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.

Currently the trope description says "three or more things", so lists of more than three aren't misuse.

This is an Example Named Trope.

Having a name that's more narrow than the definition doesn't create misuse per se, but it could be limiting the usage of it, or making that Pot Hole look more like a Sink Hole.

Somebody up for a Wick Check? Not for "misuse", but rather how many of the links are actually using it for its definition (general purpose list with out-of-place finisher), and how many are using it for, shall we say, a "List of Transgressions" with odd finisher.

We have 3,200 links. Happy trails.

Can I tackle the complete Z range?

Actually is heinous

  • Zippy Ziggy: "They make several prank calls to Jang Hyun, puncture his chauffeur's tires, successfully frame him as a subway molester and subsequently get him beaten up for such an act in order to break his spirit."
  • Main.Zoofights: "...you corrupted history ...you corrupted life. But that wasn't enough, was it? You had to go and corrupt the Beeb!"

You be the judge

On second thought, we do have one form of positive misuse: Lists of criminal/heinous offenses without an odd item to cherry-on-top it.

[up] Based on that sample (and, informally, how I've seen it used around the wiki), I am not inclined to be worried about the name of this trope.

I don't think a TRS action is needed here—it could use a better Laconic (the current one is wrong) and a better image (the current one is lame), but I don't see a rename being on the table.

[up]That's too small a sample to make that judgement (remember the 50-Square Root rule).

There is nothing wrong with the name of this trope. Or anything about the trope, especially. Is this really what people are putting through TRS when slots open up? I know all kinds of things that have way more business being here than this.

So rather than wait for a proper wick check, you make a blanket statement of nothing wrong, without even trying to back it up.

You can't claim this is a waste of forum space if you aren't going to prove there is no merit here.

I just haven't personally seen much misuse, and I've seen all kinds of other things that have serious freaking problems, so I'm wondering why we're nitpicking about this until after we've taken care of some of those things.

We HAVE taken care of some things. That's why there was room to make this thread. And personally not seeing misuse is not evidence of nothing wrong.

Personal experience isn't definitive, but it is indicative, when it comes to a situation. I'm sure there's a few bad examples, everything has some, do the wick check if you want. If it comes back with minimal misuse though, I'm going to say I Told You So.

What makes you think TRS is for bragging rights? You're showing an attitude that is more Flame Bait than trying to give actual input into this discussion.

I don't know what you're talking about with bragging rights. And my input is that there's nothing especially wrong here, not with the name, anyway. We'll see though, I suppose.

Well, in fairness, this really ought to go both ways. I notice you didn't have a wick check ready when you started this thread. If you'd come prepared with evidence from the beginning, your case would be a lot more persuasive. *shrug*

As it stands, I'm not convinced that there's a problem here at all.

[up][up]"I told you so" about trope repair is trying to brag, as though this is about who gets to win, rather than what is best for people looking at this site.

[up]The backlog situation makes long OP posts not a good idea anymore, as the shop could be at capacity again by the time a post is ready. I'll be doing a proper wick check soon.

Well if you're in such a hurry to post it that you didn't even skim the wicks or the example section beforehand, that's not very thoughtful of you. sad

You should write up the post in advance and paste it in. That's much more efficient.

Well, I think that "list of three or more things" is not a trope, whereas "list of two nasty things and something that's really pretty innocent" is a trope. So I'd say that this page is supposed to be the latter, and any examples that are not particularly heinous but just an enumeration should be cut.

Rhetorical, eh? ... Eight!
