So the winner for this session, pulling ahead of the tie by virtue of having a smaller work page, is House Of Five Leaves!

A Jidaigeki, or Japanese period samurai anime, it is twelve episodes long, so you guys have an extra day to complete it.

Original Nomination:

4. House Of Five Leaves (Nominated by Thenamelesssamurai)

  • Genre: Jidaigeki (Period Drama)/ Samurai/ Action
  • Description: A skilled, but timid ronin named Akitsu Masanosuke is hired to be a bodyguard of a man named Yaichi, who is the leader of a group who kidnaps heirs of wealthy businessmen and hold them for ransom.
  • Why recommended: A distinctive art style, with an intricate plot and great characters. Also, the anime is 12 episodes long so we'll complete the whole thing in one session.

Wiki Summery: Rōnin Akitsu Masanosuke is a skilled swordsman, but his personality often causes him to be let go from his job. One day he encounters Yaichi, the leader of a group calling itself "Five Leaves" and takes a job from him as a bodyguard. Though he is worried about the intentions of the group, he feels there is something more to the group and agrees to work with them.

Suggested Quota breaks:

  • 1 episode a day (~25 minutes a day)
  • Weekend Binge (2 Fri-Sat-Sun binges, 2 episodes a day, ~1 hour a day)

Links:

  • On AnimeHere
  • On Anime Atom
  • On Funimation's site
  • Feel free to contribute more places to watch! Also, i didn't find a place to watch the dub so if anyone finds one, it would be nice to provide a link for that for those dub fans.

So go out, watch, contribute! Be sure to have the work page up on another tab, if you can. Keep your eye out for tropes and things to bring to discussion!

(Also, Nominations for next session are open! You can drop a nomination in the thread, pm me, or add it to the club page: The Anime And Manga Troping Club)

House Of Five Leaves is also available on YouTube and Hulu. Also, I don't think it has a dub, though it is officially licensed by Funimation.

(One niggle - it's "summary",not "summery". Spellcheck hath no brain.)

Interesting usage of "nakama" already. I imagine it's something like, "Don't you want to join my friends?" Very Goodfellas.

Yup, and Masa just gets dragged right into it. tongue I like seeing an example True Companions amongst Anti-Heroes though.

House of Five Leaves: Episode 1 In Name Only Thoughts: Kind of extremely shocking that Five Leaves turned out to be a kidnapping group.

That was an interesting twist, wasn't it? As I said, it's cool seeing the heroes as grey. Particularly seeing how Yaichi even denies specifically targeting those who deserve it. Adds a nice morality shade to the protagonists.

I watched the first three episodes, I'm liking it so far. I'm kind of confused, though. Are these flashbacks of the other kid that was kidnapped about Matsu?

Also, started a character page for it.

Did a binge and finished of the series, so good! That last scene is so cute! Talk about Ho Yay, I love it. Ah, and who that kid was is so obvious now, duh, I should have guessed. I was slightly disappointed we never did get to see Masa in a full on fight. Ah, I wish there was a season 2...

About the Ho Yay, have a gem from Volume Four:

Masa: In light of the killings, it cannot be helped... If things continue this vein many families will start hiring yojimbo.

Yaichi: *looks at Masa*

Masa: *also turns to face Yaichi* I will protect you, Yaichi-dono.

Yaichi: *looks mildly surprised* ...How chivalrous.

Masa: It's my job.

Yaichi: *smiles a somewhat knowing smile*

Am I missing something or is this an epic case of Bodyguard Crush?

Ohh, and later he talks to that Ginta guy, and calls him annoying, just like Masa, but added that Masa's got a charm to him, at least.

Not to mention Ginta living with Masa. Anyone got volume 5 aready? I would post that in the Ho Yay entry, but I'm afraid it's too much.
